However, Google removed that card as a payment method on June 22, 2026. Money already in a Google Pay balance remains available to view and transfer to a linked bank account or debit card.
What the Google Pay Balance Card was
The Google Pay Balance Card was a virtual payment card connected directly to a user’s Google Pay balance. It was not a physical card and did not draw on a normal credit line or the available balance of a bank-issued debit card.
Google’s U.S. buyer terms identified Pathward, N.A., Member FDIC, as the issuer, pursuant to a Visa U.S.A. license. The program was limited to eligible users in the United States; it was not a worldwide Google Pay feature. See the Google Pay U.S. buyer terms.
Where it could be used
Historically, the card could be used for eligible purchases at participating U.S. merchants that accepted the Google Pay Balance Card through Visa and Google Pay, including some participating online merchants. Visa branding did not guarantee acceptance at every merchant, for every transaction type, or at every online checkout.

What changed on June 22, 2026
Google’s current U.S. support documentation says the virtual Google Pay Balance Card was removed as a payment method on June 22, 2026. That ended the card-payment function. It did not, according to Google, erase existing balance funds or remove the ability to manage them. Other cards saved in Google Wallet were not affected. Read Google’s status and withdrawal guidance at Google Pay balance support.
How to withdraw money from an existing balance
Google’s documented withdrawal path is:
- Open the Google Wallet app.
- Tap the balance profile button.
- Select Transfer out.
- Choose a linked, supported bank account or debit card.
Labels and screens can vary by account and app version. If no destination appears, first confirm that a supported bank account or debit card is linked. Do not expect the discontinued balance-card number to restore spending capability.

Do not confuse the former balance card with Google Wallet virtual card numbers
Google still documents a different virtual-card feature for eligible credit and debit cards saved in Google Wallet. These virtual numbers mask the underlying bank-card number during supported online or in-app checkout, commonly through Chrome or Android autofill. Eligibility depends on the issuer, card network, country and region; some issuers provide merchant-specific numbers, and identity verification may be required. See Google’s virtual-card explanation.
| Feature | Former Google Pay Balance Card | Ordinary Google Wallet virtual card |
|---|---|---|
| Funding source | Google Pay balance | Eligible credit or debit card |
| Status | Removed as a payment method on June 22, 2026 | Still documented for eligible cards |
| Main purpose | Spend stored Google Pay funds | Hide a bank-card number online or in apps |
| Geography | U.S.-only balance program | Varies by issuer, network and region |
| Creates a new credit line? | No | No; the underlying card’s credit line, balance, fees and transaction records remain relevant |
| Physical card? | No | No |
An ordinary virtual card cannot be used as a replacement way to spend a Google Pay cash balance. It represents an eligible bank card, not stored Google Pay funds. Google says it does not charge a monetary fee for using an ordinary virtual card, but issuer, network, transfer or other account fees may still apply.

The accurate answer to the headline
Google Pay’s virtual balance card was a real, U.S.-only feature, but it is not a current way to pay. Google discontinued it as a payment method on June 22, 2026. Existing funds remain available for withdrawal through Google Wallet, while Google’s separate virtual-card numbers continue only for eligible underlying bank cards.
