The evidence supports a pointed piece of visual branding, not a confirmed personal feud. The hairstyle in the headline is mainly part of Zuckerberg’s broader image makeover; Graber’s verifiable SXSW message was the shirt.
Who was the CEO in the black T-shirt?
It was Jay Graber, CEO of Bluesky. She wore the shirt at SXSW on March 10, 2025, in an appearance reported on March 13, 2025. The report and its embedded social posts identify the phrase and its translation. See the event report.
Bluesky presents itself as an open-network alternative to more centralized social platforms. Its model is intended to support multiple applications and greater user portability, rather than making one company’s app the only place a community can exist. That background made “a world without emperors” especially legible as a comment about concentrated platform power.

What did the two shirts say?
| Executive | Shirt text | Reported meaning | Symbolic direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mark Zuckerberg | Aut Zuck aut nihil | “Either Zuck or nothing,” adapting Aut Caesar aut nihil | Singular authority or indispensability |
| Jay Graber | Mundus sine cesaribus | “A world without emperors” | Rejection of ruler-like control |
The matching format—large classical-language lettering on a black shirt—made the contrast easy to recognize. Graber’s phrase reverses the direction of Zuckerberg’s slogan: instead of celebrating one dominant figure, it imagines a system that does not need emperors.
Why Zuckerberg’s slogan mattered
Zuckerberg’s shirt was part of a continuing change in his public presentation. Coverage documented longer, looser curls, chains, black slogan shirts and more fashion-forward clothing replacing the gray T-shirt and hoodie associated with his earlier Facebook-era image. The Guardian’s analysis discusses “Aut Zuck aut nihil” alongside other shirts, including “Carthago delenda est” (“Carthage must be destroyed”) and “Pathei mathos” (“learning through suffering”).

The Caesar reference has been discussed in connection with Julius Caesar and Cesare Borgia, although it should not be treated as a quotation whose authorship is certain. In context, readers reasonably saw Zuckerberg’s personalized version as imperial imagery or a deliberately dominant persona—not proof that he literally called himself an emperor.
Was Graber directly attacking Zuckerberg?
The timing and mirrored design make a response to Zuckerberg a reasonable reading. The source article itself frames the appearance as mockery, while the available evidence more precisely establishes a visual counter-message. There is no documented private confrontation, formal dispute or statement from Graber proving that the shirt was intended as a personal attack.

A cautious description is that Graber appeared to parody or counter Zuckerberg’s slogan. The interpretation also fits Bluesky’s institutional pitch: if users dislike an owner’s decisions, an open network should make it easier to move to another application or service. That is an argument against executive indispensability, not necessarily a claim about Zuckerberg’s character.
Where does the hairstyle fit?
Zuckerberg’s hairstyle—not a documented Graber hairstyle stunt—is the clearer part of this story. His move from a close-cropped cut to longer, curlier hair was covered as part of an effort to look younger, more approachable and less robotic. A later Guardian report describes the curls, chains and looser clothing in that makeover.

The SXSW evidence establishes Graber’s black shirt and Latin phrase. It does not establish that her hairstyle carried a separate coded message, so the headline’s suggestion that the response depended on a “specific hairstyle” overstates what is known.

For years, Zuckerberg’s gray T-shirt and hoodie communicated efficiency and product-focused minimalism. The newer wardrobe communicates a different set of signals: confidence, youth, cultural fluency and willingness to be noticed. Once that visual language became familiar, a rival executive could answer in the same medium without issuing a formal statement.

Graber’s shirt worked because it was inexpensive, instantly visible and tied a platform argument to a memorable phrase. The joke was about fashion on the surface, but underneath it contrasted a centralized company led by one highly visible executive with Bluesky’s ambition for a more portable, multi-application network.
What is not established
- No available reporting proves an ongoing personal feud between Graber and Zuckerberg.
- The evidence does not show who authored every slogan or designed each garment.
- There is no verified official Bluesky shop listing, price or sales announcement for the exact Mundus sine cesaribus shirt.
- Bluesky should not be described as having no central leadership or as being completely free from corporate control; the relevant point is its open-network and portability goals.
Readers who want to explore the service can visit Bluesky. The shirt itself is best understood as a one-off piece of internet-era executive messaging unless an official retail source says otherwise.
The Bottom Line
Jay Graber was the Bluesky CEO who appeared at SXSW in a shirt reading “Mundus sine cesaribus.” It visually answered Zuckerberg’s “Aut Zuck aut nihil” by rejecting the idea that online platforms need an emperor. The shirt is documented; a hairstyle-based message or formal feud is not.
