Square Online is strongest for merchants already using Square in person, Ecwid adds commerce to an existing website, and Adobe Commerce is an enterprise project rather than a simple replacement.
The right choice depends on catalog complexity, payment economics, technical capacity, B2B needs, physical retail, and how much of your site and data you want to control. No platform is the universal winner.
Why consider a Shopify alternative?
Shopify is a capable hosted platform, but its economics and operating model do not suit every merchant.
- Payment economics: Shopify may charge an additional fee when you use a third-party payment provider. The amount varies by plan, country, and payment configuration; it is not one global rate.
- App costs: Subscriptions, advanced filtering, wholesale pricing, reviews, product options, localization, and specialist shipping can require several paid apps.
- Customization boundaries: You can customize themes and extend the platform, but Shopify controls the infrastructure, checkout architecture, APIs, and upgrade boundaries. Deeper checkout control is associated with higher-tier offerings (see Shopify’s pricing and plan details).
- Ownership: Open-source systems can give you control of hosting, code, and databases, but you also assume security, updates, backups, and performance work.
- Complex operations: Customer-specific B2B prices, purchase orders, approvals, multiple catalogs, large variant counts, multiple storefronts, or international operations may favor a more specialized platform.
- Physical retail: A business already running Square may value synchronized point-of-sale (POS), inventory, and payments more than Shopify’s broader app ecosystem.
- Content-first websites: A photographer, consultant, artist, or small lifestyle brand may prefer a site builder where content and visual presentation are the primary experience.
What counts as a Shopify alternative?
“Alternative” covers several different models, and they are not interchangeable:
#1 Best Overall
- Ergonomic Posture Correction: Designed to elevate your laptop to the perfect eye level, this adjustable laptop stand significantly reduces neck, shoulder, and spinal fatigue. Transform your desk into a healthier workstation, ideal for long hours of typing, Zoom meetings, or gaming.
- Unshakable Dual-Rod Stability: Unlike single-hinge models, our stand features a highly engineered dual-support rod mechanism. It perfectly distributes weight to ensure a 100% wobble-free typing experience, safely supporting heavy-duty devices up to 22 lbs (10kg).
- Advanced Thermal Cooling Panel: Maximize your device's performance. The unique geometric heat-vent design on the upper panel provides superior airflow compared to standard solid stands. This continuous heat dissipation prevents your laptop from thermal throttling and hardware damage during intensive tasks.
- Universal 10-16” Compatibility: A versatile computer riser that seamlessly fits all 10 to 16-inch laptops. Broadly compatible with MacBook Pro/Air, Dell XPS, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Chromebook, and large gaming laptops. The anti-slip silicone pads firmly grip your device and protect it from scratches.
- Foldable, Portable & Ready to Go: Maximize your productivity anywhere. The dual-foldable design allows the stand to collapse completely flat in seconds. Easily slip it into your backpack or briefcase, making it the ultimate portable office accessory for business trips, cafes, or hybrid work setups.
- Hosted ecommerce: BigCommerce runs the store infrastructure for you.
- Website builders with commerce: Wix and Squarespace combine visual site editing with a store.
- WordPress commerce: WooCommerce is an open-source plugin and operating stack.
- Embedded commerce: Ecwid adds a shop to an existing website, blog, or social presence.
- Enterprise commerce: Adobe Commerce supports large, integrated B2B and B2C operations.
- Open-source or headless platforms: PrestaShop, Shopware, Medusa, and Saleor offer technical control or API-first architectures, replacing SaaS fees with engineering and infrastructure work.

How to compare platforms before you move
Total cost
Model more than the advertised subscription. Include monthly or annual billing, payment processing, platform fees, hosting, themes, apps or extensions, email, shipping, tax and fraud tools, developer or agency time, migration, and ongoing support. Annual prices can require a commitment and may exclude tax.
Ease of use
Separate first-day setup from daily operations. Test product creation, theme editing, orders, shipping, tax, staff permissions, troubleshooting, and the support channel you would actually use.
Scalability
Ask about variants, search and filtering, traffic, order volume, inventory locations, API limits, multi-storefront support, international markets, and B2B pricing. A store that works with 100 products can become difficult at 10,000 SKUs, multiple warehouses, bundles, or customer-specific catalogs.
Payments
Check gateways available in your country, any platform fee for third-party gateways, recurring payments, local methods, buy-now-pay-later options, fraud and chargeback tools, and settlement timing. Always separate the platform subscription, platform transaction fee, and processor fee.
Design, content, and channels
Compare templates, drag-and-drop editing, blogging and SEO controls, landing pages, custom code, product-page flexibility, mobile editing, social and marketplace integrations, POS, local pickup, delivery, and inventory synchronization.
Ownership and portability
Determine whether you control the database and code, what exports are available, and whether product data, customers, orders, URLs, content, themes, and customizations can move elsewhere. Hosted themes and checkout logic are rarely fully portable.

