AI is shifting coupon use from searching and copying codes to getting offers selected, tested, and surfaced automatically. Retailers and shopping tools can personalize discounts, compare prices, test promo codes at checkout, and send price-drop or reward alerts. The trade-off is that personalization and automation may depend on browsing and purchase data, so shoppers should check what a tool collects and how much control it gives them.
What changes when AI enters couponing?
Traditional couponing often meant finding an offer, checking its terms, and entering a code yourself. A digital shopping assistant can shorten that process by recognizing a retailer, searching for available codes, comparing prices, or presenting an offer it predicts will be relevant. Some tools also notify users when a price changes or a reward becomes available.
That does not mean every digital coupon feature is powered by AI. Automatic code testing and price comparison are forms of shopping automation; a product’s feature description alone does not establish which underlying technology it uses. AI is also being applied to personalization and, in the emerging idea of agentic commerce, to assistants that can handle more steps of a shopping task.
How shoppers encounter AI-powered offers
Personalized discounts and recommendations
Instead of showing every customer the same promotion, a retailer may use shopping signals to decide which offer or product suggestion to show and when. Walmart’s 2024 adaptive-retail research describes the expected direction as anticipating individual needs and delivering suggestions at the right moment. Adobe’s 2025 survey found a gap between expectations and reported performance: 69% of respondents wanted retailers to anticipate needs with relevant offers or information at the right moment, while 35% said brands delivered effectively.

Personalization can make a discount feel more useful when it matches something a shopper wants. In RRD’s 2024 report, 55% of consumers said personalized discounts made them feel valued. But a personalized offer is not automatically the best deal: it is still worth checking the final price, eligibility rules, and whether the purchase was already planned.
Automatic code testing and price checks
Browser extensions and shopping tools can take over some of the manual work at checkout. Capital One Shopping says its extension tests community-sourced promo codes, compares prices, and can send deal or price-drop alerts. PayPal Honey says it tests codes at checkout on more than 30,000 sites. Those product descriptions concern stated features; coverage, availability, and terms can change.
These tools can save time, but a code test does not guarantee that a valid discount exists or that the displayed offer is the lowest total price. Check shipping, taxes, minimum spend, exclusions, and the price at other sellers before completing an order.

Cashback and rewards
Digital couponing increasingly sits alongside rewards rather than replacing them. A shopper may encounter a coupon, cashback offer, or loyalty reward in the same shopping flow. In a July 2025 survey of 1,000 U.S. adults by Wildfire Systems and Big Village, 78% said they were more interested in cashback rewards and digital coupons, and 61% said they had used AI tools. These results describe that survey’s respondents, not the share of all coupon use that is AI-driven.
What survey figures say about adoption and trust
Survey results point to interest in convenience and savings, alongside caution about delegating decisions or sharing data. The figures below come from different organizations and survey populations, so they should not be treated as one combined measure of AI coupon use.
| Finding | Source and qualification |
|---|---|
| 70% were familiar with AI in retail, and more than half had a positive impression. | SPAR Group, 2025; survey fielded in December 2024 among more than 1,000 U.S. consumers. |
| Roughly two-thirds said they use or would use AI shopping agents to save time and find better prices. | Visa, 2025; surveyed consumers. The finding combines current use and willingness to use. |
| Nearly nine in ten wanted transparency into how AI agents make decisions. | Visa, 2025; surveyed consumers. |
| 46% were somewhat or very unlikely to let a digital assistant handle an entire shopping trip. | Walmart, 2025; respondents to Walmart’s report. |
| 60% of shoppers wanted AI-powered shopping features. | DHL, 2025; U.S. shoppers. |
| 87% expected personal data to be handled responsibly and securely, while 46% said brands delivered effectively. | Adobe, 2025; survey respondents. |
| 51% preferred coupon books in newspapers or mail. | RRD, 2024 report, drawing on an awareness-to-action study conducted in August 2023. |
Together, these results suggest that shoppers may welcome help finding savings without wanting to hand over every decision. Visa’s 2025 findings capture that tension: many respondents were open to shopping agents for convenience and better prices, while nearly nine in ten wanted to understand how those agents decide what to do.

What an AI shopping assistant might do next
Today, tools generally assist with parts of shopping: surfacing an offer, comparing prices, testing a code, or sending an alert. Agentic commerce describes a further step, in which an assistant can search, compare, and execute parts of a purchase on a user’s behalf. Visa’s 2025 survey suggests that saving time and finding better prices motivate interest, but it does not mean shoppers broadly want an assistant to control an entire transaction.
For coupon users, the practical distinction is how much authority the system has. A suggestion leaves the shopper to decide; an automatically applied code changes checkout with less effort; an agent that can complete a purchase would take on a more consequential role. Transparency about decisions and clear user approval matter more as that authority increases.

Compare tools by what they actually do rather than by whether they use the word “AI.” A code-testing extension, a retailer’s personalized offers, and a purchase-capable assistant have different functions and risks.
- Automation depth: Does the tool suggest offers, test codes automatically, or have authority to take further shopping actions?
- Coverage: Which merchants and countries are supported? Check current availability and eligibility before relying on a feature.
- Price comparison: Does it compare sellers or only test codes at the current store? Compare the full checkout total yourself.
- Rewards: Are cashback or loyalty benefits available for the specific merchant and location, and what conditions apply?
- Explainability and control: Can you see why an offer appeared, change personalization settings, or approve actions before purchase?
- Data and permissions: Review the privacy notice and browser or app permissions before enabling the tool.
At checkout, verify that the discount appears in the order total and that the offer’s conditions are met. If a code fails, the promotion may be expired, restricted to particular products or customers, or subject to a minimum purchase; do not assume the extension can override those rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What data can coupon tools use?
Personalization and deal alerts can rely on information about what people browse, consider, or buy. Capital One Shopping’s privacy policy lists browsing, product, transaction, purchase-history, location, and coupon-use data among possible data categories. Honey’s privacy statement describes shopping-history information and inferences used for personalization. These disclosures explain possible data practices; by themselves, they do not establish misuse.
Before installing an extension or connecting a shopping account, check its current privacy notice and settings. Look for what information is collected, how it is used, whether it is shared, and what controls are available. Grant only the permissions you are comfortable with, and revisit them if the product’s features or policy change.

Do AI coupons replace paper coupons?
No. Digital offers and automated shopping tools coexist with older coupon formats. RRD’s 2024 report found that 51% of consumers preferred coupon books in newspapers or mail, based on an underlying study conducted in August 2023. The finding is a dated preference measure, not evidence that print coupons are more or less effective than digital ones.
How much coupon use is actually driven by AI?
The available figures do not establish a universal share of coupons selected or redeemed by AI. The published numbers cited here measure attitudes toward AI shopping, reported use of AI tools, desired shopping features, or preferences for coupon formats. They show changing expectations and product capabilities, but they do not quantify how much of all couponing has shifted to AI.
