Usually not—unless the specific used unit is inexpensive, tested, complete and protected by a meaningful return policy. The original Antec HCG-520 was a respectable budget power supply when it launched, but its 2011 value case does not automatically transfer to a used unit today. A September 2026 US listing asked $37.95 with no returns, while Antec currently documents a new 550W NeoECO Classic V2 with a five-year warranty. Treat the HCG-520 as a conditional used-market purchase, not an automatic bargain.
First, identify the exact HCG-520
The model covered here is the original Antec High Current Gamer HCG-520: a 520W, 80 PLUS Bronze, non-modular ATX supply with a single +12V rail. Hardware Secrets identifies Seasonic as the manufacturer of this original 520W version (Hardware Secrets). Do not apply these specifications to the semi-modular HCG-520M or later HCG Bronze and Gold models without checking the label.
The reviewed specification assigns 40A, or 480W, to +12V. AnandTech described two 6/8-pin PCIe connectors on one cable, a 4+4-pin CPU connector and a 24-pin motherboard cable (AnandTech). Inspect the actual listing and cable set: similar model names do not guarantee identical connectors.
What the original reviews actually established
AnandTech’s 2011 value judgment
In its May 31, 2011 review, AnandTech called the HCG-520 a “decent mainstream PSU” and recorded a $60 price and three-year warranty at that time. The review found acceptable performance, good voltage regulation for an affordable unit and quiet operation at light loads. Its fan became moderately loud at higher loads, and the fixed cables and basic accessory package reduced convenience. Those are measurements of a 2011 review sample—not proof of the condition or performance of a used unit in 2026.

Tech-Review.de’s 2014 qualification
Tech-Review.de’s August 26, 2014 assessment called it not a bad power supply but preferred the Antec True Power Classic 450C at approximately the same local price, citing a stronger platform, higher efficiency, a more compact case and lower noise (Tech-Review.de). That comparison is also historical and market-specific, but it shows that the HCG-520’s value depended heavily on price and alternatives.
What a current listing tells you—and what it does not
A US eBay page observed in September 2026 showed one used HCG-520 at US$37.95 with no returns (eBay listing). This is one asking price, not a completed-sale statistic, market average, verified operating test or fair-value estimate. No age, internal condition or usage history for that individual unit is established by the listing observation.

Do not calculate a bargain by simply discounting the original $60 price. That figure was a 2011 launch-era price, not an inflation-adjusted or current replacement value. Compare the delivered cost, return rights and risk of the particular used unit with a new, warranted supply.
Used HCG-520 versus a new alternative
| Factor | Original HCG-520 | Antec NeoECO Classic 550 V2 |
|---|---|---|
| Output and certification | 520W; 80 PLUS Bronze in historical reviews | 550W; Bronze specification on Antec’s current product page |
| +12V and connectors | Reviewed unit: 40A/480W +12V; verify the actual cable set | Consult the current regional specification and confirm connectors for your build |
| Warranty evidence | Three years in AnandTech’s 2011 review; coverage for a used listing is not established | Five-year warranty documented by Antec |
| Condition and returns | Used; one observed listing had no returns | New-unit comparison; live regional stock and price are not established |
| Noise and cable management | Fixed cables; historical review reported moderate noise at higher loads | Current product page should be checked for the exact acoustic and cable details |
Antec’s official page documents the NeoECO Classic 550 V2 (NE550C V2) with OCP, OVP, UVP, SCP, OPP and NLO protections and a five-year warranty (Antec NeoECO Classic 550 V2). The page does not establish a live price or availability in every country. Use it as a comparison category, then check an authorized seller’s delivered price.

How to decide before paying
- Confirm the model. Read the label and verify it is the original HCG-520, not HCG-520M or another generation.
- Match the electrical requirements. Add your system’s expected CPU and GPU demand, then confirm that the unit’s +12V capacity and PCIe, CPU and motherboard connectors meet the build. The 520W label alone is not enough.
- Price the risk. Include shipping and any adapter or replacement-cable cost. Compare that delivered total with a new Bronze unit carrying a warranty.
- Check provenance. Ask for serial-label photos, operating history, signs of heat or corrosion and confirmation that every required cable is included. Never substitute modular cables from another PSU.
- Require an exit. A return window or buyer protection matters more for an old, untested supply than a small discount. A no-return listing should be priced as a high-risk purchase.
- Inspect before installation. Reject a unit with damaged insulation, bent contacts, a burnt smell, rattling, corrosion or a missing ground pin. Do not open the case; lethal voltage can remain inside.
Who should—and should not—buy it
It can make sense when
- The exact original model is confirmed and the cables fit your low-to-moderate-power system.
- The unit’s condition and history are credible, the seller accepts returns and the delivered price is clearly below a comparable new warranted PSU.
- You accept fixed cables and potentially greater fan noise under load.
Choose new instead when
- The price approaches a current 550W Bronze supply with a five-year warranty.
- The seller cannot verify operation, age, connectors or provenance.
- Your build has a high transient-load GPU, requires more PCIe connectors or leaves little power headroom.
- You need quiet operation, simpler cable management or dependable post-purchase support.
Bottom line
The Antec HCG-520 was good value around its 2011 $60 launch price, and the original platform earned generally favorable review comments. In 2026, however, a used unit is a bargain only after model verification, load-and-connector matching, condition checks and a risk-adjusted price comparison. At $37.95 with no returns, the observed listing does not by itself clear that bar. A new, warranted alternative is often the financially safer purchase when its delivered price is close.
