ZeroRISC Raises $10 Million to Commercialize OpenTitan-Based Silicon Security

ZeroRISC’s June 2025 $10 million seed round supports commercial OpenTitan-based silicon security, but the financing does not prove that open-source silicon adoption is inevitable.

ZeroRISC announced a $10 million seed round on June 11, 2025, led by Fontinalis Partners. The company says it will use the financing to support commercial adoption of security products built around OpenTitan, an open-source hardware root-of-trust project. The round follows a separate $5 million seed financing announced at ZeroRISC’s October 2023 launch; the two announcements should not be treated as a confirmed $15 million lifetime total.

What ZeroRISC is building

ZeroRISC is a semiconductor-security company founded around OpenTitan, an open-source silicon root-of-trust design and ecosystem. A root of trust provides hardware foundations for functions such as secure boot and verifying system integrity before an operating system loads.

The company describes a broader offering than a standalone security chip. Its plan combines OpenTitan-based silicon, software, integration into systems-on-chip (SoCs), chiplets and devices, and an Integrity Management Platform for device ownership, policy and security management. ZeroRISC’s launch materials identified data centers, industrial control and operational-technology systems, IoT products and edge devices as intended markets.

Those descriptions establish the company’s proposed product scope, not independent proof of performance, customer deployments or revenue.

What the $10 million round means

The financing gives ZeroRISC capital to turn an open hardware design into commercial products and supporting services. In practical terms, that can fund engineering, silicon integration, software development, security validation, business development and customer support. The June 11, 2025 announcement named Fontinalis Partners as lead investor and listed Fundomo, Analog Devices co-founder Ray Stata, SemiAnalysis founder Dylan Patel, SBXi, Chelpis, Bond Street LLC and existing angel investors as additional participants.

A financing announcement is evidence that investors backed the company’s plan at that time. It is not evidence by itself of sales volume, market share, profitability or broad customer adoption. The available announcements do not establish ZeroRISC’s current pricing, order volume, customer count or present-day availability.

ZeroRISC’s funding timeline

The February 2024 OpenTitan coalition announcement named nine organizations: Google, Winbond, Nuvoton, ZeroRISC, Rivos, Western Digital, Seagate, ETH Zurich and Giesecke+Devrient. That is a count of participants named in that announcement, not a measure of the market’s size.

How OpenTitan changes the commercialization question

OpenTitan is intended to make a silicon root of trust open for inspection, collaboration and reuse rather than tying every implementation to a proprietary design. That can potentially reduce duplicated development and give chipmakers a common security foundation. It does not remove the difficult work of manufacturing, integration, validation, secure provisioning, lifecycle management and customer certification.

ZeroRISC’s model therefore sits between an open project and a conventional semiconductor product. The company aims to package the design into discrete or integrated silicon, connect it to customers’ SoCs or chiplets, and manage devices through software and cloud services. Whether that model succeeds depends on technical qualification and repeatable customer deployments, neither of which is quantified in the financing announcement.

Is open-source silicon security becoming “inevitable”?

“Inevitable” is ZeroRISC founder and CEO Dominic Rizzo’s characterization, not an independently verified forecast. In the June 2025 announcement, Rizzo said: “Once considered a niche idea, open-source silicon is becoming an inevitability with the adoption of implementations like OpenTitan by Google.”

The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: OpenTitan had reached a commercial-availability milestone with validated chips by February 2024, and ZeroRISC and partners had described a related chip as available through early access. Those are meaningful signs of commercialization, but they do not prove that open-source silicon will become the dominant approach or that adoption is guaranteed.

Fontinalis partner Gabe Cunningham offered a related investment rationale, saying that commercial open silicon “can enable a new generation of secure-by-default devices.” That is an investor’s thesis rather than a measured market result.

What investors and technology buyers should watch next

  • Verified deployments: Named production customers and devices would provide stronger evidence than funding announcements.
  • Availability: The February 2024 early-access wording is historical; current ordering terms need confirmation directly from the companies.
  • Integration results: SoC and chiplet implementations will show whether OpenTitan can be adopted without unacceptable design, performance or manufacturing costs.
  • Security lifecycle services: ZeroRISC’s management platform proposition will matter if customers need provisioning, ownership transfer, policy enforcement and updates at fleet scale.
  • Financial durability: Additional financings, recurring software revenue and disclosed commercial contracts would help distinguish a promising project from a durable business.

What this does—and does not—mean for personal investors

ZeroRISC is a private company, so the announced seed round does not provide a direct public-stock investment opportunity. The financing signals that specialist investors see commercial potential in open silicon and hardware security, but it does not establish a valuation, return expectation or investable security for individuals.

For public-market investors, the more relevant exposure may be among listed semiconductor, industrial, cloud and device companies that adopt hardware roots of trust. However, the announcements supplied here do not identify a quantified revenue contribution or a confirmed customer-sales pipeline for any such company.

The Bottom Line

ZeroRISC’s $10 million seed round is a financing and commercialization signal, not proof that open-source silicon security is inevitable. OpenTitan had reached validated-chip and early-access milestones by February 2024, while ZeroRISC is pursuing a larger business combining silicon, integration and device-security management. The next decisive evidence will be verified deployments, current availability and recurring commercial revenue.
