The North Face Horizon Breeze Brimmer is the best all-around packable sun hat in Travel + Leisure’s 2026 test, while the right choice for you depends on how much coverage, ventilation and crush resistance you need. For the broadest coverage, consider Solbari’s Linen Hat; for rough packing, Tilley’s LTM6 Airflo; and for a lightweight technical option, Outdoor Research’s Sunbriolet.

Travel + Leisure updated its guide on June 2, 2026, after testing 23 hats for fit, sun protection, breathability, packability and quality. Testers wore each for several hours on at least two occasions and packed hats in backpacks, totes and suitcases by rolling, folding or flattening them. The publication says it updates recommendations after at least six months of testing. Read its testing guide.

How to choose a packable sun hat

Start with the coverage you need, then weigh packability against ventilation and fit. UPF describes fabric protection, not how much of your face or neck the hat covers; brim shape and a neck cape matter too. OutdoorGearLab’s 2026 guide says UPF 50 blocks 98.0% of UV rays, compared with 97.5% for UPF 40. Those figures are not a substitute for checking coverage at the sides, back of the neck and scalp. See OutdoorGearLab’s test and methodology.

  • For broad coverage: Look for a wide brim, a down-sloping profile or a neck cape. A very wide brim can obstruct peripheral vision.
  • For a suitcase: Check whether the maker or tester recommends rolling, folding or flattening the hat. A crushable build is useful if it must tolerate rough packing; a structured brim may need care to retain its shape.
  • For heat and activity: Vents, mesh, quick-drying fabric and an absorbent or cooling sweatband help manage heat and perspiration.
  • For wind: An adjustable chin cord or crown cinch helps keep a hat secure. A removable cord is convenient when you do not need it.

The 11 best packable sun hats

Hat Best for Protection and useful features Packability or trade-off
The North Face Horizon Breeze Brimmer Best overall UPF 40; 3.1-inch brim; recycled polyester, nylon and elastane; hidden vents, absorbent sweatband and adjustable chin strap. Travel + Leisure says it takes little luggage space; roll or pack flat to help preserve the brim. The strap is thin.
Solbari Linen Hat Best wide brim UPF 50-plus; 5-inch front brim and 6-inch back brim; linen and cotton; removable chin strap and ponytail opening. Broad neck coverage, but its brim can obstruct vision.
Jenni Kayne Crochet Raffia Sun Hat Best raffia Travel + Leisure category winner; detailed protection and dimensions not stated in the guide summary. Check current product specifications and retailer availability before buying; packing guidance is not stated in the guide summary.
Coolibar Women’s Marina Sun Hat Best bucket hat Travel + Leisure category winner; detailed protection and dimensions not stated in the guide summary. Retailer information is included in the review; packing guidance is not stated in the guide summary.
Tilley LTM6 Airflo Best crushable UPF 50; 3.25-inch brim; water-resistant nylon and foam; floatable construction; ten head sizes. Designed for durable, rough packing, but less breathable than the other technical options described here.
Outdoor Research Sunbriolet Best breathable UPF 50-plus; 4.1-inch brim; nylon and mesh; cooling lining; adjustable crown cinch; removable chin strap; water resistance. Technical styling may not suit those looking for a dressier travel hat.
Sunday Afternoons Sunset Hat Best cowboy hat Travel + Leisure category winner; detailed protection and dimensions not stated in the guide summary. Retailer-linked in the review; packing guidance is not stated in the guide summary.
Columbia Booney Hat Best lightweight Travel + Leisure category winner; detailed protection and dimensions not stated in the guide summary. Retailer-linked in the review; packing guidance is not stated in the guide summary.
Patagonia Wavefarer Hat Best design Travel + Leisure category winner; detailed protection and dimensions not stated in the guide summary. Review links to the brand; packing guidance is not stated in the guide summary.
Eric Javits Hampton Straw Sun Hat Best straw Travel + Leisure category winner; detailed protection and dimensions not stated in the guide summary. Review links to Nordstrom; packing guidance is not stated in the guide summary.
Outdoor Research Sun Bucket Hat Technical alternative Official page lists UPF 50+, bluesign-approved 100% nylon, 80 g weight, 2.5-inch brim, quick-drying and water-resistant fabric, crown cinch, detachable chin cord and interior stow pocket. The page describes a 2026 updated design. At the time the official page was accessed, it showed $48 and out of stock; price and availability can change.

Best overall: The North Face Horizon Breeze Brimmer

This is the most balanced pick for travel when you want a technical hat without a bulky silhouette. Its hidden vents, absorbent sweatband and adjustable chin strap address common comfort and fit needs, and Travel + Leisure says it packs into luggage with little impact on space. Its UPF 40 rating is lower than the UPF 50 options in this roundup, and the thin strap may be less substantial than some travelers prefer. Roll it or pack it flat rather than forcing a sharp fold into the brim. Travel + Leisure’s review.

