“Affordable” here means a target used-vehicle asking price below $45,000 in the United States—not a promise that every year, trim or mileage combination reaches that figure. iSeeCars’ current under-$45,000 rankings identify the following luxury SUVs as candidates, but local listings change constantly. A steep discount from original MSRP can reduce the purchase price while leaving fuel, insurance, maintenance and repair bills high.

Use this list to narrow a search, then compare the exact model year, generation, trim, mileage, condition, title history and local market. iSeeCars says its rankings combine reliability, value retention and safety data from more than 12 million new and used vehicles plus NHTSA and IIHS information; that is the company’s methodology, not an independent audit.

Ten used luxury SUVs to investigate under a $45,000 target

The candidates span compact crossovers, midsize two-row vehicles and three-row or full-size SUVs. They are not interchangeable: passenger space, fuel economy, driving character and ownership exposure differ substantially.

SUV Best fit Evidence in the current rankings What to verify before buying
Mercedes-Benz GLC Compact luxury crossover for city and commuting Topped iSeeCars’ under-$45,000 small/compact category; the category summary names the 2024 model year. Exact year and powertrain, service history, remaining warranty and local specialist support.
BMW X3 Compact SUV with a sportier driving bias Among the leading small luxury SUVs in the under-$45,000 list. Generation, engine, maintenance documentation, tire and brake condition, and accident history.
Acura RDX Two-row compact SUV with practical cargo space Ranked near the top of iSeeCars’ small-luxury entries. Trim equipment, all-wheel-drive system, maintenance records and recall status for the VIN.
Mercedes-Benz GLE Larger two-row luxury SUV The 2022 GLE topped the under-$45,000 midsize category. Whether the specific vehicle is two- or three-row, engine configuration, electronics and inspection results.
Lexus RX 350 Comfort-focused midsize two-row SUV One of the leading midsize candidates under $45,000. Do not confuse it with the RX 450h hybrid; check model year, drivetrain and battery-related coverage where applicable.
Audi Q7 Midsize SUV when available three-row seating is useful Appeared among leading midsize and three-row entries. Seven-seat configuration, maintenance records, air suspension or other optional systems, and a specialist inspection.
Lexus GX 460 Buyers who value a rugged, truck-based format Listed among leading used midsize and three-row SUVs under $45,000. Actual seating configuration, four-wheel-drive equipment, underbody condition, service history and fuel budget.
Acura MDX Families needing three rows Topped iSeeCars’ under-$45,000 three-row category. Third-row and cargo needs, model-year generation, drivetrain service and VIN-specific recalls.
Volvo XC90 Three-row buyers prioritizing Scandinavian design and features Led the under-$45,000 large-luxury-SUV category. Exact powertrain, electronic features, service intervals, warranty coverage and local Volvo expertise.
INFINITI QX80 Maximum cabin and towing-oriented size at a lower entry price A large, high-depreciation candidate in the current evidence. Fuel consumption, tire and brake costs, parking constraints, title history and full-size-SUV running costs.

Why these SUVs can look unusually cheap

Depreciation measures the fall from a vehicle’s original value; it does not measure what the next owner will spend. Finluxy’s reporting on iSeeCars’ 2026 study says more than 950,000 five-year-old used vehicles sold from March 2025 through February 2026 were analyzed. In that report, the INFINITI QX80 showed 62.8% five-year depreciation and the Land Rover Range Rover 61.7%. Finluxy’s report of iSeeCars’ 2025 study put the Audi Q7 at 61.6% over five years. These are cohort or model averages, not appraisals of a particular listing, and the percentages come through secondary reporting.

A lower transaction price can coexist with expensive parts, specialized labor, premium fuel, higher insurance, rapid tire wear or complicated electronics. A bargain is credible only when the vehicle’s total cost fits your budget after inspection and ownership estimates.

How to decide which size and layout you actually need

Compact: GLC, X3 and RDX

These are easiest to maneuver and generally need less space than three-row SUVs. Check rear-seat legroom and cargo capacity with your own passengers, child seats or equipment; a compact badge does not guarantee low fuel or repair costs.

Midsize two-row: GLE and RX 350

They offer more room and highway comfort without committing to a permanent third row. Confirm whether the listing has the engine, all-wheel drive and features you want, because equipment varies significantly by year and trim.

Three-row and large: MDX, Q7, GX 460, XC90 and QX80

Use the third row regularly before paying for it. Measure the space behind the raised seats, test access to the back row and calculate fuel and tire costs. The QX80 is physically much larger than the MDX or XC90; a low asking price does not make it a compact-family vehicle.

A disciplined process for finding a real bargain

  1. Set an all-in ceiling. Start with a purchase target such as $45,000, then reserve cash for tax, registration, inspection, immediate maintenance and an emergency repair fund.
  2. Search comparable examples. Filter by the same model year or generation, trim, drivetrain and mileage. Record several local asking prices rather than relying on a national headline.
  3. Decode the vehicle identification number. Confirm title branding, odometer consistency, ownership history, open recalls and the factory configuration. Verify any recall information with the manufacturer or an official government database.
  4. Demand maintenance evidence. Look for dated invoices and scheduled services, not just a seller’s statement that the SUV was “well maintained.”
  5. Arrange an independent inspection. Use a qualified technician familiar with the brand. Ask for a written report covering leaks, cooling, suspension, brakes, tires, electronics, diagnostic codes and evidence of collision or flood damage.
  6. Use a code reader only as preliminary screening. An OBD-II scanner may reveal stored or pending faults, but compatibility and module access vary; it cannot replace the inspection or prove a clean vehicle.
  7. Price the ownership case. Obtain insurance quotes, estimate fuel from your annual mileage, and ask local specialists for maintenance schedules and likely wear items. No single depreciation percentage answers those questions.
  8. Walk away when the evidence is incomplete. An unusually cheap SUV with missing records, a branded title, unresolved warning lights or no nearby specialist can be more expensive than a higher-priced, documented example.

Are used luxury SUVs expensive to maintain?

They can be. The research supporting this shortlist does not provide a reliable, model-by-model repair-cost table, and costs vary by year, engine, mileage, region and shop. Luxury SUVs often have more sensors, turbochargers, adaptive suspension, four-wheel-drive hardware and electronic convenience systems than mainstream vehicles. Before purchase, obtain a service schedule and two or three local estimates for routine work and likely wear items on the exact vehicle.

What high depreciation should—and should not—tell you

  • It can create an entry-price opportunity: a five-year-old SUV may deliver features that would require a much larger new-car budget.
  • It is not a reliability guarantee: depreciation rankings and reliability evidence answer different questions.
  • It may signal ownership risk: weak demand, expensive repairs, high fuel use or costly insurance can all pressure resale values.
  • It does not predict your resale price: mileage, condition, accident history, region and market conditions determine the value of your individual SUV.

Which candidate is the best value?

There is no universal winner. Choose the GLC, X3 or RDX when footprint and two-row practicality matter; the GLE or RX 350 when you want midsize comfort without a third row; the MDX, Q7 or XC90 when passenger capacity is central; and the GX 460 or QX80 only when their size, capability and operating costs match your use. Within any category, a well-documented, inspected vehicle at a fair local price is a better bargain than the cheapest neglected example.

The Bottom Line

Use $45,000 as a search ceiling, not proof of affordability. Compare like-for-like vehicles, verify the VIN and records, and pay for an independent inspection before treating depreciation as a bargain.
