Re:

Can I Use My US Phone Number in Europe? A Comprehensive Guide

Yes, you can use a US number in Europe—but calls, SMS, 2FA, iMessage and cheap data require different solutions. Compare roaming, dual-SIM eSIM, Wi‑Fi Calling, local plans and Google Voice.

Yes—but keeping your US number, using it for ordinary calls and texts, and getting inexpensive European data are separate issues. You can keep the US line active and roam, pair it with a European data eSIM, use supported Wi‑Fi Calling, or move the number to an internet service such as Google Voice. The right choice depends on trip length, your carrier and phone, whether you need SMS authentication, and how much roaming cost you can accept.

What does “use my US number” mean?

These are different functions, and a setup that handles one may not handle the others:

What you need What must remain available Important limitation
Receive ordinary calls to the US number The US line active through roaming or supported Wi‑Fi Calling Incoming calls may be included, charged by the minute, or covered by a daily pass.
Make calls that show the US number The carrier’s native calling service, supported Wi‑Fi Calling, or a number-based VoIP service Calling a European number can be billed differently from calling the US.
Send and receive SMS or MMS The US line connected through cellular roaming or a carrier-supported Wi‑Fi route Short codes, group texts and picture messages can behave differently.
Receive banking or account-recovery codes Reliable SMS delivery to the US line A data-only eSIM cannot receive SMS sent to your US number.
Use iMessage and FaceTime Internet data and the US number still selected in Apple’s messaging settings Blue-bubble iMessage is not the same as carrier SMS.
Use WhatsApp, Signal or Messenger Wi‑Fi or mobile data These apps do not automatically preserve ordinary carrier calls or SMS.
Use mobile data while retaining US identity A dual-SIM phone with the US line and a second data line The second eSIM supplies connectivity; it does not itself carry your US number.

Your four practical options

1. Keep your US carrier and roam

International roaming lets your US line register on a European partner network. Depending on your plan, talk, text and data may be included, placed in a daily pass, limited to an allowance, or billed pay-per-use. Receiving SMS may be treated differently from receiving calls.

Check your carrier’s destination list, eligible plan, data limits, hotspot rules and prices before departure. AT&T says its International Day Pass covers more than 210 destinations and its travel guidance describes a $6 charge for each additional line on the same account used that day; verify the primary-line price and current terms on the AT&T buying page before relying on any price. AT&T also warns that talk, text and data outside the US can create international charges (usage guidance).

Roaming is the simplest option when you need the native Phone and Messages apps to work normally, but it can be expensive for a long stay or heavy data use. A phone can still connect to a foreign network when you think you are “only using Wi‑Fi”: voicemail retrieval, MMS, background data or an accidental call can trigger charges.

2. Keep the US line and add a European or travel eSIM

For many modern phones, this is the best cost-and-access compromise:

  • US SIM/eSIM remains enabled for your US number, calls, SMS and 2FA.
  • European or regional eSIM becomes the default mobile-data line.
  • Data roaming is off on the US line.
  • Automatic cellular-data switching is off unless you understand the risk.
  • Wi‑Fi Calling stays enabled on the US line if your carrier and device support it.

Travel eSIMs are frequently data-only. Airalo explains that some products include voice and SMS, while many rely on WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal or similar apps (Airalo’s service explanation). A data eSIM does not transfer your US number and does not make ordinary calls to a restaurant or bank by itself.

Your phone must be unlocked and compatible with the eSIM and European networks. US Mobile, for example, requires an eSIM-compatible, carrier-unlocked device and says its line cannot be activated outside the US (US Mobile international guidance).

3. Use carrier Wi‑Fi Calling

Supported Wi‑Fi Calling can route the native Phone and Messages services over hotel, home or travel-eSIM data while preserving the US line. Enable it and complete any emergency-address registration before leaving the US. Keep the US SIM/eSIM enabled.

Wi‑Fi Calling is not automatically free. AT&T requires an eligible Wireless or Prepaid account configured for HD Voice and says billing depends on the number called and where you are calling from (AT&T Wi‑Fi Calling requirements and billing). A call to a US number may be treated differently from a call to a European number. A native dialer can also fall back to cellular routing if Wi‑Fi is weak.

