The company said its financial results and a tougher-than-expected outlook for the second half of 2024 forced difficult cost decisions. Intel also said the event change would not alter product launch timing or readiness.
What Intel announced
On August 9, 2024, Intel said it was postponing its Intel-hosted Innovation event from September 2024 until 2025. The company described the decision as deliberate: “After careful consideration, we have made the decision to postpone our Intel-hosted event, Intel Innovation in September, until 2025.” (Tom’s Hardware)
The planned event was a two-day conference in San Jose beginning September 24, 2024. Instead of staging that large conference during the remainder of 2024, Intel said it would hold smaller, more targeted events and participate in other industry gatherings. (SiliconANGLE)
Why Intel postponed Innovation
In a statement to PCMag reproduced by Tom’s Hardware, Intel tied the decision directly to its finances and near-term outlook:

“Given our financial results and the more challenging-than-expected outlook for the second half of 2024, which is tougher than previously expected, we are having to make some difficult decisions as we continue to align our cost structure and look to assess how we rebuild a sustainable engine of process technology leadership.”
That explanation came shortly after Intel reported weak second-quarter results and announced a broad efficiency program. Intel’s Q2 2024 release quoted CEO Pat Gelsinger calling the performance “disappointing,” despite milestones in products and process technology. (Intel’s Q2 2024 results)

The financial context in August 2024
Intel’s figures were for the quarter ended June 29, 2024, and should not be read as current results:
| Measure | Intel’s reported or planned figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Q2 2024 revenue | $12.8 billion | Company-reported quarterly revenue |
| Q2 2024 net result | $1.6 billion GAAP net loss attributable to Intel | GAAP loss for that quarter, not a full-year result |
| 2025 operating and capital expense target | More than $10 billion below previous estimates | Planned reductions, not completed savings |
| Workforce reduction expectation | Greater than 15%, with most completed by the end of 2024 | Management’s August 2024 expectation |
| 2024 capital-expenditure plan | More than 20% below prior projections | Planned reduction versus earlier estimates |
Gelsinger’s August 1 employee note described the pressure more bluntly: “Our revenues have not grown as expected – and we’ve yet to fully benefit from powerful trends, like AI. Our costs are too high, our margins are too low.” The note referred to roughly 15,000 roles, or about 15% of Intel’s workforce, in connection with the workforce action. (Intel employee note)

- Game Without Compromise. Play harder and work smarter with Intel Core 14th Gen processors
- 20 cores (8 P-cores plus 12 E-cores) and 28 threads. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 770 included
- Up to 5.6 GHz with Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0 gives you smooth game play, high frame rates, and rapid responsiveness
- Compatible with Intel 600-series (with potential BIOS update) or 700-series chipset-based motherboards
- DDR4 and DDR5 platform support cuts your load times and gives you the space to run the most demanding games
Intel presented these measures as part of a transformation aimed at improving operating and capital efficiency while continuing investment in technology and manufacturing. The cost program therefore was not an announcement that Intel was abandoning product development or process-technology work.
Was Intel Innovation canceled or delayed?
The August 2024 announcement described a postponement, not a permanent cancellation. The September conference was moved to 2025, while Intel planned smaller events and other industry appearances during the rest of 2024.

The contemporaneous sources available for this account do not establish whether Intel ultimately held, renamed, or canceled an Innovation event in 2025. The announcement should therefore be understood as a 2024 scheduling decision rather than proof of a later event outcome.

Intel said it did not. Its announcement-period position was that postponing the hosted conference would not change product launch plans, timing, or readiness. Intel also said it would provide more information about its Arrow Lake products later in 2024. (SiliconANGLE)

An event date and a product schedule serve different purposes. Innovation was a public and developer-focused conference; launches depend on product-development, validation, manufacturing, and commercial plans. Intel’s statement separated those functions, although it remained a company assurance made at the time, not independent confirmation of every later launch milestone.
What the postponement signaled
Moving a high-profile, company-hosted conference into a smaller-event strategy was consistent with Intel’s effort to reduce spending quickly as it confronted weaker revenue growth, lower margins, and a less favorable second-half outlook. The decision also let Intel preserve communication around products and technology through targeted appearances rather than committing to the cost and scale of a two-day flagship event.
In short, Intel postponed Innovation 2024 because of immediate financial pressure and a cost-reduction drive. It did not announce that its processor roadmap was being canceled or delayed, and the available announcement-period evidence does not determine what happened to the event in 2025.
