Tesla’s 2025 Revenue and Profits Fell Amid Political Backlash—but 2026 Results Rebounded

Tesla’s 2025 revenue declined and net income fell 46%. Political backlash was reported as part of the sales context, but the company did not quantify its effect; 2026 revenue and deliveries later rebounded.

Tesla’s financial downturn was sharpest in 2025: annual revenue slipped 3% to $94.827 billion, while net income attributable to common stockholders fell 46% to $3.794 billion. Reporting linked some sales weakness to backlash over CEO Elon Musk’s political activity, but Tesla’s filings do not measure how much politics contributed. By the second quarter of 2026, revenue and deliveries had risen year over year; quarterly net income was still slightly lower.

How much did Tesla’s revenue and profits fall in 2025?

Tesla’s fiscal-year figures show a modest decline in revenue alongside a much larger drop in net income attributable to common stockholders. These are distinct measures: net income is not operating income, adjusted earnings, or free cash flow.

Measure FY2023 FY2024 FY2025
Total revenue $96.773 billion $97.690 billion $94.827 billion
Net income attributable to common stockholders $14.997 billion $7.091 billion $3.794 billion

On the matching annual comparisons, 2025 revenue was down about 3% from 2024, and net income was down about 46%. Tesla reported these figures in its FY2025 Form 10-K; the Associated Press also characterized the profit decline as 46%.

Which parts of Tesla’s business weakened or grew?

The revenue decline was concentrated in automotive sales. Tesla’s energy and services businesses grew, so the annual result was not a uniform contraction across every segment.

Energy generation and storage sales $9.564 billion $12.270 billion Up $2.706 billion
Services and other $10.534 billion $12.530 billion Up $1.996 billion

Tesla’s Form 10-K also reported research and development expense of $6.411 billion in 2025, up 41% from 2024. The company said the increase primarily reflected higher AI and other program costs and stock-based compensation. Higher expenses can help explain why revenue and earnings move differently, but this expense figure alone does not explain the entire net-income decline.

What role did Musk’s politics play?

Associated Press reporting described boycotts and customer reaction to Musk’s political activity as part of the context for Tesla’s 2025 sales trouble. In July 2025, AP reported that second-quarter revenue was down 12% year over year and profit was down 16%; it also quoted Forrester analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee on the effect on the brand’s perception. That is an analyst’s assessment, not a finding in Tesla’s filings.

AP’s January 2026 coverage connected boycotts and sales weakness with Musk’s political activity and noted that Tesla had lost its position as the world’s largest electric-vehicle maker to China’s BYD. Other factors also mattered: AP’s July 2026 delivery coverage cited the loss of the U.S. EV tax credit and an outside estimate that U.S. Tesla sales remained down. Tesla does not separately identify or quantify the effect of political backlash in its reported results, so no precise share of the revenue or profit decline can be assigned to it.

What changed in the first half of 2026?

The latest results covered here show a year-over-year revenue rebound, but not a matching increase in quarterly net income. Tesla’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q reported:

Measure Q2 2025 Q2 2026 Six months ended June 30, 2025 Six months ended June 30, 2026
Total revenue $22.50 billion $28.24 billion $41.83 billion $50.62 billion
Net income attributable to common stockholders $1.172 billion $1.114 billion $1.581 billion $1.591 billion

For Q2, revenue rose $5.74 billion year over year while net income fell $58 million. Across the first half, revenue and net income were both slightly higher year over year. The filing said Q2 automotive sales revenue increased 24%, services and other revenue increased 50%, and energy generation and storage revenue increased 13%. Research and development expense was $2.371 billion for the quarter, up 49% from Q2 2025.

Cash from operating activities in the first half rose to $8.63 billion from $4.70 billion a year earlier, while capital expenditure increased to $8.28 billion from $3.89 billion. Tesla said it expected 2026 capital expenditures to exceed $25 billion, in part for AI computing and data centers, manufacturing and research-and-development expansion, and its service and charging footprint. That is a company forecast, not spending already recorded for the full year.

Do higher deliveries mean Tesla has recovered?

AP reported Tesla’s Q2 2026 vehicle deliveries were up 25% year over year. That is evidence of higher delivery volume, not proof that margins or earnings have recovered: Q2 net income attributable to common stockholders was still lower than a year earlier. AP also cited Cox Automotive’s estimate that U.S. Tesla sales declined 20% in Q2 2026. That is a third-party estimate, not a Tesla-reported U.S. sales figure.

To judge a recovery, compare the same periods across more than one measure: revenue, net income, deliveries, margins, and capital spending. The available Q2 and first-half figures show revenue growth and higher deliveries, but quarterly net income remained slightly down and planned investment was substantial.
