Re:

Could ABBAtars Be the Business Model for the Metaverse and 5G?

ABBAtars offer a credible, bounded metaverse business model through ticketed, licensed entertainment. ABBA Voyage shows the pattern; 5G and edge computing can extend it, but cannot replace demand, rights or sound unit economics.

Yes—but only in a narrower, more practical sense than the phrase “metaverse business model” suggests. ABBA Voyage shows that licensed digital performers can sell a premium, repeatable entertainment experience in a physical venue. Customers buy a concert, emotional connection and spectacle; the performers happen to be digital.

That makes ABBAtars a credible content-led use case for 5G, edge computing and extended reality (XR). It does not prove that connectivity alone can create a profitable metaverse. Demand, rights, production economics, venue utilization and fresh content still determine whether the model works.

What “ABBAtars” are

“ABBAtar” is Collins’ term for an avatar of an ABBA member. In ABBA Voyage, life-size digital versions of the Swedish group perform in a purpose-built venue alongside a 10-piece live band. The show combines rendered performers with physical musicians, lighting, sound and live event operations.

The important commercial innovation is not simply that the singers are digital. It is that a familiar entertainment product—a ticketed concert—provides a clear reason to pay. The digital likenesses are the delivery mechanism for the experience, not the entire proposition.

Is ABBA Voyage a metaverse use case or just a concert?

It is both a concert and a limited, controlled bridge between physical and digital worlds. The audience occupies a real venue, while the headliners are generated digital characters synchronized with live performers. That fits the European Commission’s 2023 description of virtual worlds as persistent immersive digital environments that blend physical and digital elements in real time, although ABBA Voyage is more bounded than an always-on, user-created metaverse.

This distinction matters for business planning. A venue can control its network, rendering pipeline, show timing, safety procedures and customer journey. A universal metaverse must solve those problems across many devices, locations, identities and creators at once. ABBAtars therefore demonstrate a commercially testable format, not proof that every metaverse concept will attract paying users.

The business model in one view

The documented ABBA pattern is a licensed digital act plus a produced show, venue, ticket and supporting live performers. Its economics can be compared with more familiar digital models:

Model Primary revenue Reach Main cost profile Distinctive risk
Avatar residency Tickets and on-site spending One venue or a small number of venues High upfront capture, rendering, venue and production costs Rights, local demand and utilization
Touring avatar installation Tickets, venue deals and licensing Multiple cities over time Replication, transport, setup and local operations Whether the show can be reproduced reliably
Digital access Streaming, subscriptions or paid virtual attendance Potentially global Software distribution, bandwidth and customer acquisition Lower willingness to pay than an in-person spectacle
Sponsored or branded world Advertising, sponsorship and transactions Distributed online audience Platform, moderation and creator-economy infrastructure Engagement and brand-safety uncertainty
Technology licensing Enterprise contracts, partnerships or joint ventures Other artists, venues and industries Productization, support and integration Long sales cycles and dependence on specialist capability

Only the first row is directly evidenced by the ABBA Voyage case. Touring, digital distribution, sponsorship, merchandise, recorded versions and technology licensing are logical extensions to test, not disclosed ABBA revenue figures.

Where 5G and edge computing fit

5G supplies capacity and responsiveness; it does not supply content rights or an audience. The European Commission identifies faster data transfer, lower latency, wider coverage and greater reliability as ways 5G can support connected physical objects and immersive applications. Cloud-to-edge infrastructure can place rendering and data processing closer to the venue or user.

Nokia’s annual filing summarizes the infrastructure view: “We see the network as the key enabler of metaverse opportunities, but the network capabilities will need to evolve to fulfill the anticipated needs.” That is an enabling-technology statement, not a guarantee of returns.

A practical ABBAtar architecture

  1. Venue layer: projection or display systems, acoustics, lighting, stage controls, ticketing, accessibility and physical operations.
  2. Content and rights layer: performer likeness permissions, music rights, motion capture, choreography, rendering assets and a process for updating the show.
  3. Connectivity and compute layer: fiber or private 5G, cloud rendering, edge processing, synchronization, monitoring and content distribution.
  4. Audience layer: in-person attendance first, with optional augmented-reality (AR), virtual-reality (VR), second-screen, remote or interactive features.

A venue can begin with wired connectivity and add private 5G where mobility, device density or interactive features justify it. The network choice should follow the show’s latency, reliability and throughput requirements rather than precede the content decision.

What the wider infrastructure claims mean

The Commission’s Digital Decade objective is 5G for all populated areas in Europe by 2030. Its 2023 staff working document also cites an estimate that modest use of virtual worlds could increase current data usage twentyfold. That figure is an estimate, not an audited outcome, and does not establish demand or profitability for avatar entertainment. The same document records disagreement among stakeholders about optimistic market and usage projections.