#1 Best Overall
FURTALK Womens Beach Sun Straw Hat Wide Brim UV Protection Travel Hat
  • Maximum UV Protection for Summer Trips: Engineered with a wide brim and UV Protection, this women's sun hat blocks UVA/UVB rays. Essential for beach vacations or gardening, preventing facial sunburn and premature aging.
  • Packable & Cruise Travel Essential: Say goodbye to bulky headwear. Our foldable straw hat easily fold to fit into your suitcase or beach tote without losing its shape. The perfect space-saving accessory for resorts and honeymoons.
  • Windproof Lanyard for Outdoors: Never lose your hat to a sudden breeze. Featuring an adjustable and detachable chin strap, this beach hat stays securely on your head during windy boat rides, pool days, or coastal walks.
  • Breathable Straw & Cooling Sweatband: Woven from premium paper straw for optimal airflow in humid heat. The built-in moisture-wicking sweatband keeps your head cool and stops sweat from ruining your makeup or dripping into your eyes.
  • Custom Fit for All Head Sizes: Available in two sizes: M/L (21.6""-22.4"") for normal fits, and L/XL (22.4""-23.2"") for larger heads. The hidden inner hook-and-loop closure allows micro-adjustments for all-day comfort.

Best for coverage: Solbari Linen Hat

Choose the Solbari if rear-neck coverage is a priority: its back brim is wider than its front brim, and its ponytail opening can make it easier to wear with long hair. The removable chin strap adds flexibility. The trade-off is the same feature that provides coverage: the broad brim can get in the way of vision, so it may be less convenient for busy walks or activities where you need an unobstructed view. Travel + Leisure lists it at UPF 50-plus. Travel + Leisure’s review.

Best for rough packing: Tilley LTM6 Airflo

The LTM6 Airflo is the practical choice if a hat will be stuffed into luggage or exposed to demanding outdoor use. Its water-resistant nylon-and-foam construction is described as crushable and floatable, and ten head sizes give shoppers more sizing options than a one-size-fits-most design. It has a 3.25-inch brim and UPF 50 protection. Its stated drawback is lower breathability, making it a less obvious pick for very hot, humid conditions. Travel + Leisure’s review.

  • Foldable & Travel Ready:Foldable and packable for easy storage in your bag or suitcase. Perfect for gardening, beach trips, vacations, poolside lounging, camping, picnics and other outdoor activities.

Best for ventilation: Outdoor Research Sunbriolet

For active days when airflow matters, the Sunbriolet combines nylon and mesh with a cooling lining, water resistance and UPF 50-plus protection. The 4.1-inch brim is wider than the Horizon Breeze Brimmer’s, while the crown cinch and removable chin strap help with fit and wind. Its technical look is a style consideration for city wear. Travel + Leisure’s review.

Other category winners in Travel + Leisure’s test

The remaining picks cover specific styles and preferences: Jenni Kayne’s Crochet Raffia Sun Hat for raffia, Coolibar’s Women’s Marina for a bucket shape, Sunday Afternoons’ Sunset Hat for a cowboy silhouette, Columbia’s Booney Hat for light weight, Patagonia’s Wavefarer for design, and Eric Javits’ Hampton for straw. The available guide summary identifies these category winners but does not provide their technical specifications or packing instructions, so check the linked review and current product listing for those details rather than assuming a particular UPF rating or folding method. A technical alternative: Outdoor Research Sun Bucket Hat

The Sun Bucket is a current technical option if you prefer a straightforward bucket profile and compact features. Outdoor Research lists UPF 50+, an 80 g weight, a 2.5-inch brim, quick-drying water-resistant nylon, a crown cinch, detachable chin cord and an interior stow pocket. Its product page calls the design updated for 2026. The page showed a $48 price and out-of-stock status when accessed, so treat both as time-sensitive rather than guaranteed. Check Outdoor Research’s product page.

How to pack a sun hat without damaging it

  1. Check the hat’s specific packing guidance. Travel + Leisure’s testing includes rolling, folding and flattening, but not every construction should be treated the same way.
  2. Use the recommended method. For the Horizon Breeze Brimmer, the guide recommends rolling or packing flat to preserve its brim. The LTM6 Airflo is the pick identified as crushable for rough packing.
  3. Protect structured areas. Avoid forcing a hard crease into a brim or crown when the maker’s guidance does not call for it. Pack clothes around a less flexible crown to limit pressure.
  4. Restore shape gently. Once unpacked, shake out a hat or ease it back into shape rather than sharply bending the brim. Travel + Leisure frames a good packable hat as one that can be packed and shaken out without being completely bent out of shape. See the publication’s packability guidance.

What OutdoorGearLab’s separate test adds

OutdoorGearLab tested 21 sun hats using real-world adventures and UV tests. Its overall leader is the Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure, which is not one of the 11 Travel + Leisure category winners above. OutdoorGearLab gives it an 83 overall score and lists UPF 50+, a 3.5-inch front brim, 3-inch side brim and 6.25-inch neck cape. Its extended coverage may suit hiking better than a compact everyday hat, but the guide’s quoted tester specifically praised it on alpine hikes, not as a suitcase-first option.
