Canonical did not unveil a new consumer Ubuntu desktop at Mobile World Congress Barcelona, held March 3–6, 2025. At booth 2A90 in Hall 2, it presented Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as the base layer for edge AI, private 5G, Open RAN, confidential computing and cloud-native telecom infrastructure. Ubuntu 25.04, codenamed Plucky Puffin, arrived later on April 17, 2025, so it was not an MWC launch.

The event’s “next chapter” was therefore a commercial infrastructure strategy: combine Ubuntu with Kubernetes, bare-metal management, private-cloud software, telecom components and security technologies so organizations can run workloads close to where data is created.

What Canonical announced before MWC 2025

Canonical’s event preview identified four themes: next-generation infrastructure, edge computing, confidential AI and cloud-native telecom. The company described 5G edge computing as a major opportunity and cited Omdia projections that public-network edge servers could grow from approximately 100,000 units in 2023 to about 1.2 million by 2032, with more than $26 billion in annualized IaaS and SaaS revenue potential by 2032. These are projections quoted by Canonical from Omdia, not independently verified market results. Canonical’s MWC preview also referenced research suggesting that 90% of communications service providers without a full commercial edge deployment planned edge activity; that figure should likewise be read as attributed survey or forecast data, not a measured outcome.

What Canonical actually demonstrated

Canonical’s February event report described three planned AI/ML demonstrations, but its published text clearly details only two. The confirmed examples used bare-metal Kubernetes at the edge.

Workplace-safety monitoring

A Dell PowerEdge XR8000 server with Intel Xeon Scalable processors ran Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and Canonical Kubernetes 1.32 LTS. A cloud-native AI/ML workload processed a live video stream and detected anomalies intended to alert an operator. This showed an architecture for local video analysis; it did not establish production accuracy, operating cost or return on investment.

Automated greeting and badge recognition

The same general Dell, Intel, Ubuntu and Kubernetes stack analyzed video to detect employee or user badges, parse images and greet identified people by name. The demonstration illustrated how identity-related workloads can run near cameras and users, but organizations would still need consent procedures, retention rules, accuracy testing and controls for biometric or employee-monitoring data.

Canonical’s complete demonstration report is available at Experience edge AI use cases with Canonical at MWC Barcelona 2025. The available account does not establish what the third demonstration was, so it should not be described as a specific use case.

Ubuntu’s role in Canonical’s stack

Ubuntu was the operating-system foundation, not the sole headline product. The MWC AI demonstrations used Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat), Canonical’s long-term-support release. On top of that foundation, the architecture can be understood in layers:

  1. Ubuntu: The operating system for servers, edge systems and certified hardware.
  2. Canonical Kubernetes: Container orchestration for cloud-native applications and AI/ML workloads; the demonstrations identified version 1.32 LTS.
  3. Applications: Video analytics, telecom functions and other workloads run as containers.
  4. Edge hardware: Local servers process data near cameras, machines, devices or users.
  5. Connectivity: Private 5G and telecom components connect devices and sites.
  6. Lifecycle tooling: MAAS, Juju, OpenStack and related services can provision hardware, manage applications and operate private clouds.

This is a supported, modular infrastructure proposition rather than a replacement for Ubuntu’s desktop edition. Canonical’s portfolio also includes Ubuntu Core for transactional embedded and edge devices, Charmed Aether SD-Core for 5G core functions, and products for confidential computing.

Private 5G and Open RAN

A separate Canonical demonstration described a cloud-native private mobile network using Canonical Kubernetes, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Charmed Aether SD-Core, Dell PowerEdge XR8000 hardware and Intel Xeon Scalable processors. The accompanying article is at 5G without compromise: building mission-critical private networks for Industry 4.0 with open source.

Private 5G is aimed at controlled environments such as factories, ports, logistics sites, campuses and industrial facilities. Compared with ordinary Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet, it may offer managed mobility, predictable coverage, device density and direct integration with local compute. It still requires spectrum arrangements, radio equipment, subscriber and device management, security controls, skilled operations and a defensible business case.

Canonical’s Open RAN and telecom message was to run virtualized network functions on commercial off-the-shelf hardware, with automated lifecycle management and a common infrastructure layer for core, edge and AI workloads. Open source can improve flexibility, but it does not automatically remove dependency: hardware certification, carrier-grade support, integration work and specialized telecom software can remain substantial sources of lock-in.

