Google Cloud Storage Nearline: What “$0.01 per GiB” Really Costs for Backup

Nearline’s $0.01 per GiB-month rate is only the storage component. Understand restore fees, 30-day minimums, availability, protection features and when Coldline or Archive may fit better.

Yes—but only as a starting storage rate. Google Cloud lists Nearline storage starting at $0.01 per GiB per month (a GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes). That figure covers the stored capacity component, not a complete backup service or restore bill. Operations, retrieval, replication, early-deletion, and network-transfer charges can change the total.

What the $0.01 Nearline price includes

Google’s Cloud Storage overview labels Nearline storage “Starting at $0.01 per GiB per month.” The word “starting” matters: rates vary by bucket location and usage, and the figure is not a guaranteed all-in price for a backup workload.

Nearline is an online object-storage class. Google says it is ideal for data you plan to read or modify on average once per month or less, and lists backup as a suitable use. It is online rather than offline tape: you can access objects when needed, subject to the applicable retrieval, operation, and network charges.

Why a restore costs more than the storage line

Google’s Storage pricing page separates several billing components. A restore can involve more than the bytes sitting in the bucket:

  • Retrieval: Nearline retrieval fees apply when reading, copying, moving, or rewriting Nearline data or metadata.
  • Operations: Requests such as uploads, listings, reads, rewrites, and deletes are billed according to operation class and location. Google publishes separate tables for regional and dual-/multi-regional buckets.
  • Network transfer: Moving recovered data out of Google Cloud can incur egress charges. The service overview shows a general starting figure of $0.08 per GiB, but the actual amount depends on the destination and applicable pricing.
  • Replication: Dual- and multi-region configurations can add inter-region replication charges.
  • Optional services: Autoclass and Storage Intelligence can add charges when enabled.

Retrieval and network charges are based on the amount accessed or transferred; a partial read is not automatically billed as the full object size. Your restore tool’s request pattern still affects operation costs.

Nearline’s 30-day minimum and early deletion

Nearline has a 30-day minimum storage duration. If an object is deleted, replaced, or moved before that period is complete, Google can apply an early-deletion charge as though the object had been stored for the minimum duration. This matters when a backup job frequently rotates short-lived objects or rewrites the same names.

Model retention and turnover—not just capacity—before choosing Nearline. A backup set that remains stable for months is less exposed than one replaced every few days.

Nearline, Coldline, or Archive?

Google documents longer minimum durations and lower starting storage rates for colder classes. The right choice depends on restore frequency, restore volume, retention, and recovery objectives—not storage price alone.

Class Starting storage rate (Google Cloud overview, inspected 2026-09-27) Minimum storage duration Documented access pattern
Nearline $0.01 per GiB per month 30 days Read or modified about once per month or less; backup use case
Coldline $0.004 per GiB per month 90 days Accessed at most once per quarter
Archive $0.0012 per GiB per month 365 days Expected to be accessed less than once a year; lowest-cost choice when kept entirely for backup or archiving

These are starting storage figures, not comparable total bills. Google’s storage-class documentation says Coldline or Archive may be more cost-effective than Nearline when data is accessed less often than once per quarter. Frequent recovery, shorter retention, or a tighter recovery-time objective can make Nearline’s higher storage rate worthwhile.

Availability is not the same as a recovery guarantee

For Nearline, Google reports typical monthly availability of 99.95% in multi-regions and dual-regions, and 99.9% in regions. Its listed availability SLA is 99.9% for multi-/dual-regions and 99.0% in regions. “Typical” describes observed or expected service availability; the SLA is the contractual service-level commitment and should not be presented as the same number.

Location also affects storage, operation, replication, and network pricing. Select a region, dual-region, or multi-region based on where systems run, where recovery data must be delivered, and the resilience your plan requires.

Build a real backup plan around Nearline

Nearline is a storage class, not an automatic device-backup schedule. Your process must create backups, retain the versions you need, test recovery, and control who can delete or alter objects.

Protect against accidental or malicious changes

Google’s disaster-recovery guidance states: “To protect your data in a Cloud Storage bucket against accidental or malicious deletion, you can use the Soft Delete feature to preserve deleted and overwritten objects for a specified period, and the Object holds feature to prevent deletion or updates to objects.” Configure retention and access controls to match your recovery policy; these features do not by themselves define how often backups run or how long they are kept.

Plan and test restores

  • Set a target recovery point: how much recent data may be lost.
  • Set a recovery time and expected restore volume.
  • Estimate retrieval, operation, and destination-transfer costs for a normal restore and a disaster-scale restore.
  • Run periodic recovery tests, including the read frequency that your chosen class is designed to support.

Move data into Cloud Storage

Google’s Architecture Center identifies Storage Transfer Service for importing data from Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, or on-premises sources, and for backing up data from other storage providers to Cloud Storage. That is a migration or transfer building block; you still need a schedule, retention policy, credentials, and restore procedure.

How to estimate your actual Nearline bill

Use Google’s pricing calculator linked from the Cloud Storage overview, and gather these inputs first:

  1. Stored capacity: average GiB in the bucket, including retained versions.
  2. Location: region, dual-region, or multi-region.
  3. Object and request profile: object count and the uploads, lists, reads, rewrites, and deletes generated by the backup software.
  4. Retention and turnover: how long each object remains before replacement or deletion, to expose 30-day early-deletion charges.
  5. Recovery pattern: how often restores occur and how many GiB are read each time.
  6. Destination: where recovered data goes and whether it leaves Google Cloud.
  7. Protection features: any Soft Delete, holds, replication, Autoclass, or Storage Intelligence configuration.

For example, 1,000 GiB stored for a full month has a storage-component starting point of $10 at $0.01 per GiB-month. It is not a forecast of the invoice: the bucket’s location, requests, retrievals, transfers, and retention behavior still determine the total.

When Nearline is a sensible choice

  • Your backup data is normally read no more than about monthly.
  • You want online access for disaster-recovery tests rather than an offline archive.
  • Objects generally remain stored at least 30 days.
  • You have budgeted occasional retrieval and network-transfer costs.
  • Your backup design includes retention, deletion protection, permissions, and tested restores.

Choose Coldline or Archive when access is substantially less frequent and their 90-day or 365-day minimums fit your retention cycle. Choose based on the complete recovery and protection design, not the headline storage rate.