4. Move the number to Google Voice or another VoIP service

Porting separates the number from the mobile carrier, which can suit a long-term expatriate who accepts a permanent change. Google charges $20 to port an eligible mobile number into personal Google Voice. Google says the request must be made while you are in the US, can take up to 48 hours, and text transfer can take up to three business days (Google’s porting instructions).

Do not cancel the old carrier plan until the port completes. Completion cancels the carrier service associated with that number. Some banks and other services reject VoIP numbers, so porting can reduce the reliability of 2FA. Google Voice calling works over Wi‑Fi or mobile data, but the app may fall back to carrier routing when internet calling is unavailable; Google documents the routing behavior and international-charge risk (calling over data, call routing and charges). This is not a last-minute vacation workaround.

Best setup for most short trips

For a one- to four-week trip where you want inexpensive data but still need US SMS, use the US line plus a compatible European data eSIM. A carrier pass is better when you want maximum simplicity and are willing to pay for ordinary cellular service.

Your priority Best fit Main trade-off
One-week holiday, minimal setup US-carrier international pass May cost more than a data eSIM.
Cheap data while receiving US codes US line active plus travel eSIM Wi‑Fi Calling and SMS behavior must be tested.
Mostly app messaging Data-only eSIM No ordinary telephone number or carrier SMS.
Calls to local businesses Local-number SIM/eSIM or carrier roaming More setup and number management.
Several months abroad Local plan, with the US number preserved separately if needed Fair-use and permanent-roaming rules may make roaming unsuitable.
Permanent separation from a mobile carrier Google Voice or another VoIP service 2FA acceptance and native SMS can be less reliable.

Set up and test everything before leaving the US

  1. Check the phone. On iPhone, open Settings → General → About and confirm Carrier Lock says “No SIM restrictions.” On Android, look in the manufacturer’s SIM manager or network settings for carrier-lock status. Confirm dual-SIM/eSIM support and European network compatibility.
  2. Enable Wi‑Fi Calling on the US line. Complete any emergency-address or registration step required by your carrier.
  3. Test on a different Wi‑Fi network. Turn on Airplane Mode, turn Wi‑Fi back on, place a call to a US number, send and receive an SMS, test an MMS or group message, and check voicemail and visual voicemail.
  4. Test authentication. Trigger codes from your bank and other critical services. Add an authenticator app, passkeys, email recovery and printed or securely stored backup codes where available.
  5. Install the travel eSIM. Some plans start validity when installed; others start on first network connection, so read the provider’s rule. Keep the US line labelled clearly.
  6. At arrival, select lines deliberately. Set the travel eSIM as mobile data, turn US-line data roaming off, disable automatic data switching, and keep the US line enabled if calls, SMS or 2FA are required.
  7. Monitor the carrier account. Check roaming alerts and usage after the first connection. If unexpected charges appear, disable the US line temporarily and use Wi‑Fi or the travel eSIM for data while you contact the carrier.

Exact menu names vary by iOS version, Android manufacturer and region. On iPhone, also review Settings → Cellular/Mobile Service for the data line, roaming and default voice line, and Settings → Messages → Send & Receive to confirm the US number remains selected.

How to avoid surprise roaming charges

  • Turn off Data Roaming on the US line; this does not necessarily disable cellular calls or SMS.
  • Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching unless you accept the possibility of US-line data use.
  • Do not assume Airplane Mode alone is a billing guarantee. For the strongest block, use Airplane Mode plus Wi‑Fi, temporarily disable the US line, or ask the carrier to block international roaming.
  • Watch for voicemail retrieval, MMS, background synchronization and accidental outbound calls.
  • Remember that Wi‑Fi does not automatically make calls free. Destination, carrier feature and routing determine billing.

Verizon, T‑Mobile and other carriers change destination lists, allowances and prices. Use their live international pages—Verizon and T‑Mobile—and confirm your exact plan rather than relying on an old price list.

Will calls, texts and 2FA still arrive?

They can, but only while the US line remains active and has a supported route through roaming or Wi‑Fi Calling. Disabling the line stops ordinary calls and carrier SMS and can affect number-based iMessage registration and voicemail.

  • SMS and short codes: Keep the US line enabled and test before travel. Some short codes, MMS and group messages fail under particular carrier or Wi‑Fi configurations.
  • iMessage: Blue-bubble messages use internet data. Green-bubble SMS/MMS still depends on the carrier line and supported routing.
  • FaceTime, WhatsApp and Signal: These use data and do not prove that ordinary SMS or calls work.
  • Backups: Authentication apps, passkeys, backup codes and email recovery are safer than relying on one SMS path.

