The clearest transaction in this story is not an acquisition: NVIDIA invested $2 billion in Marvell on March 31, 2026, while the companies expanded a partnership around NVIDIA’s NVLink Fusion ecosystem. Marvell separately completed its acquisition of XConn Technologies on February 10, 2026. Arista announced a competing high-speed Ethernet portfolio, but the available announcements do not establish an Arista corporate deal with either company.
Together, the moves show a data-center network market dividing into tightly coupled accelerator links, large Ethernet fabrics and optical interconnects. They also show why a switch’s headline bandwidth is not, by itself, proof of better end-to-end AI performance.
The transactions—and the important distinction about Arista
NVIDIA’s investment and NVLink Fusion partnership with Marvell
NVIDIA announced on March 31, 2026, that it had invested $2 billion in Marvell and would connect Marvell to its AI factory and AI-RAN ecosystem through NVLink Fusion. Marvell’s announced responsibilities include custom XPUs and NVLink Fusion-compatible scale-up networking. Marvell’s SEC filing describes the transaction as the issuance of Series A convertible preferred stock completed on that date, so it should be described as an investment and strategic partnership, not an acquisition.
NVIDIA’s announcement lists a broader platform around the relationship: Vera CPUs, ConnectX network interface cards, BlueField DPUs, NVLink interconnect, Spectrum-X switches and rack-scale AI compute. The same announcement covers cooperation on silicon photonics and AI-RAN for 5G and 6G. Those are announced areas of collaboration, not evidence that every component is already deployed in production.

Marvell’s acquisition of XConn
Marvell reported that it completed its acquisition of XConn Technologies on February 10, 2026. In its Form 10-Q, Marvell describes XConn as a provider of PCIe and CXL switching silicon. Marvell says the deal expands its switching portfolio and adds to its UALink scale-up switch team.
Arista announced products, not a documented transaction
Arista’s 2026 announcements describe a product and systems strategy rather than a merger, acquisition or investment involving NVIDIA or Marvell. Its 7060XE7 Series portfolio targets rack-scale AI infrastructure with 1.6T switching and both scale-up and scale-out fabrics. Treating that announcement as an “Arista deal” would overstate what has been established.
Where each company fits in the AI-network stack
AI clusters use several network layers. Scale-up links connect accelerators or tightly coupled nodes with demanding latency and coherency requirements. Scale-out fabrics connect many servers or racks, often using Ethernet. Optical interconnects move data between components or over longer distances while addressing reach and power constraints.

Why the NVIDIA–Marvell relationship matters
NVLink Fusion is intended to let selected custom silicon participate in an NVIDIA-designed rack-scale environment. That can give a custom-accelerator supplier access to NVIDIA’s interconnect and software-centered platform assumptions while allowing NVIDIA to broaden the silicon used inside an AI factory. It does not mean every custom XPU, switch or optical component automatically interoperates with every NVIDIA system; the announcement does not publish a complete compatibility matrix or production deployment list.
For infrastructure planners, the strategic change is the potential coupling of compute and networking decisions. A buyer evaluating a custom accelerator may need to assess the accelerator, scale-up switch, NIC or DPU, rack topology, software stack and optical links as one system rather than as isolated parts. For investors, the $2 billion preferred-stock investment signals strategic alignment, but the announcement does not disclose customer volumes, revenue contribution, margin impact or a timetable for commercial deployment.
Marvell’s expanded connectivity position
Custom silicon, switching and optics
Marvell presents itself across several layers: custom XPUs, scale-up networking, Ethernet switching, optical interconnect and silicon photonics. Its September 9, 2026 portfolio announcement describes the Teralynx T100 as a 102 Tbps Ethernet switch device. That is a Marvell specification, not an independently verified benchmark, and it does not state the throughput an entire deployed system will deliver under a particular AI workload.

What XConn adds
PCIe and CXL switching sit close to the servers and accelerators, while UALink is associated with scale-up accelerator connectivity. Marvell’s description of XConn therefore points to a broader switching portfolio and a larger internal team for scale-up technologies. The filing does not establish customer adoption, performance leadership or financial returns from the acquisition.
AI-RAN and photonics
The NVIDIA–Marvell announcement also covers AI-RAN and silicon photonics. These areas could connect data-center infrastructure with telecom and optical components, but the announcement alone cannot establish deployment timing, carrier adoption or the economics of those businesses.

Arista’s separate Ethernet-fabric strategy
7060XE7 and 1.6T fabrics
Arista’s June 9, 2026 announcement introduces the 7060XE7 Series 1.6T portfolio for rack-scale AI infrastructure. The company describes both scale-up and scale-out fabrics, identifies Broadcom Tomahawk 6 silicon in the portfolio and emphasizes its EOS software and systems approach. This is a platform strategy built around high-speed Ethernet and network operating software, distinct from NVIDIA’s integrated accelerator-and-network ecosystem.

Financial context, with the right qualification
In an August 4, 2026 results release for the quarter ended June 30, Arista said it had its first quarter above $3 billion in revenue and described liquid-cooled 1.6 Tbps AI-fabric options. Those are company-reported results and product descriptions; they are not independent evidence of market share, customer performance or superiority over Marvell or NVIDIA.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare the strategies without overreading bandwidth numbers
Scale-up versus scale-out
Ask whether a specification applies to links inside a tightly coupled accelerator domain or to an Ethernet fabric connecting racks. The two jobs have different latency, topology and software requirements, so a larger number in one layer is not automatically better in the other.
Integrated platform versus open Ethernet
NVIDIA’s approach emphasizes an integrated stack of accelerators, CPUs, NICs, DPUs, switches and interconnects. Arista emphasizes Ethernet systems and EOS software, while Marvell supplies silicon and connectivity that can appear in multiple architectures. The practical trade-off is usually between tighter vendor integration and the flexibility to mix suppliers, not between a universally “best” architecture and an inferior one.

Interoperability and deployment evidence
Before selecting equipment, require documentation for protocol support, topology limits, firmware and software compatibility, optical modules, serviceability and actual customer deployments. The announcements cited here do not provide a neutral, like-for-like benchmark covering latency, power, cooling, workload throughput and failure behavior.
Power, cooling and total system design
AI networking decisions include transceivers, cabling, rack density, liquid cooling, power delivery and thermal limits. A switch or fabric label such as 102 Tbps or 1.6 Tbps describes a product capability under the vendor’s stated conditions; it does not predict the performance or operating cost of a complete cluster.
What remains unknown
- Neither the NVIDIA–Marvell announcement nor the cited filings establish how many systems are shipping, which customers are deploying them or how much revenue the partnership will produce.
- The sources do not provide independent benchmarks comparing NVIDIA, Marvell and Arista on latency, workload throughput, power, cooling or total cost.
- The terms beyond the disclosed $2 billion preferred-stock investment, including economic effects for Marvell shareholders, are not established in the cited material.
- The available announcements do not identify a separate Arista acquisition, investment or partnership with NVIDIA or Marvell.
Bottom line
The landscape is being reshaped by complementary moves, not one three-way corporate deal. NVIDIA is extending an integrated AI-factory ecosystem through a $2 billion Marvell investment and NVLink Fusion partnership; Marvell is adding switching breadth through XConn and promoting Ethernet, optical and custom-silicon capabilities; Arista is advancing a separate 1.6T Ethernet-fabric platform. The durable takeaway is architectural: evaluate scale-up, scale-out, optics, software, interoperability and system-level evidence together, and treat vendor bandwidth figures as specifications rather than proof of end-to-end results.
