IBM appointed Andrew Gill vice-president for Ecosystems UK & Ireland in August 2024, bringing him back to the company after 26 years in IBM roles and more than three years as Nutanix’s channel director. His remit was to grow IBM’s partner ecosystem and help UK and Irish partners build hybrid-cloud and AI solutions using watsonx.

Who is Andrew Gill, and why did IBM bring him back?

MicroScope reported the appointment on 5 August 2024; ChannelWeb independently reported the same move. Gill had spent 26 years at IBM across systems, services and channel roles before joining Nutanix, where he served as channel director for more than three years. IBM selected him to lead ecosystem growth in the UK and Ireland, drawing on that experience across IBM’s business and the partner channel.

Gill succeeded Alison Say, who left for Microsoft to become senior director for GSI and advisory partners. IBM UK&I general manager for technology Eliot Frederiksen described Gill as an experienced channel leader with expertise in hybrid cloud and AI, and said the company was investing to help partners address customer demand for those solutions through watsonx.

What was Gill responsible for at IBM?

His stated remit centered on three connected priorities: developing IBM’s partner ecosystem in the UK and Ireland, building on the IBM Partner Plus programme, and helping partners design, deploy and support hybrid-cloud and AI solutions. IBM framed partners as central to serving enterprise demand for those technologies.

Gill said the ecosystem was critical to IBM’s future success and that he intended to build on Partner Plus to deliver client value, business outcomes and mutual success with partners. These statements describe IBM’s priorities at the time of the appointment; they do not establish later performance or confirm who holds the role now.

What does IBM Partner Plus mean for UK partners?

Partner Plus is IBM’s partner programme, launched on 4 January 2023, and was the programme Gill was expected to build on in the UK and Ireland. The appointment coverage links it to IBM’s broader effort to work with partners on customer solutions, including hybrid cloud and AI.

The 2024 appointment reports do not specify current enrollment rules, eligibility, incentives, commercial terms or the precise benefits available to UK partners. Those details should be checked against IBM’s current programme information rather than inferred from the appointment announcement.

What growth targets had IBM discussed?

MicroScope reported historical targets associated with Partner Plus under Gill’s predecessor, Alison Say. They were ambitions announced in 2023, not verified results:

  • Double IBM’s channel base in three years.
  • Triple new logos in a similar timeframe.
  • Double ecosystem business over three to five years.

The figures should not be read as outcomes, or as current forecasts. The appointment reporting does not provide subsequent measurements against them.

What does the appointment say about IBM’s partner strategy?

The appointment signals that IBM viewed its ecosystem as a route to serving enterprise demand for hybrid cloud and AI, with watsonx among the technologies partners could use in customer solutions. IBM’s stated approach was to enable partners to design, deploy and support those solutions, rather than simply announce a change in sales leadership.

The reporting establishes IBM’s priorities and ambitions, but it does not quantify partner revenue, customer wins or programme results. It also does not provide a like-for-like comparison with another technology vendor’s partner programme.
