On June 2, 2011, Indra outlined a planned display for the Paris Air Show at Le Bourget, held June 20–26 that year. Its portfolio ranged from aircraft self-protection and air-surveillance radar to unmanned aircraft and portable surveillance equipment. The systems were not one integrated demonstrator: they served different platforms and missions.
What “embarked systems” meant in the 2011 announcement
In aerospace usage, “embarked” refers to equipment installed on or carried by a platform. The 2011 headline used the term in two ways: electronic-defense equipment integrated into aircraft, and an unmanned helicopter intended to operate from ships. The phrase “latest-generation” belongs to the 2011 context; it is not a description of the current aircraft market. The contemporary announcement is available in Indian Defence Review’s June 2011 report.
Aircraft self-protection: warning and countermeasures
ALR-400 radar-warning receiver
The ALR-400 was presented as a radar-warning receiver: it detects radar emissions that may indicate a threat and provides warning information to the aircraft’s crew or defensive systems. It does not itself destroy a threat. The 2011 report associated it with the A400M and said aircraft delivered to the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Germany, Turkey and Malaysia were expected to receive it. That is a period report of expected fit, not independent confirmation of every aircraft’s final configuration.
The same account named the F-18, Tiger, NH90, CH-53, Chinook and Cougar among platforms with Indra electronic-defense systems. It does not establish a single identical fit or operational status across every listed platform. Indra also described a role in Eurofighter electronic-defense work; that program participation should not be confused with a claim that every item in the Paris display was fitted to the Eurofighter.

MANTA directional infrared countermeasures
MANTA was intended to counter infrared-guided threats, including man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS). Unlike the ALR-400, which warns about radar emissions, an infrared countermeasure system is designed to disrupt a missile’s ability to track an aircraft. The 2011 report said Indra planned to show MANTA developments following successful experimental flight testing. Experimental testing is not the same as full operational qualification or procurement.
Surveillance radar: LANZA 3D and Mode-S
LANZA 3D
LANZA 3D was part of the planned display as an air-surveillance radar family. The 2011 report said it formed part of Spain’s early-warning network and described it as meeting NATO requirements. Those are claims made in that contemporary account; they should not be read as a current configuration or independent performance assessment.

Mode-S primary radar
Indra also planned to present a Mode-S primary radar for civil-airspace monitoring and air-traffic-management support. This belongs to airspace surveillance, not aircraft self-protection: it is a ground-based monitoring capability rather than an onboard warning receiver or missile countermeasure.
Pelican: a shipborne unmanned helicopter
Pelican was Indra’s unmanned helicopter concept for maritime and border-surveillance missions, designed to operate from naval vessels or patrol ships. A shipborne helicopter UAV has to function within the constraints of a moving, space-limited launch and recovery site; that distinguishes it from a tactical fixed-wing UAV. The 2011 report forecast operational availability within a few months, but a forecast is not evidence that the capability entered service on that schedule. Indra later reported a Pelican flight demonstration in its account of a flight in Segovia; that does not by itself establish naval deployment.

Mantis and PASI: other surveillance capabilities
Mantis portable electro-optical surveillance
Mantis was described as a lightweight, rapidly deployable electro-optical surveillance system providing real-time observation. It was a portable sensor capability, distinct from both the aircraft-mounted defensive systems and the Pelican unmanned helicopter.
PASI tactical UAV
The 2011 report also cited PASI, a tactical unmanned aircraft used by Spanish forces in Afghanistan, as evidence of Indra’s wider unmanned-systems activity. PASI and Pelican were not interchangeable: the report identifies PASI as a tactical UAV and Pelican as an unmanned helicopter designed for shipborne missions.

| Extend surveillance reach | Pelican; PASI; Mantis | Unmanned aircraft and portable electro-optical equipment support maritime, border or tactical observation missions. |
This spread helps explain the business significance of the Paris appearance: Indra was positioning itself across onboard survivability, radar surveillance, unmanned systems and mission support for aircraft manufacturers, armed forces and aerospace customers. The available account establishes the planned exhibition, not a contract or procurement outcome arising from it.
Eurofighter and the future combat-air program
The announcement placed Indra’s electronic-defense work alongside its involvement in the Eurofighter program and the then-developing FCAS/NGWS concept. FCAS/NGWS is a future European air-combat program, not a fielded system from the 2011 show. Indra’s 2021 description framed it as a system of systems involving a next-generation fighter, unmanned platforms, sensors, a combat cloud and interoperability with other domains (Indra, May 17, 2021).
How Indra’s portfolio evolved after 2011
Indra’s later product language shows development beyond the 2011 display, but does not establish that every later system is a renamed or direct successor to a 2011 item. In an August 2025 release, the company described a full-digital aircraft self-protection suite combining the ALR-400 Full Digital radar-warning receiver, InWarner laser-warning system, InShield DIRCM and expendable countermeasures such as chaff and flares (Indra, August 4, 2025). InShield performs a broad defensive function against infrared-guided missiles, but the cited material does not establish that it is identical to MANTA or document a direct product lineage.
Indra’s 2025 FCAS/NGWS description continued to present a future system involving a sixth-generation fighter and accompanying carriers or drones, with entry into service described as a 2040 objective (Indra, June 30, 2025). At the 2025 Paris Air Show, the company also highlighted AI-enabled tactical-scenario generation for simulators, an example of its later exhibition activity extending into software and simulation (Indra, June 17, 2025). These later developments provide context, not evidence about what was displayed in 2011.
