Ford’s August 11, 2025 event announced a new affordable-EV platform and factory system—not a complete vehicle reveal. Ford said the first product would be a midsize, four-door electric pickup built in Louisville for 2027. An August 2026 Axios report identifies the truck as Fathom, with a reported starting price of $28,350 and pre-orders planned for early 2027, but Ford has not yet published final specifications or shown the truck publicly.
What Ford announced on August 11
The Louisville, Kentucky event focused on the Ford Universal EV Platform and Ford Universal EV Production System. Ford said the first vehicle on that platform would be a midsize, four-door electric pickup assembled in Louisville for U.S. and export markets, with production planned for 2027.
At the event, Ford targeted a starting price of about $30,000. That was a company target, not a finalized consumer MSRP. Ford also said that the truck’s reveal date, EPA-estimated range, battery sizes, charge times and other specifications would be announced later.
Ford CEO Jim Farley described the project as an attempt to build an affordable EV “with American workers,” while EV chief Doug Field said it was “not a stripped-down, old-school vehicle.”

Axios reported on August 6, 2026 that the pickup will be called Fathom, will reportedly start at $28,350, and could open for pre-orders in early 2027. The same report said Ford had not yet shown the vehicle publicly.
Those details are newer than the 2025 announcement but remain report-level information until Ford issues a full consumer specification sheet. The table separates what Ford announced directly from what has since been reported.

How Ford says it can lower the cost
A simpler vehicle architecture
Ford says the Universal EV Platform uses 20% fewer parts and 25% fewer fasteners than its comparison vehicle or baseline. Fewer unique pieces and connections can reduce material, assembly and service complexity, although Ford’s figures are stated targets rather than independently verified results.

Less wiring
The midsize truck’s planned wiring harness is more than 4,000 feet (about 1.3 kilometers) shorter and 10 kilograms lighter than the harness in Ford’s first-generation electric SUV. A shorter harness can reduce material and installation work while leaving more packaging flexibility.

Ford says the structural battery pack uses prismatic lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells and is cobalt-free and nickel-free. The pack forms part of the vehicle floor, which can lower the center of gravity and avoid separate structural pieces. LFP chemistry is generally associated with lower-cost, widely available materials, but Ford has not yet published this truck’s usable capacity, energy consumption or range.
The “assembly tree” factory system
Instead of moving the entire vehicle through one long conveyor, Ford plans to build front, rear and structural-battery subassemblies on parallel branches and join them later. Large, single-piece aluminum castings are intended to replace dozens of smaller parts.

Factory spending and employment
Ford committed nearly $2 billion to its Louisville operation and said the investment would secure about 2,200 hourly jobs. Ford had separately announced $3 billion for BlueOval Battery Park Michigan.

What is still unknown about the truck
Neither the 2025 announcement nor the cited 2026 report establishes a complete buying specification. Ford has not confirmed:
- EPA-estimated range
- Battery capacity or available battery sizes
- DC charging speed, charging time or connector type
- Payload, towing capacity or bed dimensions
- Trim levels, options, warranty terms or destination charges
- Final MSRP and the date a customer can take delivery
Axios additionally reported five-adult seating, a frunk, bidirectional power, a large touchscreen and BlueCruise integration. Those features should be treated as reported claims until Ford publishes final specifications.
What a $28,350 starting price would mean for a buyer
The reported $28,350 figure is a starting price, not a complete purchase budget. A buyer should wait for Ford’s final MSRP and add destination charges, taxes, registration, insurance, financing costs, charging equipment and electricity. The available evidence does not establish whether that figure includes a particular trim, battery, delivery fee or any federal, state or local incentive.

For household planning, the practical questions are the vehicle’s final out-the-door price, monthly payment at current interest rates, insurance cost and the cost of charging at home or on public networks. Those calculations cannot be completed reliably until Ford publishes the truck’s battery, charging and warranty details.
Timeline to watch
- August 11, 2025: Ford announced the Universal EV Platform, the Louisville-built midsize electric pickup and a roughly $30,000 target.
- August 6, 2026: Axios reported the Fathom name, a $28,350 reported starting price and planned early-2027 pre-orders.
- Early 2027: Pre-orders are planned according to the Axios report, subject to Ford opening its ordering process.
- 2027: Ford’s announced production and launch window for the Louisville pickup.
The direct answer to the original August 11 question is therefore qualified: Ford revealed its affordability strategy and the outline of its first vehicle, not the final truck. Fathom’s price, specifications, ordering process and public reveal still require confirmation from Ford.
