Gartner’s 2020 Magic Quadrant for Data Science and Machine Learning Platforms looked markedly different from the previous year. A contemporaneous comparison counted 16 vendors: six Leaders, one Challenger, seven Visionaries and two Niche Players. Alteryx, Dataiku, Databricks and MathWorks joined continuing Leaders SAS and TIBCO; SAP was dropped, and no new vendor entered the chart.
What the 2020 chart measured
The chart was Gartner’s historical Magic Quadrant for Data Science and Machine Learning Platforms, not a current ranking. Gartner’s framework positions vendors on two axes: Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision. A vendor’s quadrant therefore expresses Gartner’s comparative market assessment at that time; it does not prove that the platform is the best choice for every workload, budget, architecture or team.
How the 2020 leaderboard was distributed
A February 2020 KDnuggets comparison reported this four-quadrant split for 16 evaluated vendors:
| Quadrant | Vendors counted | Named vendors or change noted in the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Leaders | 6 | Alteryx, Dataiku, Databricks, MathWorks, SAS and TIBCO |
| Challengers | 1 | The comparison did not identify the Challenger in the available account |
| Visionaries | 7 | KNIME and RapidMiner were described as falling from Leader to Visionary; the full seven-vendor roster is not established here |
| Niche Players | 2 | The comparison did not provide the complete two-vendor roster |
The counts and roster observations above are attributed to the KDnuggets comparison, rather than presented as a re-created copy of Gartner’s original chart.

Which platforms moved up?
Four vendors entered the Leader group
The KDnuggets comparison identified Alteryx, Dataiku, Databricks and MathWorks as newly placed in the Leader quadrant, alongside SAS and TIBCO, which it described as continuing Leaders. This is a change in chart position between editions, not a measured claim that each product’s technical performance improved by a particular amount.
MathWorks moved from Visionary to Leader
The exact-title analysis at DataScienceCentral specifically described MathWorks moving from Visionary to Leader. The available material does not establish a numeric movement distance or a separately tested cause for that change.
Databricks and IBM were highlighted as upward movers
That same analysis called Databricks and IBM significant upward movers. “Upward” refers to their position relative to the prior chart; the excerpts do not establish IBM’s exact 2020 quadrant or a quantified coordinate change.
Which vendors moved down or left the chart?
KNIME and RapidMiner
The KDnuggets account described KNIME and RapidMiner as falling from Leader to Visionary. That is a relative chart movement, not a conclusion that either platform became unusable or that all customers should switch products.

Rank #3
SAP was dropped
The comparison reported that SAP was dropped from the 2020 evaluation. “Dropped” means it was no longer included in that edition’s vendor set; it does not, by itself, explain SAP’s product strategy, customer results or present-day availability.
No new entrants
Compared with the prior year, the comparison reported no new entrants. The notable change was therefore the reshuffling of existing vendors—especially the Leader group—rather than expansion of the field.
Rank #4
Why a quadrant change is not a buying verdict
For someone responsible for an analytics budget, the 2020 chart is useful historical context but an incomplete procurement model. Before treating a Leader position as a recommendation, compare each candidate with your own requirements:
- Workloads: supervised learning, forecasting, experimentation, automated machine learning or other tasks you actually run.
- Deployment: cloud, on-premises or hybrid constraints, including data-residency rules.
- Integration: existing data warehouses, notebooks, orchestration, identity systems and production pipelines.
- Governance: approval workflows, auditability, model monitoring, access controls and regulatory obligations.
- People and operating model: the programming, statistics and engineering skills available to build and maintain models.
- Total cost: recurring licenses, infrastructure, implementation, training and the cost of operating models after deployment.
Gartner’s two axes do not supply a consistent, vendor-by-vendor answer to those buyer-specific questions. A lower-ranked platform can still fit a particular organization better, while a Leader can be uneconomical or difficult to integrate.

How to use the 2020 leaderboard responsibly
- Set the date boundary. Label every reference as the 2020 Gartner chart so historical positions are not mistaken for current standings.
- Use the quadrant as a shortlist signal. Start with the six reported Leaders and any other vendors relevant to your environment, rather than treating the chart as an automatic winner.
- Validate with your own proof of concept. Test representative data, deployment paths, governance controls and hand-offs to production.
- Model the full budget. Separate subscription or license costs from cloud consumption, implementation work and ongoing operations.
- Document trade-offs. Record why a platform met or missed your requirements; the chart alone cannot provide that evidence.
Limits of the historical comparison
The complete 2020 Gartner report and its chart coordinates are not available in the cited material. Consequently, there is no established numeric distance for any vendor’s movement and no complete year-over-year coordinate table here. Movement explanations should be read as interpretations attributed to the contemporaneous articles, not as independently tested causes.
