ChipStart UK is an early-stage semiconductor incubator backed by the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and delivered by SiliconCatalyst.UK. DSIT announced a £1.3 million, two-year pilot in October 2023. The programme has since changed its cohort format: later cohorts moved from nine months to 12 months, and SiliconCatalyst.UK reported that its fourth cohort launched in March 2026.
What is ChipStart UK?
ChipStart UK supports companies developing semiconductor technology at the earliest stages, when access to design infrastructure, specialist advice and investment networks can be difficult to secure. The original pilot focused on semiconductor-design businesses, including ventures working on health-related chips, artificial intelligence and data-centre energy efficiency.
Announcing the pilot, then technology minister Paul Scully said: “Semiconductors are the bedrock of our modern economy and an increasingly integral part of our lives.”
Who runs the incubator?
DSIT provided the government backing, while SiliconCatalyst.UK delivered the programme. SiliconCatalyst.UK is responsible for cohort operations, mentoring and connections to its wider semiconductor network. The government announcement said participating companies could access more than 270 Silicon Catalyst advisers and strategic partners.

- Thread, Matter, Zigbee, ANT, and NFC at 2.4GHz frequency
- PROCESSOR: Features the advanced nRF54L15 transceiver chip from Nordic Semiconductor for reliable wireless communications
- WIRELESS STANDARDS: Implements IEEE 802.15.4 protocol support for Matter, Thread, and Zigbee networking applications
- DEVELOPMENT PLATFORM: Comprehensive evaluation board designed for testing and prototyping wireless connectivity solutions
What support does ChipStart UK provide?
The launch announcement described a package intended to help founders move from technical concept toward a fundable, manufacturable business.
- Chip-design capability: practical support for developing semiconductor designs.
- Design tools and intellectual property: access to tools and IP that early-stage companies may not be able to afford independently.
- Prototyping: help turning designs into working prototypes.
- Commercial expertise: guidance on markets, business models and company building.
- Specialist mentorship: advice from experienced semiconductor professionals.
- Investor connections: introductions intended to support later fundraising.
The programme is an incubator, not a promise of investment. Access to advisers, tools or investor introductions does not guarantee that a company will raise capital or reach production.

How the cohorts have changed
Programme rules and cohort details have not been static. The following timeline separates the original pilot announcement from later, dated updates.
| Period | Reported details | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| October 2023 | Two-year pilot announced with £1.3 million in government backing; SiliconCatalyst.UK named as delivery partner. | DSIT launch announcement. |
| First cohort, 2023 | 12 companies selected from 27 applications after two rounds of panel interviews. | DSIT announcement; this is the first-cohort selection record. |
| Second cohort, announced 22 February 2024 | Nine-month cohort scheduled to start on 1 June 2024. Applications were due by midnight on 19 April 2024, and applicants needed less than £1 million in private funding. | SiliconCatalyst.UK announcement; the deadline and funding threshold were historical conditions for that application round. |
| Cohort three, announced 27 March 2025 | Programme length changed to 12 months. SiliconCatalyst.UK reported more than £45 million in private VC and angel funding raised by the first two cohorts. | Operator-reported figures and programme change. |
| 2024–25 reporting | DSIT’s annual report described first-two-cohort private investment as over £40 million; it listed 11 companies in cohort two and 10 in cohort three. | Separate government wording; it should not be treated as identical to SiliconCatalyst.UK’s higher figure. |
| Fourth cohort, launched 19 March 2026 | 11 companies selected from 42 applications for a fully funded 12-month programme. | SiliconCatalyst.UK operator report. |
How many companies have taken part?
The first cohort contained 12 companies. DSIT later reported 11 companies in cohort two and 10 in cohort three. SiliconCatalyst.UK reported 11 companies selected for cohort four from 42 applications. These counts describe individual dated cohorts; they should not be read as a single fixed annual intake or as proof that every application round used the same criteria.

What fundraising results have been reported?
SiliconCatalyst.UK said in March 2025 that the first two cohorts had collectively raised more than £45 million in private venture-capital and angel funding. DSIT’s 2024–25 annual report described private investment raised by those cohorts as over £40 million. Because the figures come from different sources and use different wording, neither should be silently substituted for the other.
In its March 2026 news update, SiliconCatalyst.UK said alumni from cohorts one through three had raised close to $100 million in equity funding. This is an operator-reported outcome across a broader group and currency basis than the earlier first-two-cohort figures. Fundraising totals show what participating companies raised; they do not establish that ChipStart UK alone caused those investments.

- Integrated Antenna: Features PCB trace antenna built directly on-board for immediate testing and development without requiring external antenna components
Who might have been eligible?
The programme targeted early-stage semiconductor-design companies, but eligibility has varied by application round. For example, the second-cohort announcement required applicants to have less than £1 million in private funding. That threshold was attached to the 2024 call and is not evidence of a permanent rule. Prospective applicants should use the current SiliconCatalyst.UK programme and application information rather than relying on an old cohort announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the programme matters to founders
Semiconductor startups face unusually high upfront costs: specialist design software, third-party IP, prototype fabrication and experienced engineering talent can all be difficult to obtain before institutional funding. A publicly backed incubator can reduce some of those early barriers and give founders access to people who understand chip development and commercialisation.

That support does not remove the central risks. A company still has to demonstrate a viable design, secure manufacturing capacity, find customers and raise sufficient capital for later development. The programme’s reported funding figures are therefore useful indicators of alumni activity, not a guaranteed return for participants or taxpayers.
What is current as of March 2026?
The latest operator update identified by SiliconCatalyst.UK says cohort four launched on 19 March 2026 with 11 companies chosen from 42 applications and a fully funded 12-month programme. It also reported close to $100 million in equity funding among alumni from the first three cohorts. These are SiliconCatalyst.UK’s current reported figures; programme availability, application dates and eligibility can change between cohorts.
