Sprint’s April 25, 2017 promotion offered eligible new customers a fifth Unlimited Freedom line with no advertised monthly service charge after they activated four lines. The first four lines still cost money, the quoted prices assumed AutoPay, and Sprint described the offer as limited-time. This is a historical promotion, not a current offer. Contemporary coverage of Sprint’s announcement did not give a definite end date.
How the fifth-line promotion worked
Sprint said new customers who activated four lines on Unlimited Freedom could get a fifth unlimited line free. In practical terms, the promotion waived the fifth line’s advertised service charge; it did not make a five-line account free. The offer was described as limited-time, but the April 25, 2017 report did not identify when it would end. The announcement coverage is the source for these terms.
What the advertised service cost
The published monthly rates included a $5 AutoPay discount. At the four-line rate, the math for a household activating the required four paid lines was $30 × 4, or $120 per month for service; the fifth line was listed at $0. That makes the calculated average $24 per line across five lines, before taxes, fees, device payments, or other charges.
| Lines | Advertised monthly service price | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| One | $50 | AutoPay-discounted rate reported for one line |
| Two | $40 per line; $80 total | AutoPay-discounted rate reported for two lines |
| Four | $30 per line; $120 total | AutoPay-discounted rate reported for four lines |
| Five under the promotion | $120 total for service; fifth line listed at $0 | Calculated from the reported four-line total and promotional fifth-line charge |
These are service-price figures reported in 2017, not a complete bill estimate. The report does not establish whether taxes, regulatory or activation fees, device financing, insurance, accessories, or prorated charges were waived or included. It also does not give a non-AutoPay price, so $120 should not be treated as a guaranteed total for an account that did not qualify for the discount. The reported pricing is the basis for the table and calculations.

What Unlimited Freedom included
The contemporary description of Sprint’s Unlimited Freedom plan listed unlimited data, talk, and text, HD video streaming, and 10 GB of hotspot data per line per month. Those are historical plan features as described in 2017; they should not be read as current Sprint or T-Mobile plan terms. The original coverage provides the feature list.
Who the offer suited—and the key trade-offs
The promotion’s value depended on having a use for five active lines. A household that needed only four still paid the four-line service price; the discount was an additional line, not a reduction in the cost of the first four. Before treating the advertised rate as a saving, a 2017 customer would have needed to consider:

- Eligibility: The report specifies new customers activating four Unlimited Freedom lines. It does not establish eligibility for existing customers adding a line, prepaid or business accounts, or customers activating fewer lines.
- AutoPay: The listed prices reflected a $5 AutoPay discount. The report does not state the price without it or explain what happened if an account later lost AutoPay eligibility.
- Equipment and account charges: “Free” referred to the fifth line’s advertised service charge, not a free phone. The report does not settle device financing, activation charges, insurance, taxes, fees, or first-bill proration.
- Coverage: A low service price would matter only where Sprint service worked for the family’s needs. Coverage is location-specific; the report offers no location-by-location performance evidence.
The available account of the promotion does not resolve whether the free-line benefit survived cancellation of one of the required paid lines, or whether that line could be transferred, upgraded, suspended, or replaced. It likewise does not establish terms for more than five lines or connected devices such as tablets, watches, or hotspots. Those details would have required confirmation in Sprint’s original promotion terms; they should not be assumed from the headline. The published report describes the core offer but not those account-level rules.
The announced 2018 rate change was not a clear promise about the free line
The 2017 report said Sprint had announced rates scheduled to change on June 30, 2018: $60 for line one, $40 for line two, and $30 each for lines three through five. That was a future rate change reported at the time, not evidence that the promotion remained available or that every promotional account was charged those rates. The report does not explain whether the fifth-line waiver would continue after the change or how the new structure would apply to promotional accounts. The contemporary account of the planned change leaves that interaction unresolved.
