A balance bike is a two-wheeled bicycle without pedals. Your child pushes with their feet, learns to steer and balance, and gradually lifts their feet to glide. The right choice depends more on inseam, seat height, weight, tires and terrain than on an age label. How to choose a balance bike
Start with inseam and seat height
Measure your child’s inseam and compare it with the maker’s seat-height range. A useful starting point is a saddle about 1 inch below the inseam. Seated, the child should place both feet flat on the ground with a slight knee bend. Use the exact range for the model you are considering; age and wheel size alone can produce a poor fit.
Compare weight within the same size class
A lighter bike is generally easier for a small rider to start, turn and lift. Compare weight only among similarly sized models, because a larger bike may naturally weigh more.
Match tires to your surfaces
- Foam tires: light and puncture-proof, but they can provide less traction on gravel, dirt and grass.
- Air-filled rubber tires: more cushioning and grip on uneven ground, but they require inflation and can puncture.
Decide whether a brake matters
Brakes are model-dependent. A rear handbrake can give a child braking practice and extra control, provided the lever fits a small hand. Some bikes are designed for feet-only stopping. Cycling Weekly puts the basic point plainly: “A balance bike doesn’t have to have a brake – little feet will suffice,” while noting that a rear brake can build confidence and teach a useful skill (Cycling Weekly).

Check comfort, assembly and upkeep
Look for protective grips, a comfortable saddle, sensible leg clearance, a footrest or steering limiter where useful, and clear assembly instructions. Confirm whether you will need to inflate tires or periodically check other hardware.

Model-by-model buying notes
Strider 12 Sport
The 11–19-inch seat range gives this model substantial room to grow, and the 6.7-pound weight is manageable for many small riders. Its foam tires avoid punctures but may feel less secure on loose gravel, dirt or grass, a limitation Babylist specifically notes. Measure carefully: the published inseam range is 12–20 inches.
Banana LT
At 6.4 pounds, the Banana LT is the lightest of these four examples. It has no handbrake, so the child stops with their feet. Its 12.2–15.7-inch seat range and stated 13–17-inch inseam fit make it a better match for a narrower size window than the Strider.

woom GO 1
woom lists the GO 1 for children 31–40 inches tall and roughly 1.5–3.5 years old. The small-hand brake lever, steering limiter and protective grips address control and comfort, but you still need to confirm that your child can plant both feet flat.
woom GO 1 PLUS
The 14-inch GO 1 PLUS targets taller, older preschool riders. One current US page lists 9.6 pounds and a kickstand. Because woom’s pages can present different pricing and specifications, check the live listing before ordering and compare its weight with what your child can comfortably maneuver.

Answers to common buying questions
What age is a balance bike for?
There is no universal starting age. The cited models span about 1.5 years through 5 years, but height and inseam determine readiness. A child should be able to sit on the saddle and place both feet flat on the ground.
Should you buy a cheap balance bike?
Price alone does not establish fit or safety. Before choosing a lower-priced model, verify minimum seat height, actual weight, tire type, steering behavior, brake-lever reach, assembly instructions and warranty support.

What about convertible balance bikes?
Convertible designs can change configuration as a child grows, but extra mechanisms may add weight or complexity. Compare the configuration your child will use now, not only the product’s maximum claimed age.
Are current woom GO bikes part of the 2023 recall?
Babylist reports a July 2023 voluntary recall involving certain woom ORIGINAL bicycles from model years 2018–2021 with a one-bolt stem clamp, because the stem and handlebar could detach. That notice is not a blanket recall of current GO bikes. Owners should check the specific model and stem design in the Babylist report and linked official notice.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Measure the child’s inseam without shoes.
- Confirm the model’s minimum seat height is about 1 inch below that measurement.
- Check that both feet can sit flat with a slight knee bend.
- Compare the bike’s weight with what the child can start, turn and carry.
- Choose foam or air tires for the surfaces you actually ride.
- If there is a brake, verify that the child can reach and squeeze the lever.
- Review assembly tools, tire-inflation needs and current warranty terms.
- Check the live price, stock and specifications immediately before purchase.
