Rolls-Royce’s carbon/titanium (CTi) fan blades first flew in October 2014, fitted to a Trent 1000 donor engine on the company’s 747 flying test bed in Tucson, Arizona. It was a flight test of the fan technology—not the first flight of an UltraFan engine or an airliner entering service with one. Rolls-Royce’s UltraFan remains a technology-demonstrator programme, according to the company’s programme information available as of September 29, 2026.
What flew in 2014?
A complete set of CTi fan blades was installed in a Trent 1000 donor engine carried by Rolls-Royce’s 747 flying test bed. The test took place in Tucson, Arizona. Rolls-Royce’s October 2014 video of the flight documents the configuration and milestone; contemporary Aviation Week reporting provides additional context.
“Donor engine” matters here: the Trent 1000 supplied an established engine platform in which engineers could evaluate new fan hardware. The test did not make that engine an UltraFan, nor did it put a production UltraFan on an airline aircraft. It let Rolls-Royce gather airborne data on the fan system without waiting for a complete new engine architecture.
What does CTi mean?
CTi refers to a hybrid blade: a carbon-fibre composite body with a titanium leading-edge sheath. It does not mean that the blade is simply a uniform mixture of carbon fibre and titanium. The composite structure is intended to reduce mass; the titanium edge is intended to protect the blade against operational hazards such as bird impact and foreign-object damage. UltraFan’s demonstrator also uses a composite fan casing, according to Rolls-Royce’s programme description.
#1 Best Overall
Lower mass can help reduce the rotating weight the engine must accelerate and the loads borne by the fan and low-pressure system. A lighter fan can also help make a larger fan practical. But weight reduction alone does not deliver an aircraft fuel-burn result: that depends on the complete engine and its installation.
Why fan weight and size matter—and what they trade off
A larger fan can move more air around the engine core, supporting a higher bypass ratio and potentially improving propulsive efficiency. A lighter fan may make that architecture easier to achieve without a directly proportional increase in weight. The benefit depends on the interaction of fan aerodynamics, core efficiency, gearbox performance, engine mass, nacelle drag, reliability, maintenance and aircraft integration.

The details of the body interior are realistic. Place the car on a flat ground, press the body and pull it back, the car will drive forward. (With pull back function)
- This Rolls-Royce Phantom 1/32 car model pull back car is very suitable for children to play with. The paint is exquisite and feels good, and it is heavy to hold. It is also very suitable for car model enthusiasts as a decoration.
- Accessories and collections: This product is very suitable for static accessories and can be used as an accessory next to a computer. For those who are passionate about collecting model car models, this is a great art collection.
- Durability: Fan blades face bird strikes, ice and other foreign-object damage, as well as vibration, flutter, centrifugal loads, erosion and repeated operating cycles. The titanium leading edge is part of the damage-protection approach; composite construction by itself does not establish that a blade is safer, cheaper or more durable.
- Aircraft fit: A larger fan needs a larger nacelle and can affect drag, ground clearance, pylon and wing loads, landing-gear requirements, noise and airport clearances. The airframe may need changes to accommodate it.
- Gearbox: A geared architecture lets the fan and turbine operate at different speeds, which can support greater efficiency. It also adds high-power machinery whose reliability, lubrication, heat management, gear durability, containment and maintenance must be demonstrated.
- Variable pitch: Changing blade pitch can expand operating flexibility, but adds actuation hardware, control demands, failure modes and certification and maintenance work.
How CTi connected Advance to UltraFan
Advance was Rolls-Royce’s advanced conventional turbofan concept, aimed at improving propulsion and core efficiency. UltraFan developed into a more radical geared architecture with a variable-pitch fan. CTi fan technology was an enabling element considered for both concepts; its 2014 flight was a component and system-validation milestone within a broader engine-development effort, not a demonstration that either concept was ready for airline use. The original programme expectations reported at the time should not be treated as current service schedules.
What the first flight demonstrated—and what it did not
What it demonstrated
- The CTi fan set could be operated in flight-test conditions in the donor-engine installation.
- The technology had progressed beyond laboratory and ground work to airborne testing.
- Rolls-Royce could collect flight data on the blade and fan system using a flying test bed.
What it did not demonstrate
- Certification readiness or airline-service reliability.
- A final production configuration, selected aircraft application or launch customer.
- That an UltraFan engine had flown in 2014 or entered commercial service.
- That the fan blade alone would produce a specified fuel saving on an aircraft.
How the programme progressed after 2014
| Milestone | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2014 | CTi fan blades first flew in a Trent 1000 donor engine on Rolls-Royce’s 747 flying test bed in Tucson. Rolls-Royce flight video |
| Later development | CTi fan-system development continued on subsequent development hardware, including the Advanced Low Pressure System (ALPS), before the technology was incorporated into the full-scale UltraFan demonstrator. Rolls-Royce programme information |
| 2023 | Rolls-Royce says the first phase of full-scale UltraFan demonstrator testing took place at Test Bed 80 in Derby using 100% sustainable aviation fuel. Rolls-Royce programme information |
| 2025 onward | Rolls-Royce says a second phase began in 2025, expanding ground and flight-related validation to areas including cold-weather performance, relight, altitude starting, combustor stability, controls and fault tolerance. Rolls-Royce programme information |
What the UltraFan demonstrator is designed to test
The full-scale UltraFan 80 demonstrator combines CTi blades with a composite fan casing, a geared fan system, variable pitch and an advanced core. Rolls-Royce specifies a 140-inch fan and a 50 MW-class power gearbox for the demonstrator; these are company specifications, not independent validation of a production engine. The company describes the architecture as scalable across approximately 25,000 to 110,000 pounds of thrust. That range is a stated design capability, not evidence that every size has been developed, certified or selected for an aircraft. See the programme page, UltraFan overview and UltraFan 80 fact sheet.

Rolls-Royce says the demonstrator is compatible with 100% sustainable aviation fuel, and reports using that fuel in the first phase of testing. Fuel compatibility and a test fuel choice do not, by themselves, establish lifecycle emissions: those depend in part on how the fuel is produced and supplied.
How to interpret the 25% efficiency claim
Rolls-Royce describes UltraFan as offering a potential 25% improvement in fuel burn and emissions relative to the first-generation Rolls-Royce Trent engine. This is the manufacturer’s comparison for the broader UltraFan architecture, not an independently verified airline operating result or a saving attributable to the CTi blade alone. It also does not mean a 25% improvement over every current Trent engine. The company’s stated comparison is described in its UltraFan overview.

Where UltraFan stands now
As of September 29, 2026, Rolls-Royce describes UltraFan as a demonstrator and technology-development programme, not an in-service commercial engine. The company says work on UltraFan has also supported improvements to elements of its existing Trent portfolio; that technology transfer is distinct from launching UltraFan itself. See the company’s UltraFan programme page and 2025 programme update.
