How to hire these roles with a skills-first process

1. Write outcomes, not inflated wish lists

Describe the problem the hire will solve, the systems or customers affected and what success looks like after six or 12 months. Separate must-have capabilities from skills a strong candidate can learn. LinkedIn reports that employers are increasingly prioritizing skills over degrees, job titles and linear career paths.

2. Use a realistic work sample

  • AI: evaluate a model, design a prompt-testing plan or investigate an error pattern.
  • Data: repair a data-quality issue, propose an experiment and explain the decision it supports.
  • Software: extend a small codebase, add tests and discuss maintainability.
  • Security: perform a threat-model exercise, review insecure code or prioritize incidents.
  • Cloud and data engineering: sketch an architecture, pipeline or recovery plan with explicit trade-offs.
  • FinTech: reason through a payment failure, reconciliation problem or control requirement.
  • Design: synthesize research, prototype an accessible flow and explain measurement.
  • Program management: build a delivery plan from dependencies, risks and a changing deadline.

Keep exercises job-relevant, time-bounded and paid when they require substantial original work.

3. Test AI literacy wherever AI is involved

Ask candidates to explain limitations, evaluation methods, privacy, security, data provenance and when human review is required. LinkedIn reports that U.S. jobs requiring AI-literacy skills grew 70% year over year in its 2026 labor-market release; literacy is therefore broader than an AI-specialist requirement.

4. Score human capabilities explicitly

Use anchored interview criteria for adaptability, problem-solving, critical thinking, communication and ethical judgment. LinkedIn’s 2026 analysis says the advantage comes from combining technical fluency with these human capabilities.

5. Compare candidates on the same scorecard

  • Technical depth for the actual stack and level.
  • Domain context and ability to learn the missing pieces.
  • Security, reliability and privacy responsibility.
  • Learning curve and evidence of adapting to new tools.
  • Human-judgment load: decisions that cannot be safely automated.

Which technology career should you switch into?

Choose based on adjacent strengths rather than a headline ranking:

  • Analytical and quantitative background: data science, data engineering or machine learning.
  • Software background: application development, platform engineering, security or FinTech.
  • Operations background: cloud/platform, cybersecurity or technical program management.
  • Research background: computer and information research science or advanced AI.
  • Design and research background: UX, product or human-computer interaction.

Build a small portfolio that demonstrates the target role’s work sample, then verify demand in the specific city or remote market where you can legally work. National projections do not guarantee an opening, salary or visa sponsorship for an individual applicant.

Are AI jobs replacing software developers?

Current evidence points to task and skill changes rather than a simple replacement story. WEF estimates that AI and information-processing technologies could create 11 million jobs while displacing 9 million worldwide by 2030. Developers still need to design systems, verify generated code, manage production risk and understand users; AI increases the value of evaluation, security, data quality and judgment around that work.
