Cash App’s official U.S. terms say a sponsor can withdraw authorization by contacting Cash App Support in the app or by calling 1-800-969-1940. A teen may not have a self-service “Remove sponsor” button. If you are 18 or older, ask Support about account graduation and identity verification rather than assuming the relationship ends automatically.
This article concerns Cash App Families Sponsored Accounts, not referral codes, promotional sponsors, or business relationships.
What “sponsor” means on Cash App
Cash App Families lets an eligible parent or guardian authorize a minor’s Sponsored Account. Cash App’s teen information describes these accounts as generally available to ages 13–17, subject to eligibility and approval. The sponsor generally must be at least 15 years older than the sponsored person and, for a teen, be the biological or adoptive parent or an eligible guardian. See Cash App’s teen account information and the U.S. Terms of Service.
The sponsor is the legal owner of a teen Sponsored Account and accepts responsibility for its use, transactions, fees, and related liabilities. The teen can use the account and may withdraw funds, but access to features is subject to Cash App’s rules. Sponsors may be able to view balances, statements, and real-time transactions.

Child accounts have different termination and fund rules, and the current Terms say the feature is unavailable to New York residents. Identify which type of account you have before taking action.

How the sponsor ends authorization
- Open Cash App and sign in to the sponsoring account.
- Tap Profile.
- Open Support or Cash App Support.
- Start a support conversation and write:
I want to withdraw my authorization as sponsor for this Sponsored Account.
- Provide account, relationship, age, or identity information Support may request.
- Ask Support to confirm that sponsorship ended, whether the teen’s account remains open, what happens to the balance and Card, and whether another sponsor can be added.
Cash App’s Terms do not establish one universal “Family → Sponsored Accounts → End Sponsorship” menu path. Labels can vary by app version, account type, age, and location. The official alternative is 1-800-969-1940, the number listed in the current Terms. You can also use Cash App’s official Help site.
What a teen can do
The Terms describe the sponsor’s right to withdraw authorization but do not confirm a teen-controlled removal tool. Ask the sponsor to contact Support. If that is impossible, contact Support from the sponsored account, explain that you need the Sponsored Account disconnected, and ask what verification or documentation is required.
Do not create a second Cash App account as a workaround. Duplicate accounts can complicate identity checks, balances, payments, and ownership transfer. If you want a new parent or guardian to sponsor you, tell Support that you need to replace the current sponsor; the new person may have to submit a fresh request and satisfy Cash App’s eligibility requirements.

If you have turned 18
Turning 18 does not necessarily unlink the sponsor instantly. Cash App’s Terms say a Sponsored Person must become the sole owner after successfully completing the required graduation process. That can include age and identity verification. If verification is not completed, Cash App may restrict or close the Sponsored Account.
- Contact Support from the existing account.
- Say:
I am 18 or older and need to complete account graduation and become the sole owner of this Sponsored Account.
- Follow the verification instructions and ask whether the current Card, balance, Savings, Bitcoin, and pending transactions will remain available during the process.
What happens to your money, Card, and features?
Teen Sponsored Account balance
When authorization for a teen Sponsored Account is withdrawn or terminated, the Terms say funds remain in the Sponsored Account. That is not an automatic transfer to the sponsor. Some features may be limited, although the teen may still be able to withdraw to a linked account. Ask Support how to preserve or withdraw the balance before confirming the change.
Child account balance
Child-account rules differ: the Terms say that ending authorization may close the account and transfer its funds to the sponsor’s account. Do not apply the teen-account rule to a child account.
Cash App Card
The Cash App Card Agreement says the Sponsored Person’s Card Account and Card may be closed when sponsorship authorization is withdrawn or terminated. The Debit Flex Card Agreement contains a similar provision. Do not assume the existing Card will continue working. Ask whether a replacement or independent Card is available.

Pending charges and recurring payments
Pending payments, refunds, deposits, and withdrawals may still settle after authorization is revoked. The Card Agreement says the sponsor may remain responsible for transactions initiated before revocation even if they post later. Update subscriptions, payroll, direct deposit, and recurring bills if they use the Card or account.

Savings and digital assets
Check Savings, Bitcoin, and any other virtual-currency holdings before changing sponsorship. The Savings Terms say ending a sponsorship may allow Cash App to revoke Savings Yield from one or more Sponsored Accounts owned by that sponsor. Ask Support how each asset will be handled; do not send funds to a person claiming to be Support.

“Remove sponsor” or Family is missing
- Confirm you are signed in to the correct account.
- Check whether you are the sponsor or the teen; available controls differ.
- Ask Support to confirm whether the account is recognized as a current Sponsored Account.
- Consider whether the account is restricted, suspended, under review, or in a location or age category with different rules.
Do not rely on videos or social posts that promise a fixed button. They are not a substitute for Cash App’s current Terms and Support process.
Support sends an automated reply
Choose messaging or chat when available and use precise terms: Sponsored Account, sponsor authorization, withdraw authorization, and, if applicable, account graduation. Ask for a case-specific confirmation rather than a generic help article.
The sponsor is unavailable
If the sponsor cannot participate, contact Support and explain the circumstances. Cash App may request guardianship, identity, death, or other supporting documentation. Never post those documents, account details, PINs, passwords, or sign-in codes publicly.

Safety checks before you proceed
- Use only in-app Support, cash.app/help, or the phone number shown in Cash App’s current official Terms.
- Never pay a “release fee” or send money to unlock an account or remove a sponsor.
- Never share a password, PIN, one-time sign-in code, or full Social Security number with an unofficial contact.
- Save screenshots of your balance, pending activity, Card details, Savings, Bitcoin, and important transaction history.
- Ask Support to confirm the sponsorship status and the effect on your balance and Card in the support conversation.