Support and ecosystem
Evaluate documentation, community, agencies, apps or extensions, developer tools, 24/7 support, and enterprise account management. A low subscription can be expensive if every operational issue requires a specialist.
1. BigCommerce: best direct hosted replacement
BigCommerce is the strongest general-purpose alternative for a growing merchant that wants managed hosting but more commerce functionality built in. Its product areas include B2B commerce, multi-storefront, headless commerce, international commerce, product feeds, inventory, checkout, shipping, and analytics (see BigCommerce’s pricing and plan page).
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Pricing and payment qualification
The public pricing page checked August 18, 2026 listed Core at $39 per month ($29 monthly equivalent when billed annually), Growth at $105 ($79 annually), Scale at $399 ($299 annually), and Performance from $1,499 per month billed annually. The page also publishes trailing revenue or GMV thresholds and “open payment provider fee” percentages and caps. Therefore, “no transaction fees” is too broad: distinguish your processor’s fee, the BigCommerce plan fee, any open-payment-provider fee, and overage rules.
When it fits
- You need native B2B, multiple storefronts, or international capabilities.
- Your catalog and operations are outgrowing basic website builders.
- You want to reduce dependence on paid apps.
- You prefer hosted infrastructure and managed support.
When it does not
A very small seller may find the plan structure excessive. It is also a poor fit if you dislike revenue thresholds or need kernel-level control of checkout and order processing.
2. WooCommerce: best for ownership and flexibility
WooCommerce is an open-source WordPress commerce stack. Its core is free, has no platform subscription or revenue share, and supports broad payment choice (see WooCommerce pricing). You control hosting and code rather than accepting a single vendor’s operating boundaries.
The real cost
WooCommerce’s page checked August 18, 2026 estimates hosting for most stores at $25–$350 per month and extensions at $29–$299 per year per extension. Add a theme, processor fees, security monitoring, backups, caching or CDN, tax and shipping integrations, performance work, development, renewals, and emergency maintenance. Free software does not mean free operation.

Best use cases
- You already use WordPress and have reliable technical help.
- You need control over hosting, data, code, and payment providers.
- You can budget for updates, compatibility testing, and disaster recovery.
It is a poor choice for an owner who wants zero server responsibility or cannot tolerate plugin conflicts and update-related downtime. The trade-off is a potentially customizable stack instead of a predictable hosted bill.
3. Wix eCommerce: best for beginners and visual sites
Wix combines drag-and-drop site editing with ecommerce and suits a modest catalog, services, bookings, content, and products in one website. Its ecommerce product is described at Wix.com. Independent comparison coverage generally places Wix among the easier options for design and small stores, while noting limitations for complex inventory and advanced analytics (TechRadar’s website-builder comparison).
Wix prices and plan availability vary by country, billing term, and promotion. Use the US pricing selector for the current offer rather than relying on a global or third-party figure. Choose another platform when you need large catalogs, sophisticated B2B pricing, high-volume inventory, multi-storefront governance, or extensive commerce APIs.
4. Squarespace Commerce: best for design-led small stores
Squarespace is compelling when branding, content, blogging, memberships, appointments, or services matter as much as product selling. Templates and store administration are straightforward for small catalogs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSquarespace’s plan comparison checked August 18, 2026 showed a 2% online-store transaction fee on the lowest applicable commerce tier displayed and 0% on higher commerce tiers (see Squarespace pricing). Digital-content and membership fees are listed separately and can be higher. A 0% platform fee does not remove card-processing charges.
It is less suitable for complex inventory, advanced B2B, extensive warehouse workflows, highly localized international selling, or a large commerce-specific app ecosystem.

