The defensible income comes from design, sourcing, assembly, testing, setup, repairs, and support. Retail prices are transparent, while fees, labor, returns, taxes, shipping, and warranty work can consume an apparently attractive margin.
The lowest-risk approach is to take a deposit, agree on a written specification, buy parts for that order, charge separately for expertise and labor, document testing, and define support responsibilities before purchasing anything.
What “building computers for money” can mean
Labor-only assembly
The customer funds or supplies components and pays for compatibility checking, assembly, BIOS configuration, operating-system setup, testing, data transfer, delivery, or installation. This limits inventory risk but requires clear terms for defective or incompatible customer-owned parts.
Full-system sales
You buy parts, build the system, and sell it complete. Revenue per transaction can be higher, but cash is tied up in inventory and you assume greater exposure to returns, tax obligations, shipping damage, and warranty administration.

Customer-supplied parts
This can be profitable when the service scope is precise. State whether you test parts before assembly, who owns the risk of used or damaged components, and what disassembly or reassembly costs if a customer part fails.
Used-PC refurbishment
Buying used systems, testing them, upgrading them, and reselling them can lower the entry cost. It also creates more uncertainty: hidden defects, counterfeit storage, abused graphics cards, short remaining warranties, and extensive support work.
Business and workstation systems
Offices, creators, engineers, architects, schools, and nonprofits may pay for dependable configuration, deployment, documentation, backups, and support rather than cosmetic features. Requirements for software licensing, security, and downtime must be discussed at the beginning.
Repairs, upgrades, and maintenance
RAM and storage upgrades, GPU replacement, dust cleaning, BIOS updates, Windows migration, backup setup, troubleshooting, and data transfers can create repeat work without the capital burden of complete-system inventory.

Build guides, videos, livestreams, consultations, sponsorships, and affiliate links are separate businesses with slower, less predictable growth. Treat them as additional revenue streams, not guaranteed monetization.

What customers are actually paying for
Assembly is only one part of the outcome. Customers may be paying to avoid incompatible parts, poor-value purchases, noisy or unstable systems, incorrect firmware settings, difficult setup, and the uncertainty of finding help when something fails.
- Workload-specific design and parts selection
- One person accountable for the finished system
- Quiet operation, compact size, or upgradeability
- Correct BIOS, drivers, security settings, and software setup
- Data migration and local pickup, delivery, or installation
- Documented testing and a defined support process
Pricing becomes less commoditized when you sell a complete result—design, sourcing, configuration, testing, documentation, and support—instead of only “putting parts together.”

Pricing methods
- Fixed packages: Publish separate prices for consultation, standard assembly, advanced cooling, testing, OS setup, migration, delivery, and expedited work.
- Hourly pricing: Best for diagnosis and uncertain repairs. Set a minimum, billing increment, diagnostic charge, and approval threshold.
- Percentage markup: Easy to explain but disconnected from complexity, support, and warranty risk.
- Value-based pricing: Suitable for specialized workstations, deployment, and ongoing support where the customer is buying an outcome.
Why parts markup alone is fragile
Customers can compare component prices instantly, while large retailers may buy at volume and discount aggressively. A nominal 10% markup is not a 10% profit after fees, labor, returns, tax handling, and inventory depreciation. Expensive GPUs can increase cash requirements without increasing assembly time proportionally.
Show the approved parts list, source and price of each item, service charge, shipping, and applicable tax. Transparency makes your expertise—and its price—visible.
Start with customer-funded, order-first work
- Qualify the workload, budget, displays, noise preference, size, deadline, upgrade plans, Wi-Fi needs, and support expectations.
- Provide a written parts list with exact models, condition, substitutions, included software, services, exclusions, and a price-validity period.
- Collect a deposit sufficient to cover approved parts before ordering.
- Buy only after approval; retain receipts, serial numbers, and order confirmations.
- Inspect, assemble, test, and document the system.
- Collect the balance before delivery or handover.
Use a change-order policy covering price differences, restocking and return shipping, nonreturnable software, and labor already performed. Speculative inventory is best limited to common cables, fans, thermal paste, adapters, a demo system, or tested used equipment bought at a clear discount.
Skills, equipment, and testing
Compatibility and assembly
- Verify CPU socket and BIOS support, memory generation and capacity, case and radiator clearance, GPU dimensions and power connectors, PSU capacity, storage interfaces, lane sharing, and operating-system requirements.
- Use correct motherboard standoffs, cooler mounting, memory slots, fan orientation, front-panel connections, GPU retention, power routing, and ESD precautions.
- Inspect shipping damage and avoid excessive bends near modern GPU power connectors.
Configuration and verification
- Configure BIOS/UEFI, boot order, memory profiles, firmware, drivers, Secure Boot, TPM, power, and fan behavior.
- Record POST, component recognition, OS and driver installation, memory, CPU and GPU load, storage health, temperatures, fan behavior, network, audio, USB, display, Bluetooth, sleep, wake, and restart results.
Useful equipment includes quality screwdrivers, ESD protection, flashlight, thermal paste, USB installation media, a known-good PSU, spare RAM, a test GPU or integrated-graphics platform, storage-health and memory-test tools, a camera, labels, and packaging. Buy specialized diagnostic equipment only when job volume justifies it.
Testing reduces immediate risk; it cannot guarantee failure-free operation for months or years.