How confidential AI fits

Canonical described confidential AI through confidential computing: hardware-backed techniques intended to protect data and code while workloads are being processed, in both public and private clouds running Ubuntu. This addresses a gap left by ordinary encryption:

  • Encryption at rest protects stored data.
  • Encryption in transit protects data moving across networks.
  • Confidential computing seeks to protect selected data and code during computation.

Confidential computing is not a complete security guarantee. It does not fix vulnerable applications, compromised credentials, weak access policies, malicious models, insecure key management or every side-channel risk. It must be combined with identity controls, secure deployment and threat modeling.

What changed for ordinary Ubuntu users?

For desktop users, MWC 2025 was not a major Ubuntu release event. Ubuntu 25.04 (Plucky Puffin) was announced on April 17, 2025, after the congress. Canonical’s release announcement lists GNOME 48, Linux kernel 6.14, new “devpacks” for popular frameworks including Spring, an ARM64 desktop ISO and other developer and hardware improvements: Ubuntu 25.04 release announcement.

Why edge AI was central

Canonical’s argument was to place AI workloads where data is generated: factories, worksites, private mobile networks, telecom edge locations and enterprise premises. Local processing can reduce latency, limit data movement and keep services functioning when a centralized cloud connection is impaired. The trade-off is tighter limits on power, cooling, storage, accelerators and remote administration. Model size, hardware capability, network resilience and governance determine whether an edge design is practical.

Who should care about this strategy?

Telecom operators

Operators may value a common Kubernetes and Ubuntu foundation for distributed network functions, edge services and AI, but must validate carrier-grade support, interoperability and lifecycle costs.

Manufacturers and logistics companies

Local video analytics and private 5G can support low-latency monitoring and mobile equipment. Buyers should test false-positive rates, model drift, privacy obligations and behavior during network outages.

DevOps and infrastructure teams

Canonical’s stack offers repeatable deployment across servers and edge sites, but Kubernetes, observability, patching and hardware qualification add operational work. A small deployment may be better served by a simpler host or managed cloud service.

Desktop users

The event signals Canonical’s enterprise direction, not a change to the everyday Ubuntu desktop. Users interested in the desktop should evaluate the later Ubuntu 25.04 release on its own terms.

Trade-offs before adopting the model

  • Open source versus complexity: Open components can reduce licensing dependence and increase choice, while integration, upgrades, security and support remain the buyer’s responsibility.
  • Edge AI versus centralized cloud: Edge can reduce latency and data transfer, but distributed sites are harder to secure and maintain.
  • Kubernetes flexibility versus overhead: Kubernetes helps standardize workloads, yet may be excessive for a single small application.
  • Private 5G versus Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Cellular mobility and managed coverage are valuable only when they justify spectrum, radio and operational costs.
  • Commercial support versus community Ubuntu: Enterprise subscriptions can provide maintenance, support and lifecycle assurances, but add cost and commercial dependency.

Practical failure modes to plan for

  • Nominally compatible servers may lack the memory, accelerators or storage required by video models.
  • Disconnected edge sites need local operation, queuing and recovery procedures.
  • Lighting, camera placement, uniforms and site conditions can cause model drift.
  • Safety and identity systems need human review, escalation rules and measurable accuracy thresholds.
  • Video analytics can create employee-monitoring and biometric-data risks.
  • Distributed clusters are harder to patch consistently than centralized systems.
  • A proof of concept on one certified x86 server does not guarantee equivalent results on other x86, ARM, GPU or accelerator platforms.
  • “Open source” does not mean every combination of hardware, kernel, add-on and AI framework is supported.

The bottom line on Canonical’s “next chapter”

MWC 2025 showed Canonical extending Ubuntu from a general-purpose operating system into a common foundation for cloud, telecom, AI and edge infrastructure. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS sat beneath Kubernetes, private-5G software and local AI demonstrations; confidential computing addressed protection during processing. That is a significant enterprise direction, but it was not a single consumer Ubuntu unveiling, and the demonstrations did not prove universal performance, economics or production readiness.
