Yes—the HTC EXODUS 1s was designed to run a Bitcoin full node through its Zion app. HTC’s original wizard uses a microSD card, Wi‑Fi and at least 280 GB of free portable-storage space. In 2026, however, this is a legacy experiment, not a currently supported node platform: HTC’s documentation is old, and current Zion availability, software compatibility and synchronization have not been independently verified.
What the EXODUS 1s actually does
The EXODUS 1s is the 2019 HTC model specifically marketed with integrated Bitcoin full-node functionality. It combines Android, the Zion wallet, HTC’s vendor-described secure key-handling environment and a node feature inside Zion. Do not assume that every EXODUS phone has identical support; the EXODUS 1 and 1s had separate documentation and software.
HTC announced the 1s in October 2019 with Android 8.1, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of internal storage, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor and a 3,000 mAh battery. Those are launch specifications, not evidence of current software support or suitable used-device condition. HTC’s launch announcement also listed regional launch prices, including €219 in Europe; those historical prices should not be treated as 2026 market values.
A full node downloads Bitcoin blocks and transactions, validates them against consensus rules and relays valid data to peers. That lets you verify blockchain information without trusting a third-party data provider. It is not mining, does not create coins and does not pay block rewards merely for running. The node also does not automatically make transactions private, turn Zion into a dedicated hardware wallet or provide a general-purpose Bitcoin Core RPC, Electrum or Lightning server. See Bitcoin.org’s full-node explanation for the general role of a node.

Is the feature still usable in 2026?
What can be established is that HTC’s user guide documents a working feature with the path Zion → Full Node, a microSD requirement, network choices and pause-and-resume synchronization. HTC’s launch material confirms that running a Bitcoin full node was a core EXODUS 1s selling point.
What is not established is equally important. There is no verified current statement here that HTC still distributes Zion, maintains the node software, supplies security patches or supports synchronization with today’s Bitcoin network. The current chain’s storage requirement and whether the original software can complete an initial sync have not been verified either.
Therefore, treat the 1s as a device to test if you already own one—not as a phone you should buy solely for dependable node operation. The practical test is whether your handset boots, Zion is present and the Full Node screen still works without sideloading unknown software.
Check viability before changing anything
- Confirm the exact model is HTC EXODUS 1s in Android settings and on the handset or packaging.
- Make a verified backup of the Zion wallet recovery phrase. Never enter it on a website, in a support chat or in an untrusted app.
- Open Zion and check whether Full Node appears before formatting storage or resetting the phone.
- Obtain a reliable microSD card with more free capacity than the app’s historical minimum, leaving room for growth and temporary files.
- Prepare stable Wi‑Fi and a reputable charger; initial synchronization can use substantial data and run for a long time.
- Do not make the phone your sole wallet for significant funds. HTC’s secure-enclave claims are vendor claims, not a modern independent security certification.
Documented requirements
HTC’s EXODUS 1s guide specifies the following:
| Requirement | What HTC documented | 2026 qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Device | HTC EXODUS 1s | Current availability and support are unverified. |
| Storage | microSD formatted as portable storage | Adopted/internal storage should not be assumed to work. |
| Capacity | At least 280 GB free | This is a legacy minimum, not a guarantee for the current blockchain. |
| Network | Wi‑Fi only or Any network | Wi‑Fi is the safer default for data usage. |
| Power | External power is advisable during synchronization | An aging battery and sustained heat can interrupt operation. |
| Sync behavior | Large initial download; may take a long time; can pause and resume | No current duration has been verified. |
Read the original controls in HTC’s EXODUS 1s user guide. The 280 GB figure is the space HTC required for its implementation at the time. Do not buy a card with exactly that much nominal capacity and assume it will remain sufficient: usable capacity, temporary files, failures and future chain growth all reduce your margin.

How to start the node
- Insert a microSD card and format it as portable storage, not adopted or internal storage. Back up any files on the card first.
- Open Zion.
- From the Zion home screen, tap Full Node.
- On the first launch, tap Set up now, then Tap to set up.
- Grant the permissions Zion requests.
- Allow Zion to check the microSD card. If it reports sufficient free space, tap Next.
- Choose Wi‑Fi only or Any network. Choose Wi‑Fi only unless you have deliberately accepted the mobile-data risk.
- Start synchronization and keep the phone connected to power and a stable network.
- Use the app’s pause and resume controls if you must interrupt the process. The node becomes usable only after its initial synchronization completes.
HTC documents an in-app wizard rather than a terminal installation. Do not invent Bitcoin Core commands, daemon names or configuration files for this handset; the official 1s route is through Zion.
What synchronization involves
The first synchronization downloads a large blockchain dataset and validates it. The guide warns that it uses substantial data and may take a long time. Keep the phone stationary on reliable Wi‑Fi, connected to power and out of direct sunlight. An aging Snapdragon 435 phone and small battery can experience heat, throttling, battery wear or background-process interruptions during sustained activity.
Mobile use is technically described by HTC, but a moving cellular connection can repeatedly reconnect and consume expensive data. A full node also benefits from uninterrupted uptime; portability does not make an intermittent travel connection equivalent to an always-on home server.
In general Bitcoin terminology, an archival node retains the historical blockchain, while a pruned node validates the chain and discards older block files. The 280 GB requirement indicates that HTC presented a substantial local blockchain download, but the available Zion documentation does not establish whether its implementation offers pruning or which mode it uses. Bitcoin.org’s current full-node material and source documentation discuss storage and node operation separately; they do not document Zion’s internals. See the Bitcoin.org full-node documentation.

