The offers were real, but they were launch promotions from May 2024 and are expired—not current deals. Amazon and Best Buy each offered a $100 retailer gift card with a qualifying Pixel 8a preorder. The 128GB phone still cost $499 upfront; the gift card was a later reward, not an instant $100 price cut. These were U.S. offers.
What the Amazon and Best Buy offers included
Google opened Pixel 8a preorders on May 7, 2024, and said retail availability would begin May 14. Its launch price for the 128GB model was $499. Contemporaneous coverage reported the retailer offers below; Amazon’s stated deadline was May 19, 2024, or while supplies lasted. Google’s launch announcement, Engadget’s offer report, and Droid Life’s launch coverage described the promotions.

The 256GB Amazon price and reported color limitation, and the reported shipment timing and deadline, were covered by Engadget and the preserved Slickdeals offer listing. Best Buy’s gift card and Game Pass bundle were reported by Engadget; launch coverage of the activation incentive appears in 9to5Google’s offer comparison.
What the $100 reward meant for your budget
The standard Amazon and Best Buy offers did not lower the phone’s checkout price. A buyer paid $499 for the 128GB model before tax, then received a retailer-specific gift card. Calling the phone “$399” would be misleading: that is only an illustrative effective cost for someone who later uses the full $100 reward, not the cash price paid for the device.

The reward also was not cash-equivalent for every buyer. Amazon gift cards are subject to Amazon redemption restrictions; Best Buy gift cards are redeemable at U.S. Best Buy stores and BestBuy.com, have no expiration date or fees, and cannot be redeemed for cash under the retailer’s general terms. Which retailer was the better fit?
Amazon suited general Amazon spending
The Amazon offer made more sense if you already expected to buy eligible household goods, electronics, or other items through Amazon. It did not require the reported Best Buy carrier-activation step. The gift card was reportedly tied to shipment, rather than being available as an immediate checkout discount.

Best Buy suited electronics and store purchases
The Best Buy reward fit buyers who planned to purchase a case, charger, earbuds, or other electronics there, or who valued Best Buy pickup and retail support. The additional $100 activation discount was a separate conditional incentive. Eligibility could depend on choosing a supported carrier and completing its activation requirements; it should not be counted as part of the standard $100 gift-card offer.
Check return terms before relying on the reward
The preserved Amazon deal listing warned that returning a qualifying item could reduce the refund by the value of the special offer. Because return treatment depends on the retailer’s promotion terms, check those terms before buying or returning a phone; the historical listing is available here.

Google Store and Google Fi offered different kinds of incentives
Amazon and Best Buy were not the only launch options, but the alternatives were not interchangeable gift cards. Google Store reportedly offered $100 in Google Store credit after purchase, useful to someone intending to buy official Pixel accessories or other items from Google’s storefront. Google Fi reportedly offered up to $499 back through 24 monthly bill credits for buyers meeting the plan and purchase requirements. That was not $499 cash upfront: canceling service could end future credits and leave the remaining phone balance due. The launch alternatives and Fi terms were covered by 9to5Google and Google.
For a buyer who wanted an unlocked phone without an ongoing service commitment, a retailer gift card was simpler to evaluate. A buyer already considering Google Fi might have valued the larger bill-credit promotion more, but only after accounting for the service commitment and the risk of losing future credits.

Why the Pixel 8a drew launch interest
At launch, Google highlighted the Tensor G3 processor, a 120Hz display, IP67 water and dust resistance, wireless charging, and seven years of software, operating-system, security, and Pixel Feature Drop support. The 128GB model came in Bay, Obsidian, Porcelain, and Aloe; 256GB storage was new to the Pixel A-series at the time. These features help explain the phone’s appeal at its launch price, but they do not make the expired gift-card promotions current. Details are in Google’s Pixel 8a launch announcement.
Are these Pixel 8a preorder deals still available?
No. The Amazon deadline reported for the launch promotion was May 19, 2024, subject to supplies, and the preorder window began in May 2024. As of August 16, 2026, the cited launch coverage does not establish that any of these original rewards remain available. Do not treat the old promotion as a current offer or infer today’s Pixel 8a price from its $499 launch price. Check the retailer’s live product page and current terms before making a purchase.