How digital avatars can make money

1. Premium admission

Ticketing is the clearest starting point. A recognizable artist, controlled seating capacity and a high-production show let an operator test price, sell-through, repeat attendance and venue utilization in conventional event terms.

2. Licensed installations

A show can be licensed to additional venues or cities if the rights package, technical specification and operating procedures are portable. Each new location must still support local demand, staffing, safety and maintenance.

3. On-site spending and merchandise

Food, beverages and merchandise can increase revenue per visitor, but they should be modeled as additions to ticket economics rather than assumed to rescue an underperforming show.

4. Digital extensions

Recorded performances, paid streams, remote attendance, AR layers or VR versions could widen reach. They also introduce platform fees, piracy exposure, device friction and a different willingness to pay, so their economics should be measured separately from the venue show.

5. Sponsorship and technology licensing

Brands, telecom operators or production companies may pay for association, integration or access to the underlying pipeline. Nokia describes licensing, partnerships and joint ventures as ways to create value around technology portfolios. Such deals are potential enterprise models, not evidence that every avatar project will secure them.

A unit-economics test for operators and investors

The central question is whether each performance produces enough contribution margin to recover the substantial fixed investment. A simple model is:

  • Revenue per show: paid attendance × average ticket price, plus documented on-site and sponsorship revenue.
  • Variable cost per show: venue labor, live-band costs, bandwidth, energy, transaction fees and show-specific staffing.
  • Contribution per show: revenue per show minus variable cost per show.
  • Break-even performances: fixed development, rights, capture, rendering and venue costs divided by contribution per show.

Do not fill this model with a speculative global metaverse market size. The cited sources establish neither an audited worldwide ABBAtar market nor a definitive return-on-investment figure. A credible decision uses signed rights terms, a venue capacity and calendar, tested ticket demand, production quotes, network costs and a contingency for technical failure.

What would make the model repeatable?

  1. Prove one venue: Measure sell-through, repeat attendance, average spend, accessibility performance and incident rates before expanding.
  2. Secure durable rights: Define likeness, music, territory, term, approvals, moral-rights issues and permitted updates in writing.
  3. Standardize the production: Document capture, rendering, synchronization, show control, maintenance and failure recovery so another venue is not a bespoke engineering project.
  4. Match connectivity to the experience: Use private 5G, edge processing or cloud distribution only where they improve reliability, mobility, interactivity or operating cost.
  5. Add digital access cautiously: Test remote or XR versions as separate products, with their own pricing and retention metrics.
  6. Refresh the content: New songs, scenes, collaborations or seasonal elements can support repeat visits; a static show eventually competes on novelty alone.

Constraints that can break the economics

  • Rights: Artist likeness, music, choreography and archival material require continuing permissions. A technically perfect avatar without enforceable rights is not a product.
  • Capital intensity: Capture, rendering, venue fit-out and show development occur before ticket revenue is proven.
  • Utilization: A fixed venue needs enough performances and demand across the calendar to cover its overhead.
  • Network variability: 5G deployment is uneven by geography, and wireless connectivity does not eliminate the need for resilient wired systems and local failover.
  • Operations and safety: Crowd management, accessibility, emergency procedures and equipment maintenance remain physical-world responsibilities.
  • Consumer adoption: People may value an emotional concert more than an abstract promise of a persistent virtual world. Headset ownership and comfort can further limit optional XR products.
  • Forecast uncertainty: High-level data-usage or metaverse forecasts are scenarios, not guaranteed revenue pools.

Do you need a VR headset?

No. ABBA Voyage is experienced in a physical venue without requiring audience members to own a VR headset. A metaverse-related experience can use projection, sound, lighting, phones, AR glasses or VR, depending on the product. Headsets are an optional interface, not a definition of the business model.

What this means for a personal-finance decision

For an individual evaluating an investment, job opportunity or business proposal, treat the avatar concept as an entertainment and infrastructure venture with identifiable cash-flow drivers—not as automatic exposure to a promised metaverse boom. Look for contracted rights, a credible venue plan, evidence of ticket demand, realistic utilization, a contingency budget and transparent separation between recurring revenue and one-time sponsorship.

Telecom and cloud companies may benefit when immersive applications increase traffic and demand for edge capacity, but the Commission’s infrastructure objectives and Nokia’s network thesis do not establish which vendors will capture profits. The investable question is execution: who owns the content, who pays for the build, who bears technical failure and how many paying experiences are required to break even?

Verdict

ABBAtars can be a business model for a practical slice of the metaverse: premium, licensed, location-based entertainment that uses digital performers and physical production. They are not, by themselves, a universal model for persistent virtual worlds, and 5G is an enabling layer rather than a source of demand. The strongest path is content first, controlled venue economics second, and network-enabled expansion only after the audience and rights case has been proven.
