How to tell whether a travel discount was genuinely valuable
Compare the final, all-in price for the same itinerary, room, cabin, occupancy and dates. The Associated Press cautioned that an advertised percentage can be based on an inflated reference price. Travel expert Sally French told the AP: “People see ’40 percent off’ and assume it’s a once-in-a-lifetime steal, without recognizing that the underlying price may have been inflated or that the same itinerary was cheaper last month.”
- Check the comparison price against the same supplier’s price for the same dates, then compare the same itinerary with other suppliers. A different room, cabin, route, or travel date is not an apples-to-apples comparison.
- Read the booking deadline and travel window separately. A short booking period may apply to travel months later, and a promotion that includes 2026 travel is not automatically a 2026 offer.
- Look for blackout dates, nonrefundable terms, mandatory taxes and fees, resort fees, double-occupancy rules, and required upgrades or add-ons. Any of these can reduce or erase a headline saving.
- For cruises, identify whether a benefit changes the fare, deposit, guest count, gratuities, or onboard spending balance. Put cash-like price reductions and restricted credits in separate parts of your comparison.