A professional build workflow
- Discovery: Identify applications, games, resolution, performance target, noise, portability, deadline, budget including tax and Windows, migration needs, and post-delivery support.
- Specification: Document part numbers, quantities, new or used condition, substitutions, delivery date, included and excluded services, deposit, cancellation, and warranty responsibility.
- Sourcing: Retain receipts, serial numbers, warranty terms, package photographs, and used-part test notes. Microsoft’s system-builder guidance warns against counterfeit or incomplete OEM components and suspicious software offers: Microsoft OEM System Builder Licensing FAQ.
- Intake: Match received models to the approved list, inspect seals and damage, and disclose used-part limitations.
- Assembly record: Log build date, technician, parts, BIOS and OS versions, test results, temperatures, serial numbers, and photographs.
- Handover: Provide the final parts list, receipts, warranty explanation, recovery instructions, activation information, maintenance guidance, support terms, and backup recommendation.
Taxes, records, and licensing in the United States
Requirements vary by state, county, and city. Confirm business structure, registration, sales-tax authority, resale-certificate rules, licenses, insurance, estimated taxes, and recordkeeping with the relevant authorities and a qualified adviser.

See IRS Publication 334. The same publication says sales tax collected and remitted to a government is not the seller’s gross receipts and lists a 2026 business mileage rate of 72.5 cents per qualifying mile.
IRS Publication 583 describes startup and organizational costs, including a possible $5,000 deduction for each category subject to phaseout when costs exceed $50,000. Confirm treatment for your facts.

Windows licensing
Microsoft says a new PC may receive Windows through OEM system-builder software preinstalled on the PC or through a retail product, and it may be sold without an operating system. OEM licensing is generally tied to the original PC, with specific motherboard-replacement exceptions. Do not reuse an OEM license from another computer, install unlicensed software, or sell “COA only” or unexplained cheap keys.

Warranties, returns, and support
Separate these obligations in writing:
- Manufacturer warranty on an individual component
- Your labor warranty
- Your warranty on the completed system
- Optional service contract
- Return or cancellation policy
- Customer-supplied parts and misuse exclusions
- Shipping damage and software support
The FTC says a business is not required to provide a written warranty, but a written warranty for a covered consumer product must meet applicable requirements, be available before purchase, and be designated “full” or “limited”: FTC Businessperson’s Guide to Federal Warranty Law.
A manufacturer may replace a defective part without paying for your diagnosis, removal, reinstallation, shipping, lost time, data loss, or unrelated damage. Define who performs troubleshooting and who pays for each step. Have an attorney review terms as the business scales.
Common failure scenarios
Specification changes after ordering
Require written approval and charge the resulting price differences, restocking, return shipping, nonreturnable items, and completed labor.
Failure during testing
Check connectors, seating, BIOS support, firmware, display output, cooler mounting, diagnostic indicators, extra standoffs, cable compatibility, GPU power delivery, and memory stability before declaring a part defective.
Shipping a completed PC
Price packaging, insurance, transit damage, heavy-item shipping, setup risk, and possible return shipping. Local pickup or delivery can be more profitable when installation and support are included.
Liquid cooling and tuning
Custom loops add leak, maintenance, installation, shipping, and warranty complexity. Treat them as a separately priced premium service. Record overclocking or undervolting settings and explain that one stable workload does not prove universal stability.
Data migration and used storage
Require a verified customer backup before migration and define responsibility for files, applications, email, browser profiles, passwords, encryption keys, and cloud synchronization. Health-check and securely erase used drives, disclose their condition, and never imply risk-free transfer.

- Can you identify a customer niche beyond “people who want a cheap PC”?

- Do you understand local tax, licensing, and insurance requirements?
- Can you support a failed system and document your process?
- Do your terms address deposits, changes, returns, customer parts, shipping, and data?
- Can you compete on specialization, trust, convenience, or support rather than lowest price?
