IAI Delivers First F-16 Aerostructure Sets and 200th F-35 Wing to Lockheed Martin

IAI’s June 2022 ceremony marked the first F-16 aerostructure sets from reopened lines and the 200th F-35 wing set delivered to Lockheed Martin. Here is what was delivered, how the production restart worked, and which figures remain projections.

On June 12, 2022, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) announced two component-level deliveries to Lockheed Martin: the first F-16 aerostructure sets from recently reopened assembly lines and IAI’s 200th F-35 fighter-aircraft wing set. The event showed both the restart of F-16 structural work for the Block 70/72 program and the maturity of IAI’s continuing F-35 wing supply program.

What happened at IAI’s June 2022 ceremony?

The ceremony took place at IAI’s wing assembly line. IAI said it had delivered Lockheed Martin the first sets of F-16 aerostructures produced after reopening its F-16 assembly lines. The release specifically included F-16 conformal fuel tanks. At the same event, IAI handed over its 200th F-35 wing set.

These were aircraft structures, not complete F-16 or F-35 aircraft. Lockheed Martin remained the prime manufacturer, while IAI supplied parts within Lockheed Martin’s broader production network. IAI’s official announcement provides the primary account of the milestone.

What counts as an F-16 aerostructure?

Aerostructures are major load-bearing aircraft components, rather than avionics, engines or weapons. In describing the reopened F-16 work, IAI identified three production areas:

  • Conformal fuel tanks

The first shipment is confirmed to have included conformal fuel tanks, but IAI did not publish a component-by-component breakdown of the first sets.

Why conformal fuel tanks matter

Conformal fuel tanks are externally mounted tanks shaped to fit closely against the fuselage. Their form can add fuel capacity with less aerodynamic disruption than conventional underwing external tanks. IAI’s announcement does not state the tanks’ capacity or quantify their performance effect for this production configuration, so those specifications should not be inferred from the ceremony.

Why did IAI reopen the F-16 lines?

IAI linked the reopening to renewed demand for new-production F-16 Block 70/72 aircraft. Restarting structural production required more than turning machinery back on. The company said it:

  • Modernized production infrastructure and improved the work environment.
  • Introduced new production tools.
  • Reestablished its hardware-supplier chain.
  • Checked and verified tooling.
  • Completed required first-article inspections.
  • Trained the F-16 production team.

First-article inspection is a formal examination of an initial production item to confirm that manufacturing processes and dimensions meet the approved design. Taken together, these steps indicate a reconstituted and qualified industrial capability. They do not establish that every part of IAI’s former F-16 activity had been completely dormant, nor do they mean IAI was assembling complete fighters.

Demand context, not a current market tally

Lockheed Martin’s August 2022 F-16 fact sheet described the Block 70/72 as a new-production version selected by five nations, with a 128-aircraft backlog at that time. Those figures are historical snapshots from August 2022, not current 2026 totals. They help explain the industrial rationale for reopening IAI’s lines but should not be used as a present-day order book.

What does “the 200th F-35 wing” mean?

IAI’s wording is precise: it delivered its 200th F-35 fighter-aircraft wing set. The article should retain “wing set” rather than converting the milestone into “200 individual wings” or “200 aircraft.” The announcement does not provide a separate definition of the program’s counting unit.

  • Includes Display Stand: Comes with a custom plastic stand to display the aircraft in an in-flight pose, recommended for adult collectors and military aviation enthusiasts ages 14 and up.

IAI said it operates a dedicated F-35 wing production line and manufactures the aircraft’s outer wing boxes along with its upper and lower wing skins. IAI described those skins as composite components associated with the F-35 design. That is a company characterization of the program’s technology, not an independent claim that comparable composite work exists nowhere else in aerospace.

Unlike the F-16 event, which marked the reopening of production capability, the 200th F-35 set reflects recurring deliveries from an established line. IAI said the F-35 line was inaugurated in 2014.

How large was the F-35 contract?

IAI’s June 2022 announcement described the contract scope as follows:

Item IAI’s stated figure How to read it
Contract signed 2011 Date given in IAI’s 2022 release
Planned production 811 pairs of F-35A wings Forward-looking quantity announced in 2022
Potential value More than $2 billion IAI’s potential-value estimate, not a disclosed fixed price
Projected horizon By 2034 Schedule stated in the 2022 announcement
Production line inaugurated 2014 Date supplied by IAI

The 811-pair and more-than-$2-billion figures were projections published in 2022. They are not confirmation that all 811 pairs had been delivered, that the contract’s final value was exactly (or still) more than $2 billion, or that the schedule remained unchanged as of August 2026. The value could also encompass broader program work rather than a simple fixed price for each wing pair; IAI did not provide that accounting detail.

What does the milestone show about the IAI–Lockheed Martin relationship?

IAI said it had manufactured aerostructures for Lockheed Martin since the 1980s. Lockheed Martin Israel executive Joshua Shani described IAI as a valued partner in both the F-35 and F-16 supply chains and said the companies had worked together for more than 40 years.

The practical significance is a multi-program relationship: IAI contributes F-16 structural parts, produces F-35 wing assemblies, and operates within Lockheed Martin’s international supplier network. The ceremony marked progress in an established relationship rather than the creation of a new strategic partnership.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish

Confirmed by the June 2022 release

  • The announcement date was June 12, 2022.
  • IAI delivered the first sets from recently reopened F-16 aerostructure assembly lines.
  • Conformal fuel tanks were among the F-16 items identified.
  • IAI delivered its 200th F-35 wing set to Lockheed Martin.
  • IAI described work on F-16 wings, vertical fins and conformal fuel tanks, and on F-35 outer wing boxes and wing skins.

Not disclosed or not current

  • The number of F-16 sets in the first shipment.
  • The F-16 end customer or customers.
  • The F-16 order’s contract value.
  • A detailed F-16 delivery schedule.
  • Whether the 811-pair F-35 projection, its potential value or its 2034 horizon remained unchanged in 2026.
  • A current 2026 Block 70/72 backlog or customer count.

Accordingly, the event should be described as a delivery milestone and an industrial restart—not as proof of a completed aircraft order, a complete-aircraft production line or current production performance.

Why the two deliveries matter differently

The shared ceremony can obscure the contrast between the programs. The F-16 delivery demonstrated that IAI had rebuilt and qualified manufacturing capacity for a legacy fighter that remains in new production as the Block 70/72. The F-35 delivery demonstrated sustained production of specialized wing structures for a fifth-generation aircraft program already operating on a dedicated line.

Read together, the milestones show an Israeli aerospace supplier supporting both a restarted F-16 structural effort and a long-running F-35 manufacturing program. The evidence supports that industrial conclusion; it does not supply undisclosed order quantities, customers or updated financial results.

The Bottom Line

IAI’s June 2022 event combined two distinct achievements: first deliveries from reopened F-16 aerostructure lines, including conformal fuel tanks, and delivery of the company’s 200th F-35 wing set. The 811-pair, more-than-$2-billion F-35 figure was a forward-looking 2022 projection, while the F-16 shipment’s quantity, customer and value were not disclosed.