Google Voice can text US and Canadian numbers over Wi‑Fi or data, but Google notes that some third-party services may reject Voice numbers (Google Voice texting details).

Calling US numbers versus European numbers

Calling a US contact is often inexpensive or included through a roaming pass, tested Wi‑Fi Calling route, or internet app. Calling a European landline or mobile number is a separate case: Wi‑Fi Calling may still apply international rates, and a data-only eSIM does not supply a dialable local number.

For taxis, restaurants, landlords and government offices that accept only ordinary telephone calls, use carrier roaming or a local-number SIM/eSIM. For emergencies, use the local emergency number—generally 112 within the EU—not WhatsApp or Google Voice, and know which cellular line is active.

Travel eSIM versus a local SIM

Choice Advantages Disadvantages
Travel eSIM Buy before departure; usually install alongside the US line; regional plans can cover several countries; good for data. Often data-only; may not provide a local number; locked phones and activation mistakes cause problems; validity may begin at installation.
Local physical SIM Often includes a local number and local calling/SMS; can be economical for a long stay. Requires an unlocked phone; removing the US SIM makes that number unavailable on the device; registration rules may apply.
Local long-term plan Better fit for months-long residence, local billing and sustained usage. Requires local eligibility, registration and a plan change; you still need a separate strategy for the US number.

For a move or extended residence, a local plan is often more practical than permanent US roaming. EU guidance allows fair-use controls and surcharges when roaming is permanent or excessive; see the EU fair-use FAQ.

Troubleshooting common failures

The eSIM will not install

  • Confirm the phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible.
  • Use stable Wi‑Fi, scan the provider’s current QR code or activation details, and check whether the plan has already been installed on another device.
  • If activation is required in the US, complete it before departure; US Mobile says activation outside the US will not work.

The phone says “SIM not supported”

The device is probably carrier-locked or the eSIM is incompatible with its model or region. Contact the US carrier for unlock eligibility before removing or disabling the US line.

Wi‑Fi Calling will not activate

Recheck account eligibility, HD Voice, emergency-address registration and software updates. Test a different Wi‑Fi network. Hotel captive portals, restrictive firewalls and weak Wi‑Fi can change results; a successful home test is not a guarantee abroad.

SMS codes do not arrive

Confirm the US line is enabled, has the correct default SMS setting and is connected through a supported roaming or Wi‑Fi route. Test ordinary SMS, short codes, MMS and group messages separately. Use an authenticator, passkey or backup code while troubleshooting.

Calls are billed unexpectedly

Check whether the call used cellular roaming, whether the destination was European rather than US, and whether a native dialer fell back from Wi‑Fi. Disable the US line or request a roaming block until the carrier explains the event.

iMessage switched away from the US number

Keep the US line enabled, connect to data, then review Settings → Messages → Send & Receive. If the number is unavailable, iMessage may temporarily use an email address or another active line.

The travel eSIM has data but no ordinary calling

That is normal for a data-only product. Use WhatsApp, Signal, FaceTime or another internet service, or add a plan that explicitly includes voice and SMS or use carrier roaming/local service for ordinary numbers.

Should you port the number to Google Voice?

Consider it only when you are making a deliberate, long-term number-management change. Confirm that banks, employers, government services and account-recovery systems accept the resulting VoIP number. Start the port while in the US, pay the $20 fee, leave the carrier account open until completion, and allow up to 48 hours for the port and up to three business days for texts. Test every critical service before ending the carrier relationship.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a normal vacation, keeping the carrier line active and adding a data eSIM is safer. Porting immediately before an important trip can leave you without dependable SMS, voicemail or 2FA during the transition.

Bottom line

  • Short trip: Choose a carrier international pass if simplicity and native calls/SMS matter most.
  • Cost-conscious traveler: Keep the US line active, add a compatible European data eSIM, disable US data roaming and test Wi‑Fi Calling, SMS, MMS and 2FA before departure.
  • Long-term move: Use a local European plan and preserve the US number separately only after checking fair-use rules, 2FA compatibility and your need for ordinary calls.