Storage and wallet safety
microSD storage is a likely failure point for a continuously reading and writing node. A counterfeit, worn or damaged card can interrupt synchronization or corrupt local data. Reformatting may fix a format mismatch, but it cannot repair failing flash media.
Blockchain files can generally be downloaded again. Wallet keys cannot be recreated from those files alone. Keep the Zion recovery phrase backed up separately and verify that the backup works before experimenting with storage, uninstalling Zion or factory-resetting the phone. A factory reset without a verified seed backup can permanently remove access to funds.
Running a node and protecting private keys are separate jobs. An outdated Android installation may have an unknown security-patch status, and a node does not protect funds if the handset is compromised. Use the EXODUS 1s for validation or experimentation rather than as the sole custody device for meaningful holdings; a separately secured hardware wallet or other wallet should hold funds that would materially affect your finances.

“Full Node” is missing
- Recheck that the handset is an EXODUS 1s, not another EXODUS model.
- Confirm Zion is installed and not disabled on an altered or incomplete software build.
- Consider whether a factory reset, update or missing original app removed the feature.
- Do not sideload a random APK claiming to be Zion. Preserve the wallet backup first and treat a missing menu as a current compatibility failure.
The card is rejected or capacity is insufficient
- Back up files on the card.
- Check that Android identifies it as portable storage.
- Confirm genuinely free space rather than advertised nominal capacity.
- Reformat as portable storage, reinsert the card and repeat Zion’s capacity check.
- Replace the card if errors continue; reformatting does not prove the media is healthy.
Synchronization stalls
- Move to stable Wi‑Fi and reliable power.
- Confirm free space and leave the phone cool and stationary.
- If the relevant Android controls exist on your firmware, remove battery-saving restrictions for Zion.
- Pause and resume once, then record any exact error message.
- Do not erase wallet or blockchain data until the recovery phrase is safely backed up.
Repeated failure can also reflect obsolete node software, peer incompatibility, thermal throttling, interrupted cellular connections or failing storage. No current sync-time estimate can responsibly be supplied without testing the particular handset and software.

Mobile data, heat or battery problems
Use Wi‑Fi only unless you have an unlimited plan and understand the risk of a large download. Provide airflow, avoid direct sunlight, use a reputable charger and stop using the phone if the battery swells or becomes unusually hot. A damaged battery is a safety issue, not merely a performance problem.
What the node does not provide automatically
The official guide documents Zion’s own node workflow, not a general self-hosted Bitcoin service. It does not establish Bitcoin Core RPC access, Electrum-server indexing, remote wallet connections, Tor configuration, inbound port forwarding or Lightning integration. If you need those functions, choose a platform with current documentation for them.
Should you use an EXODUS 1s in 2026?
| Your situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| You already own a working 1s and Zion still shows Full Node | Try it as a controlled experiment after backing up the wallet. |
| You need a dependable, current node | Use Bitcoin Core on an SSD-based computer or mini-PC. |
| You want a polished self-hosting interface | Consider StartOS or another actively maintained node platform. |
| You plan to hold significant funds on the phone | Do not rely on the legacy handset as sole custody. |
| You need Lightning, Electrum or remote access | Prefer a modern Linux-based node with documented support. |
| You would have to buy the phone specifically for this purpose | Do not assume current Zion compatibility or support; compare modern hardware instead. |
Modern alternatives
Bitcoin Core on your own hardware
A current Raspberry Pi-class computer or used x86 mini-PC with an SSD offers replaceable storage, current Linux and Bitcoin Core packages, better documentation and access to services such as Tor, Electrum servers and Lightning. It requires more setup and administration than Zion, and hardware prices vary, so no fixed build cost is stated here. Start with Bitcoin.org’s full-node documentation.
StartOS on self-supplied hardware
Start9 says readers can install StartOS on compatible self-supplied hardware instead of buying a branded server. Its documentation is at docs.start9.com, and its FAQ describes Bitcoin services, storage configurations and self-build options at start9.com/faq. You save on proprietary hardware, but compatibility, installation and maintenance become your responsibility.
Start9 Server One
For a turnkey option, Start9 currently lists Server One at $899 USD on its product page. The listed system uses an AMD Ryzen 7 6800H, can be configured with up to 4 TB of storage and 32 GB of RAM, and includes a two-year limited hardware warranty plus lifetime Start9 support. Details and current availability are at the official Server One page. It costs far more than repurposing a phone, but is designed for an expandable, always-on home server.
The verdict
The HTC EXODUS 1s remains a notable example of a smartphone built to run a Bitcoin full node. Its original Zion wizard is clear: portable microSD storage, a historical 280 GB free-space requirement, Wi‑Fi and a long initial synchronization. But those instructions are legacy documentation, not proof that the feature still works or receives support in 2026. If you already own the phone, back up the wallet and test it without sideloading software or risking funds. For a serious long-term node, current SSD-based hardware running maintained Bitcoin software is the more defensible choice.
