Most people cannot newly claim a $1,400 payment now. The phrase refers to the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, which reconciled a missing or partial third Economic Impact Payment on a 2021 federal tax return. The IRS deadline for eligible people who had not filed a 2021 return was April 15, 2025, and that date has passed. The IRS has not announced a new 2026 $1,400 stimulus check.
What the $1,400 IRS payment actually was
The payment question concerns the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, not a current stimulus program. It was available through a 2021 tax return when the third Economic Impact Payment, including any plus-up payment, was less than the amount allowed under 2021 rules.
The Internal Revenue Service says the eligibility requirements matched those for the third Economic Impact Payments, except that the credit and its amount were calculated from the taxpayer’s 2021 information. Any third payment already received reduced the remaining credit.
Who qualified under the 2021 rules?
For tax year 2021, eligibility generally required all of the following:

- You had a valid Social Security number, subject to the joint-return and active-duty military exceptions in IRS guidance.
- Your 2021 adjusted gross income was below the applicable phaseout limit.
A qualifying dependent could generate an additional credit if the dependent had a valid SSN or an IRS-issued Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number. Nonresident aliens, people who could be claimed as another taxpayer’s dependent, most people without the required SSN qualification, estates and trusts, and people who died before January 1, 2021 were generally excluded.
Historical 2021 income thresholds
These figures apply only to the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. The phaseout began above the first amount and reached zero at the second amount.

| Filing status | Phaseout began above | No credit at or above |
|---|---|---|
| Single and other non-joint filers | $75,000 | $80,000 |
| Head of household | $112,500 | $120,000 |
| Married filing jointly or qualifying surviving spouse | $150,000 | $160,000 |
The Internal Revenue Service published these 2021 thresholds in its 2022 guidance. A lower 2021 income than the income used for an advance payment, a child added through birth or adoption, or a change in dependent status could have created eligibility for a larger credit.
How much could the credit be?
The maximum 2021 credit was $1,400 per eligible individual and $1,400 per qualifying dependent, before income phaseouts and reductions for Economic Impact Payments already received. A married couple filing jointly could qualify for up to $2,800 for the two adults, plus $1,400 for each qualifying dependent, subject to the SSN, military and other rules.

This was a reconciliation, not an automatic bonus. For example, if the IRS had already sent $1,400 for an eligible person, there was no additional credit for that person. If the advance payment was $900 and the 2021 return supported the full amount, the potential remaining credit was $500, subject to the other limitations.
Can you still claim a missing third stimulus payment?
If you never filed a 2021 return
The IRS required a 2021 federal return to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, even for someone who normally did not have to file. The IRS specified April 15, 2025 as the filing deadline for eligible non-filers. That deadline has elapsed, so there is no ordinary open application window for a new claim.

If you filed a 2021 return
Review the filed return to see whether the Recovery Rebate Credit was claimed and whether the amount was reduced because the IRS recorded a third payment or plus-up payment. Compare the return with your IRS payment history and any notices. If you believe the credit was omitted or calculated incorrectly, the outcome depends on your filing date, payment history, IRS correspondence and the exact procedural status of the return.
If you received an IRS letter
Follow the instructions and deadline printed on the letter, and verify the communication through official IRS channels before providing personal information. Letter 6550 tells recipients that IRS records may indicate eligibility for one or more 2021 credits and that a 2021 return is required to claim them. A letter does not itself create a new stimulus program or guarantee a payment.

How to check what the IRS recorded
- Sign in to your IRS Online Account and review the record of third Economic Impact Payments and related notices.
- Find historic notices, including Notice 1444-C and Letter 6475, which reported payment amounts.
- If you filed jointly, have each spouse review the information associated with that spouse’s share; records may not appear as one combined amount.
- Compare those records with your 2021 federal return, bank deposits and any IRS correspondence.
Keep copies of the return, notices and payment evidence. Do not rely on a calculator, payment-advance company or commercial “stimulus” service to reopen a closed federal deadline.
Does the normal refund statute reopen the credit?
The IRS generally describes a refund-claim period of three years from filing or two years from payment, whichever is later. That broad rule is not an individualized ruling that a person may newly claim an expired 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. Your filing date, payment date, prior return and IRS notices determine what remedies, if any, remain. For an already-filed return or unusual case, obtain case-specific advice from the IRS or a qualified tax professional rather than assuming the general period guarantees payment.
Which situation describes you?
| Your situation | What it means now |
|---|---|
| Never filed a 2021 return | The April 15, 2025 IRS deadline for eligible non-filers has passed; a new ordinary claim window is not open. |
| Filed a 2021 return but expected more | Compare the return, Online Account, payment notices and bank records; any correction is fact-specific. |
| Received an IRS notice about a possible 2021 credit | Use the notice’s instructions and authenticate it through IRS.gov channels; a 2021 return is generally required. |
| Waiting for a newly announced $1,400 payment | No new federal $1,400 stimulus payment is identified here; the term refers to the historical credit. |
Bottom line for 2026
The $1,400 figure describes the maximum 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, reduced by payments already received and applicable income rules. Most taxpayers cannot start a new claim because the non-filer deadline passed on April 15, 2025. If you already filed a 2021 return or received an IRS notice, verify your records in your Online Account and get advice based on your specific filing history.
