Microsoft’s installation files could be downloaded without payment, but activation still required a valid digital license or product key. Many computers already included one, so their owners did not need to buy Windows again.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That makes these figures historical prices, and Windows 11 was generally the better new purchase for compatible hardware.
Windows 10 license prices in the United States in 2024
| License or purchase | 2024 U.S. reference price | What it covered |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 Home | $139 | Full consumer license |
| Windows 10 Pro | $199.99 | Full consumer license |
| Home-to-Pro upgrade | About $99 | Edition upgrade for an already activated Home installation |
The $139 and $199.99 figures were long-standing Microsoft U.S. list-price references cited during 2024, rather than a guarantee that every retailer or Microsoft storefront displayed exactly those amounts on every date. Taxes, promotions, physical packaging, retailer markups and regional pricing could change the checkout total. Contemporary references include Microsoft Community’s August 2024 answer and Microsoft Q&A material for Pro pricing.
The roughly $99 Pro Pack figure was a historical upgrade reference, not the price of a complete Windows license. It assumed that Windows 10 Home was already properly licensed and activated.

Is Windows 10 free?
Windows 10 installation media was free to download from Microsoft’s official download page. That is different from owning activation rights. Microsoft requires either a digital license or a 25-character product key to activate Windows, as explained in its activation documentation.
You can install Windows and select “I don’t have a product key” when appropriate, then activate later. An unactivated installation is not the same as a fully licensed copy, however. Do not use unauthorized activators or modified installation images.

Home or Pro: which edition justified the price?
Windows 10 Home
Home was normally sufficient for household web browsing, office work, media, gaming and everyday desktop use. Its 2024 U.S. reference price was $139.
Windows 10 Pro
Pro cost $199.99 and was intended for users who specifically needed capabilities such as business-management controls, domain joining, BitLocker management or Hyper-V virtualization. Paying for Pro solely because it sounds more complete was unnecessary for most home users. A Pro key must match a Pro installation; a Home key does not activate Pro.

Home-to-Pro upgrade
The approximately $99 upgrade applied to an already activated Home installation. It changed the edition; it did not create a full license for an otherwise unlicensed computer. Store availability and pricing could vary by device, account, edition and date.
Check whether your PC already has a license
- Prebuilt or refurbished PC: Windows was commonly included in the purchase price. Look for activation in Settings, an embedded OEM entitlement, or documentation supplied by the seller.
- Reinstallation on the same computer: If the device has a digital license, reinstall the same edition, choose “I don’t have a product key” during setup, connect to the internet and sign in with the associated Microsoft account. Microsoft says the matching edition can reactivate without another purchase.
- Previous Windows upgrade: An eligible existing Windows license may provide a digital entitlement, but the edition still has to match.
Microsoft distinguishes digital licenses from product keys. A digital license is associated with a device and may be linked to a Microsoft account; a product key is the familiar 25-character code. A PC may also contain an embedded OEM key.

How to activate Windows 10
Buy a license after installation
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Go to Store and follow Microsoft’s purchase process.
Enter an existing product key
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Change product key and enter the 25-character code. Microsoft documents this process at its product-key installation page.
Reactivate after a motherboard change
- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the digital license.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation and choose Troubleshoot.
- Select I changed hardware on this device recently, choose the affected device and attempt reactivation.
Microsoft documents this path at Reactivate Windows after a hardware change. Success is not guaranteed: license type, account linkage, edition, and the extent of the hardware replacement matter.
Retail, OEM and digital licenses
| Type | Typical source | Transfer and support considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Retail | Microsoft or an authorized retailer | Generally the better choice when moving to a replacement PC, subject to Microsoft’s terms and removal from the old computer. |
| OEM | Preinstalled on a PC or supplied for system-builder use | Generally associated with the original licensed device and may have different support arrangements. |
| Digital license | Upgrade, Microsoft Store purchase or bundled entitlement | An activation mechanism associated with a device; linking an account helps reactivation but does not change the underlying license terms. |
Microsoft’s licensing references describe these distinctions in Windows 10 licensing guidance and the OEM use terms. An inexpensive OEM listing is not automatically equivalent to a transferable retail license.

Why $5–$20 marketplace keys deserve caution
A key that activates Windows may still fail to provide the rights you think you purchased. It could be tied to an OEM device, drawn from a volume-license program, obtained through an education or regional offer, or sold without a legitimate license chain. It might activate initially and later be blocked.
- Ask what licensing channel the seller is providing.
- Confirm whether transfer to another computer is permitted.
- Keep an invoice and proof of purchase.
- Be wary of listings that promise only “activation” and say nothing about licensing rights.
Activation success alone does not prove that the key is legitimate, transferable or suitable for business use. Refurbished-PC buyers should confirm who supplies the license and whether genuine documentation is included.
Was buying Windows 10 worthwhile in 2024?
For an older computer that could not run Windows 11, Windows 10 could still have been a practical compatibility choice. It also made sense when a particular application or peripheral required Windows 10. For a new, Windows 11-compatible PC, spending $139 or $199.99 on Windows 10 offered limited long-term value because Microsoft had already set October 14, 2025 as the end of support. As of 2026, that date has passed.
Before buying, check whether the computer meets Windows 11 requirements. A Windows 10 license has historically activated the corresponding Windows 11 edition in eligible situations, but edition matching, hardware eligibility and the applicable license terms still matter; a Home key does not grant Pro.
Lower-cost alternatives
- Use the computer’s existing digital license instead of buying another copy.
- Buy a new or reputable refurbished PC with Windows included.
- Install Windows without entering a key and activate later if you already own the rights.
- Consider Ubuntu, Fedora Workstation or Linux Mint if your applications, drivers, peripherals and games are compatible.
- Choose Windows 11 for compatible new hardware rather than purchasing an unsupported Windows 10 installation.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 2024 U.S. reference prices were $139 for Windows 10 Home, $199.99 for Pro and about $99 for a Home-to-Pro upgrade. Installation media was free, and many PCs already carried a license. For a new purchase today, use Windows 11 where the hardware supports it; treat ultra-cheap Windows keys as a licensing-risk decision, not a guaranteed bargain.