5. Square Online: best for physical retail and local commerce
Square Online is strongest when online and in-person sales belong in the same Square ecosystem. Square says its Free plan has no monthly fee or startup cost and charges processing when a sale occurs; products and sales can synchronize with Square Point of Sale (see Square Online).
That can simplify pickup, delivery, shipping, catalog management, and local operations for a restaurant, salon, shop, or service business. A card reader alone is not equivalent to complete omnichannel capability, so verify shared inventory, employee permissions, cross-channel returns, offline mode, location reporting, and multiple-location support.
Recommended Free Tools
Square is not simply a cheaper Shopify. International availability, enterprise catalog depth, and storefront customization may be narrower, and it is most attractive when you already use Square payments or POS.
6. Ecwid: best for adding a store to an existing website
Ecwid is an embedded commerce layer rather than a full site rebuild. Its pricing page says Starter supports up to 10 products, while Venture supports up to 100 and adds social selling, mobile management, automated tax calculations, custom checkout, reports, and app-market access (see Ecwid pricing).
Use it when your website, blog, or social presence is already working and you want to add a shop. Displayed prices vary by region and billing period. Choose a commerce-first platform if you need extensive checkout logic, large-scale merchandising, sophisticated multi-storefront operations, or deep storefront customization.

Pricing is quote-based. The meaningful cost is total ownership: implementation, integration, hosting, development, security, upgrades, and a support team. It makes sense with internal engineers or an experienced implementation partner, not for a first store selected on monthly subscription price.
Specialized alternatives
- PrestaShop: Open-source ecommerce for merchants wanting more dedicated commerce functionality than WordPress; hosting, modules, security, and development remain yours.
- Shopware: A mid-market and enterprise option, particularly relevant to complex catalogs and European operations; verify current pricing and implementation terms directly.
- Medusa and Saleor: API-first, headless platforms for engineering-led businesses building custom front ends and workflows.
- Sellfy: Focused on digital products, memberships, and creator commerce.
- Gumroad: Minimal-setup digital-product selling, not a complete physical-goods replacement.
These products can be excellent for a defined model but are poor default choices when you need a ready-to-run, general-purpose store.
Choose by business model
| If you need… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A hosted replacement for a growing store | BigCommerce | Native commerce breadth, B2B, multi-storefront, and international features |
| Maximum ownership and WordPress integration | WooCommerce | Open-source control and broad payment flexibility |

| Commerce on an existing website | Ecwid | Embedded store without rebuilding the site |
| B2B, enterprise integrations, or multiple brands | Adobe Commerce or BigCommerce | Choose Adobe for deep custom workflows; BigCommerce for managed SaaS |
| Digital products or lightweight creator sales | Sellfy or Gumroad | Specialized setup with less physical-commerce overhead |
Cost scenarios
New seller
For 20–50 products, low order volume, one market, no staff, and limited technical expertise, compare Wix, Squarespace, Square, and Ecwid first. WooCommerce is sensible only if WordPress or technical support is already in place. Your main financial question is the total monthly cost and the time required to launch.
Growing direct-to-consumer brand
For hundreds or thousands of products, paid acquisition, several staff, multiple shipping rules, and growing order volume, compare BigCommerce, Shopify, and WooCommerce. Include apps, payment fees, staff accounts, inventory, and operational reliability rather than subscription price alone.
Complex or enterprise merchant
For B2B and B2C catalogs, multiple countries or storefronts, ERP/CRM/PIM integrations, and approval workflows, shortlist BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, Shopify Plus, Shopware, or a headless architecture. Focus on implementation, integration, governance, support, and five-year total cost of ownership.
How to migrate from Shopify without an expensive failure
A CSV import is only one part of a migration. Complete this sequence before canceling Shopify:
- Inventory every product, variant, category, customer, order, review, discount, image, blog post, URL, integration, automation, subscription, tax rule, and shipping rule.
- Export the data you are entitled to export and map fields to the new platform. Confirm what cannot be transferred, such as passwords, checkout customizations, or app-specific records.
- Build a staging store and test products, inventory, tax, shipping, payment authorization, refunds, order notifications, staff permissions, and mobile checkout.
- Recreate SEO titles and descriptions, canonical settings, structured data, analytics, advertising pixels, email automations, and subscription logic.
- Prepare one-to-one redirects for changed URLs, retain image paths where possible, and verify indexing and analytics after launch.
- Obtain payment approval, connect domains and email, test pickup or delivery, and confirm fraud and chargeback workflows.
- Launch during a monitored window, keep Shopify available through the agreed rollback period, and cancel only after orders, reporting, and customer access are stable.
Bottom line: which Shopify alternative should you choose?
Choose BigCommerce for the closest hosted replacement when catalog complexity, B2B, international selling, or app reduction matters. Choose WooCommerce when control and portability justify hosting and maintenance work. Choose Wix or Squarespace when a small, visually led website matters more than advanced commerce operations. Choose Square Online when physical retail and POS synchronization drive the decision, and Ecwid when you are adding a store to an existing site. Reserve Adobe Commerce, Shopware, and headless systems for businesses that can fund engineering and implementation.
