WIRED’s searchable map documents a federal-property list that GSA published on March 4, 2025, revised within hours and removed by the next day. It is a historical snapshot of potential disposals—not a live catalog of homes or buildings available to buy. For current GSA sale opportunities, use realestatesales.gov.
What happened to the GSA property list?
On March 4, 2025, GSA posted a list of federal properties being considered for disposal. WIRED reported that the original list contained more than 400 properties; 123, including prominent Washington, D.C., sites, were removed hours later. The list then disappeared from GSA’s website by the following day. The Associated Press counted 443 entries in the original version and 320 in the interim version, which omitted Washington, D.C. properties. The different totals refer to different versions of a rapidly changing list, not a single settled inventory.
GSA cautioned that inclusion did not mean an asset was immediately for sale. In a statement reported by the Associated Press on March 4, the agency said, “To be clear, just because an asset is on the list doesn’t mean it’s immediately for sale.” GSA said it would consider compelling offers and republish the list after reviewing stakeholder input and clarifying details about the assets. The available reporting does not establish why the list was ultimately removed or the current status of each property that appeared on it.
What WIRED’s map shows—and what it cannot tell you
WIRED created a searchable map and table by combining the original GSA non-core property list with the agency’s Inventory of Owned and Leased Properties (IOLP). The map also connects locations to their political representatives. Examples in WIRED’s coverage include Chicago’s John C. Kluczynski Federal Building and Custom House, the Martinsburg Computing Center, and Washington, D.C.’s Central Heating Plant.

Those examples underscore why “listed for disposal” should not be read as “vacant and ready to purchase.” The entries included historically significant buildings and facilities with active federal functions. The map helps locate properties on that withdrawn candidate list; it does not establish that a property is available, unoccupied, or being offered for sale now.
How to check current federal property information
| Resource | What it is for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| GSA Real Estate Sales | Browse and bid on current GSA real-estate sale opportunities. | It is a source for active opportunities, not a reconstruction of the March 2025 candidate list. |
| GSA Real Property Disposition | Explains how GSA disposes of surplus real property. | Disposition can take different forms; not every surplus property goes to a public auction. |
| Federal Real Property Profile (FRPP) public data | Provides annual public data on executive-branch real property. | It is an inventory, not a live sales feed, and it does not necessarily show every federal property. |
GSA’s disposition page, last updated February 3, 2026, says surplus property may be sold through public sale or auction, sold by negotiated sale, or transferred to a federal, state, or local government agency for a public purpose. Its guidance states, “We sell surplus property through:” and lists those routes.

The FRPP public-data page was last updated September 28, 2026, and identifies FY2025 as the latest available dataset. Its inventory reflects executive-branch assets at the end of each fiscal year, rather than current sale availability. The page also notes that the Federal Assets Sale and Transfer Act permits exclusions for national-security and Freedom of Information Act reasons; agencies decide which assets to exclude. As a result, the public dataset should not be treated as a complete live list of federal property.

A candidate listing and a completed disposition are different stages. The Government Accountability Office’s 2026 reporting on the Federal Assets Sale and Transfer Act (FASTA) temporary disposal process said 14 of 23 approved properties had been disposed of for about $576 million as of August 2026. That tally concerns the FASTA process, not the separate March 2025 non-core list.

GAO also reported that GSA had generated $1.4 billion in federal revenue from real-estate sales since 2013. In its 2026 account, GAO said half of GSA-owned buildings are prepared and sold in about a year, while some take more than ten years. Tenant relocation, environmental remediation, preservation requirements, public-use claims, and funding uncertainty can all extend the process. These broader figures describe federal disposition work; they do not reveal what happened to any particular entry on the withdrawn 2025 list.
