It is a GM brand, not a separately owned automaker. Cadillac vehicles are assembled in several U.S. plants in Michigan, Tennessee and Texas, while GM’s SAIC General Motors joint venture also produces Cadillac vehicles in China. The exact factory depends on the model, model year and market.
Who owns Cadillac?
General Motors Company owns the Cadillac brand. GM’s 2025 annual report lists Cadillac among the brands through which GM develops, manufactures and markets vehicles for the global luxury market.
It is more accurate to say that GM owns Cadillac than to attribute ownership to a particular individual. GM is a publicly held company, so its shareholders own the corporation; Cadillac is one of GM’s automotive brands.
What the China joint venture means
GM reported a 50% direct interest in SAIC General Motors Corp., Ltd. as of December 31, 2025. That joint venture and related China operations produce, import and sell vehicles under the Cadillac name. The 50% figure describes GM’s interest in the joint venture, not a 50% ownership share of the Cadillac brand.

A final-assembly location identifies where the vehicle was put together, not where every component originated. GM expressly describes its U.S.-assembled Cadillac vehicles as using both U.S. and globally sourced parts. Engines, batteries, electronics, castings, software and other components may come from different plants or countries.

Consequently, a Cadillac assembled in Michigan, Tennessee or Texas is not necessarily made entirely from U.S. content, and a Cadillac assembled in China is not necessarily composed exclusively of Chinese parts.
Quick Recap
How to determine where a specific Cadillac was built
- Identify the exact model and model year. Factory assignments can change when GM retools a plant or adds production.
- Identify the market. A vehicle sold in North America may have a different production path from one built for China or another market.
- Check the vehicle’s final-assembly information. The vehicle label, window sticker and documentation for the individual vehicle are more useful than a general model description.
- Use the current GM plant information as a cross-check. Treat the July 2026 U.S. list as time-specific and do not assume it covers every global facility.
