What Is XRP? How It Differs From Ripple and How to Buy It

XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger, not the same thing as Ripple. Learn how buying works, compare exchange custody with self-custody, and understand legal and supply context.

XRP is a digital asset; Ripple is a private technology company; and the XRP Ledger (XRPL) is the blockchain on which XRP is native. You can generally buy XRP through a supported exchange or gateway, but availability, fees and legal requirements vary by country and provider. Before buying, understand how the asset works, how you will store it, and the possibility of losing money.

What are XRP, Ripple and the XRP Ledger?

These names are related, but they do not mean the same thing:

  • XRP is the digital asset native to the XRP Ledger. It can be used to pay ledger transaction costs and as an asset for transactions on the network.
  • The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is an open-source, decentralized blockchain that records transactions and supports functions such as a native decentralized exchange.
  • Ripple is a privately owned technology company. It uses XRP and XRPL in some enterprise products, but it is not the token or the ledger.

Ripple’s official FAQ compares XRP’s role on XRPL to ETH on Ethereum or BTC on Bitcoin. The XRP Ledger Foundation’s technical documentation describes XRPL as a decentralized blockchain with its own digital currency for processing and recording financial transactions.

What is XRP used for?

On XRPL, XRP can pay transaction costs, help deter spam by making transactions costly to submit, and serve as a bridge asset on the ledger’s native decentralized exchange. Ripple also markets XRPL for payment and tokenization applications. Those are network functions and company product claims; they do not establish that XRP will rise in value or produce a return for an investor.

How fast are XRP Ledger transactions?

XRPL documentation says its consensus process takes approximately 4–6 seconds. Ripple describes XRP-based cross-border settlement as occurring in 3+ seconds. These are different descriptions: consensus timing is not a guarantee of the time for an entire payment, which may involve other services or steps. Neither figure says anything about XRP’s price performance.

How to buy XRP

There is no single exchange, payment method or fee that applies everywhere. Check local availability and provider terms before opening an account or sending funds.

  1. Check access in your country. Confirm that XRP trading and withdrawals are offered where you live and that the provider is legally usable there. Buying access and the ability to withdraw to your own wallet may differ.
  2. Choose a provider and open an account. Use an exchange or other supported gateway, review its terms and security practices, and complete any identity checks it requires.
  3. Fund the account. Use a deposit method the provider supports in your region. Check deposit costs, processing times and any minimums before transferring money.
  4. Review the XRP market and order details. Select the XRP trading pair, then check the quoted spread and trading fees. A market order prioritizes execution at available prices; a limit order sets the price at which you are willing to buy, but may not fill.
  5. Decide where the XRP will be held. You can leave it with the provider or withdraw it to a compatible wallet. If withdrawing, verify the receiving address and network details. A centralized exchange may require a destination tag or memo to credit the transfer to your account; follow the receiving provider’s instructions.
  6. If withdrawing, test carefully. Confirm that the wallet supports XRP and the intended transfer, and consider sending a small test amount first. A mistaken address or omitted required tag can delay or prevent correct crediting.

Should you keep XRP on an exchange or use self-custody?

With custodial storage, a provider controls the private keys associated with the XRP and handles account access. With self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for keeping them safe and being able to recover access. Neither option removes all risk.

Consideration Exchange custody Self-custody
Control of private keys The provider controls the keys; you access your balance through its account system. You control the keys through your wallet and are responsible for protecting them.
Recovery responsibility Account recovery depends on the provider’s procedures and continued service. You must preserve the recovery phrase or other recovery method. Losing it can mean losing access.
Withdrawals Withdrawals depend on the provider’s availability, rules and any applicable restrictions. You initiate transfers yourself and must enter the correct address and any required destination tag.
Fees Trading and withdrawal fees depend on the provider and may change. Wallet and network costs may apply; the wallet provider’s terms and the transaction itself determine the costs.
Convenience May be simpler for trading and account access, subject to the provider’s services. Offers direct control but requires managing wallet setup, keys and transfers.
Security exposure You rely on the provider’s account safeguards and remain exposed to provider or account-access problems. You avoid giving a custodian control of the keys but take on device failure, recovery and phishing risks.
Access and regulation Access can depend on the provider’s jurisdiction, policies and regulatory obligations. Self-custody does not make buying, selling or using a provider available in every jurisdiction.

A hardware wallet keeps private keys offline, but it cannot prevent every loss. It does not remove XRP’s market risk, phishing risk, the chance of entering an incorrect address, or the risks of any exchange or other counterparty used to buy or sell. Store a recovery phrase offline and never share it with anyone.

Is XRP a security?

The answer depends on what is being assessed and the applicable jurisdiction. In the United States, the SEC filed its case against Ripple in December 2020. Ripple’s FAQ describes Judge Analisa Torres’s July 13, 2023 ruling as finding that XRP in and of itself is not a security. A 2025 Federal Register notice records court language that XRP as a digital token is not itself an investment contract.

A ruling about the token itself does not mean every sale, product or transaction is treated identically, nor does it resolve the law in every country. Check current local legal and tax information for your circumstances rather than treating the U.S. ruling as a universal answer.

How much XRP exists, and what do supply figures mean?

The XRP Ledger’s code generated 100 billion XRP, according to the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s 2025 Federal Register notice. The same notice records that founders retained 20 billion XRP and nearly 80 billion were provided to Ripple Labs. These are historical allocation figures; they are not a current breakdown of who owns every XRP.

Ripple reported the following figures as of June 30, 2026. They are dated company-reported balances, not permanent supply figures:

Ripple-reported measure Amount as of June 30, 2026
Total XRP held by Ripple 37,656,053,914
Total distributed 62,329,587,596
Total placed in escrow 32,600,000,000

These are distinct reported measures. Do not add them together as though they were mutually exclusive parts of one total. The figures describe the date shown and can change.

Is XRP a good investment?

Whether XRP suits you depends on your finances, risk tolerance and reasons for buying. XRPL’s transaction features and settlement timing do not establish future demand, price gains or profit. Consider whether you can afford a loss, how you would handle price movements, and what fees and storage risks apply before committing money. Avoid relying on a network’s speed or a company’s product claims as a prediction of investment performance.
