What “Courtesy Credit Balance” means
Amazon uses overlapping labels such as courtesy credit, promotional credit, promotional certificate and digital credit. The exact wording and location can vary by account, marketplace, promotion, app version and the message that issued the credit. In practical terms, this is a restricted allowance that reduces the price of qualifying Amazon purchases. It is generally not withdrawable, transferable to another account or redeemable for gift cards. It may also be excluded from taxes, shipping, gift-wrap charges, Prime fees, subscriptions or other fees unless the offer specifically says otherwise. How to check whether you have one
- Sign in to the Amazon marketplace and account that received the message or support promise.
- Open Your Payments and look for a promotional-balance or related credit entry.
- If no balance is shown, open the original email, promotion page or customer-service transcript and review its amount, deadline, claim code and product restrictions.
- Add a qualifying product to your cart, choose Proceed to checkout, and inspect the final Order Summary without submitting the order.
Amazon forum staff specifically directs customers to Your Payments and says some promotional amounts appear only as an automatic deduction at checkout. There may be no permanent menu labeled “Courtesy Credit Balance,” and desktop and mobile interfaces can differ.

How to use the credit safely
- Choose an item that meets the offer’s product, category, marketplace, seller, fulfillment and minimum-spend rules.
- When the terms require it, select an item clearly marked Sold by Amazon.com and Shipped by Amazon. Prime eligibility alone does not establish that both conditions are met.
- Use the cart and normal checkout flow. Amazon’s guidance says Buy Now may not work for a promotional claim code.
- Review the final order total and confirm that the courtesy or promotional credit appears as a deduction.
- Pay any remaining balance with another eligible payment method.
- Do not place the order if the deduction is missing; Amazon may not add it afterward.
The credit may reduce the eligible portion of an order up to its available amount, but taxes, shipping, gift cards, memberships, fees, excluded products and third-party offers may not qualify. Credits may be one-time use and may not stack.
How people legitimately receive a courtesy credit
Customer-service goodwill
You can ask Amazon Customer Service to review a genuine problem, such as a delayed, missing, damaged or incorrectly delivered order, a cancellation or seller-fulfillment failure, a replacement issue, or another service breakdown. Amazon decides whether to issue a credit, and the amount is discretionary. A support agent’s statement should be preserved in the chat transcript or email, but a request is not a guarantee. Do not exaggerate or fabricate a problem.

Offer-based promotional credit
Some credits are awarded only after an offer’s conditions are met. Those conditions can include a specified product or category, minimum spend, payment method, shipping choice, completion deadline, or keeping the qualifying order from being canceled or returned. Follow the particular offer rather than generalized advice from older pages or social media.
What happens after cancellation, return or refund?
Amazon’s customer-service guidance distinguishes these outcomes. A canceled order using a promotional code or courtesy credit may cause the credit to return for another order. A returned item refunded after purchase may not make the credit reusable. The promotion’s terms and Amazon’s refund handling control, so never assume a returned credit will come back.

Does unused credit expire?
Often it does, but there is no universal expiration period for all Amazon shopping credits. Check the date in the original email, promotion terms, account page or checkout. Use the earliest explicit deadline tied to that particular offer. Amazon Ads promotions have their own award, start, end and status rules—for example, active, expired or spent—as shown in its offer terms; those rules do not automatically apply to shopping courtesy credits.
Why the credit is missing: symptoms and fixes

What to do when normal checks fail
- Reopen the issuing email, promotion page or support transcript.
- Record the amount, expiration date, qualifying item or seller, claim code and promised issue date.
- Test a product sold and shipped by Amazon.com through the cart checkout.
- Confirm the deduction on the final order summary before ordering.
- If it is still absent, contact Customer Service through the related order or account.
- Give the agent the case number, email subject, promise date and any screenshot, and ask whether the credit was issued, expired, consumed, restricted or affected by a cancellation or return.
Customer Service can verify the credit’s status, but cannot guarantee a goodwill credit or override every promotion’s restrictions.

- Courtesy credit is less flexible than gift-card money and normally cannot be cashed out or transferred.
- Eligibility can depend on seller, fulfillment method, product, marketplace, minimum spend and payment method.
