Spotify’s January 2026 U.S. price update raised all four major Premium tiers. Individual now costs $12.99 per month, Duo $18.99, Family $21.99, and Student $6.99, before any applicable tax. Existing subscribers are notified by email and receive a one-month period to cancel before the higher price reaches their account.
The change applies specifically to the United States, Estonia and Latvia—not automatically to every Spotify product or country. Check your account’s billing page and notice for the exact date your price changes.

Spotify’s current U.S. rates are listed on its Premium pricing page. The old-price comparisons come from reported U.S. pricing coverage by Tom’s Guide and What Hi-Fi. Your final charge can be higher where sales tax applies.
When will the higher price hit your account?
Spotify announced the update on January 15, 2026. That announcement date is not necessarily your billing-change date.

- Spotify sends affected subscribers an email explaining the new price.
- The account receives a one-month grace period to cancel before the increase takes effect.
- The new amount generally appears on the account’s next applicable billing date after that period. Billing cycles differ, so check the date shown in your account.
Spotify says trial users receive one month at the original price after the trial ends; the new recurring rate applies after that month. A free trial, a discounted first month and the regular renewal price are separate things, so read the offer’s end date carefully. The company’s price-change support page explains the timing.
What each Spotify option includes
Premium Individual — $12.99 per month
One Premium account with ad-free music, offline listening, full playback control and lossless audio promoted on the U.S. plan page. The page also lists 15 hours per month of audiobook listening from Spotify’s subscriber catalog for the account.
Premium Student — $6.99 per month
One verified student account. Eligibility must be maintained and may require re-verification. Spotify’s U.S. offer lists Hulu for eligible subscribers, subject to its terms; limited introductory offers may appear for qualifying users.

Premium Duo — $18.99 per month
Two separate Premium accounts for members who satisfy Spotify’s same-address requirement. The plan page lists 15 monthly audiobook hours for the plan manager. At the new rate, Duo costs $6.99 less per month than two Individual subscriptions ($25.98), before tax.

Up to six Premium accounts, with parental controls and support for younger listeners under Spotify’s stated terms. Members must meet Spotify’s household and address rules. At six fully participating members, the subscription works out to about $3.67 per person per month before tax; it is poor value for a single user or an ineligible group.
Spotify Free
The no-subscription-cost, ad-supported service. Moving from Premium generally removes benefits such as ad-free playback, offline downloads and unrestricted playback control. Confirm what changes for your account before switching.

Audiobooks Access
Spotify’s U.S. page lists Audiobooks Access separately from the main music Premium tiers. Do not assume it is another tier covered by the January Premium increase or that it includes the full Premium music experience.
Why Spotify says it raised prices
In its January 15 announcement, Spotify said occasional price updates reflect the value of the service, support continued innovation and help the company benefit artists. That is Spotify’s stated rationale; it does not establish that a particular dollar of the increase goes directly to artists or reveal the company’s exact cost structure.
The U.S. Premium page highlights features including personalized discovery, playlists, Blend, Jam, podcasts, video podcasts, audiobooks and lossless audio. Availability can vary by plan, device, account and market.

Should you keep, change or cancel Spotify?
Keep Individual when the ecosystem is worth $12.99
- You rely on Spotify’s playlists, recommendations, Wrapped, Blend, Jam or listening history.
- Moving your library and saved music would be inconvenient.
- Audiobook hours or lossless audio add value for your listening habits.
Choose Duo for two eligible household users
Duo is financially preferable to two Individual plans when both people genuinely live at the same address and want independent libraries and recommendations. It is not an unrestricted account-sharing product.
Choose Family only for a real qualifying household
Family can make sense with three or more eligible users, particularly when parental controls matter. Do not use it to share across separate households or pay for unused seats.
Use Student while you qualify
Student is the lowest-priced paid tier listed for the U.S., but verification and any bundled Hulu benefit depend on continuing eligibility and current terms.

Move to Free when Premium features are not worth the increase
Free is a sensible choice if ads are tolerable, you do not need offline listening and you can accept more limited playback controls.
Compare another service only on equivalent terms
Switching may be worthwhile if another subscription is already bundled with services you pay for, or if its catalog, discovery tools, audio priorities or device integration better fit your household. Compare an Individual plan with an Individual plan and a household plan with a household plan, including taxes, promotions and eligibility. Current competitor pricing was not established here, so avoid assuming another service is universally cheaper.
How to reduce your Spotify bill
- Open Spotify’s account page and select the plan-management or Change plan option to see alternatives available to your account and market.
- Check whether you qualify for Student pricing and complete any required verification.
- Consider Duo or Family only if every member meets the household rules and will use the service.
- If you are leaving, cancel before the next billing date shown in your account. Subscriptions billed through Apple, Google, a carrier or another partner may require cancellation through that provider.
- Choose Free if its ads and feature limits are acceptable.
- Do not treat an introductory promotion as the ongoing price. Record the date the promotion ends and the recurring amount that follows.
Important exceptions and fine print
- Regional scope: The January announcement names the United States, Estonia and Latvia. Prices in other countries require a local Spotify notice; U.S. figures should not be presented as a worldwide list. Spotify also issued a separate regional update in 2025: its August 2025 announcement.
- Existing versus new customers: Existing users receive notice and the stated grace period; new users see the current listed rate unless an eligible promotion applies.
- Taxes and billing dates: Displayed prices are monthly pre-tax rates, and the amount and date on your statement can differ by location and billing cycle.
- Gift cards: Spotify says lower-priced gift cards remain redeemable, but they can be used only for Premium Individual.
- Audiobook limits: Included hours are limited and may apply only to the plan manager, not every Duo or Family member.
- Plan availability: Spotify says alternative paid plans depend on the account and market. The official U.S. pages reviewed do not establish a universally available “Basic” plan.
- “All plans” wording: The supported claim is that all four major U.S. Premium tiers increased. Free, Audiobooks Access, legacy, promotional, regional and partner-billed products should not automatically be folded into that statement.
What the increase means for your budget
Individual subscribers pay $12 more per year before tax. Duo and Family subscribers each pay $24 more annually, while Student subscribers pay $12 more. The dollar increase is largest for households, but Student has the largest percentage increase because it starts from a lower base.
For a single listener, the decision is mainly whether Spotify’s features and library are worth $12.99 monthly or whether Free, a qualifying Student plan or another service provides enough value. For households, eligibility and the number of active users determine whether the higher Duo or Family price still beats separate subscriptions.
