Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Indonesia have documented Olympic-gold reward programmes that reach six figures in U.S.-dollar terms. The headline amounts are not directly comparable: they use different currencies, cover different medal or event categories, may be taxable, and can come from a government, an Olympic committee or a sponsored scheme.
Documented Olympic gold bonuses
| Country or jurisdiction | Gold award | Payer or sponsor | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singapore | S$1 million for an individual Olympic gold medal | Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) Major Games Award Programme; Tote Board is the primary sponsor | The award is taxable, and 20% must be contributed to the athlete’s National Sports Association. |
| Singapore | S$3 million for an Olympic team-sport gold under the revised programme | SNOC Major Games Award Programme | The 2025–2028 review raised the team-sport award; individual Olympic payouts were unchanged. The programme has separate categories for individual events, team events and team sports. |
| Hong Kong | HK$6 million (reported as more than US$750,000) for a Paris 2024 gold | Hong Kong Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme, sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club | The figure was reported for the Paris 2024 scheme. |
| Taiwan | NT$20 million (reported as more than US$600,000), plus NT$125,000 per month for life | Taiwan government medal programme | The monthly payment is a lifetime stipend in addition to the one-time award. |
| Indonesia | Rp6 billion for each Paris 2024 gold medalist | Indonesian government | The Cabinet Secretariat reported the payment on August 15, 2024, after the Paris Games. |
Singapore: the largest individual award in its current programme
Singapore’s SNOC created the Major Games Award Programme (MAP) in the 1990s. Its current programme lists S$1 million for an individual Olympic gold medal. The athlete receives the award, but the amount is taxable and 20% must go to the relevant National Sports Association.
A review covering the 2025 Southeast Asian Games through the 2028 Olympics left individual Olympic payouts unchanged. It increased the Olympic team-sport award to S$3 million. That figure is a team-sport category award, not a statement that every athlete on a team personally receives S$3 million; the programme also distinguishes team events such as relays or doubles.
Singapore’s arrangement is not a direct government cash payment. Culture, Community and Youth Minister Edwin Tong said the MAP is a private award scheme managed by SNOC, with Tote Board as its primary sponsor, while public funding focuses on athlete development and infrastructure. He described the policy as leaving major-Games cash incentives to the private sector so the government can support a “broader base” of athletes.

Hong Kong’s Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme offered HK$6 million for a gold medal at Paris 2024. TIME reported that this exceeded US$750,000 at the time. The Hong Kong Jockey Club sponsors the scheme, so it should not be described as a standard direct government bonus.

Taiwan: a large payment plus lifetime income
Taiwan’s government programme offered NT$20 million for an Olympic gold medal, reported by TIME as more than US$600,000, together with a lifetime monthly stipend of NT$125,000. The recurring payment materially changes the comparison: the one-time award is only part of the potential value, and the eventual total depends on how long the athlete receives the stipend.
Indonesia: a government bonus after the Paris Games
Indonesia’s Cabinet Secretariat reported that President Joko Widodo handed over Paris 2024 bonuses on August 15, 2024. The government prepared Rp6 billion for each gold medalist. The same announcement listed Rp1.65 billion for a bronze medalist, Rp2.750 billion for coaches of gold medalists, Rp675 million for coaches of bronze medalists and Rp250 million for participating athletes.

A 2024 TIME comparison also identified Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Morocco, Italy, the Philippines, Hungary, Kosovo, Estonia and Egypt as countries that offered or pledged six-figure Olympic-champion rewards in the relevant comparisons. The coverage did not establish a single, current, directly comparable figure for each programme here. Amounts, eligibility rules and exchange rates can change, so those awards should be checked against the applicable national programme before being ranked.

The same comparison reported India’s government and Indian Olympic Association gold-medal awards at approximately US$90,000 and US$120,000, respectively. Those figures are separate reported awards, not a basis for assuming that every Indian champion receives a single combined payment of US$210,000.
How to compare Olympic bonuses without misleading results
Use local currency first
S$1 million, HK$6 million, NT$20 million and Rp6 billion are the authoritative programme figures. Dollar equivalents move with exchange rates, so any conversion must state the date and rate used. A ranking based on today’s exchange rate may differ from one published immediately after the Games.

Separate individual, team-event and team-sport awards
An individual gold is not the same category as a relay, doubles event or team-sport award. Singapore’s revised programme illustrates the distinction: individual Olympic payouts stayed the same while the team-sport category increased to S$3 million. The available programme description does not establish how that team-sport amount is divided among athletes.
Identify the payer
- Indonesia’s Paris 2024 bonus was announced and prepared by the national government.
- Singapore’s MAP is administered by SNOC and sponsored primarily by Tote Board rather than being a direct government cash programme.
- Hong Kong’s scheme is sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
- Taiwan’s cited medal programme is a government programme.
Check tax, deductions and recurring benefits
Singapore explicitly says its award is taxable and requires a 20% contribution to the athlete’s National Sports Association. Taiwan’s lifetime NT$125,000 monthly stipend is a recurring benefit, unlike a one-time bonus. Without a programme’s tax rules, deductions and payment schedule, a headline amount is not the athlete’s final take-home value.

Check the Olympic cycle and eligibility date
Medal schemes can be revised between Games. Singapore’s current review runs from the 2025 SEA Games through the 2028 Olympics, while Indonesia’s Rp6 billion figure was specifically announced for Paris 2024. Always attach the Games and programme period to a quoted amount.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do Olympians generally get paid by their government?
No universal rule exists. Some countries pay a government bonus, some use a national Olympic committee or a state-linked sponsor, and some combine several awards. The Olympic medal itself does not carry a standardized cash prize from the International Olympic Committee. Therefore, “the government pays Olympians” is accurate for Indonesia’s Paris 2024 bonus and Taiwan’s cited programme, but not for Singapore’s MAP or Hong Kong’s sponsored scheme.
What is the biggest Olympic gold bonus?
Singapore’s S$1 million is the clearest documented individual-Olympic-gold headline award in the programmes listed here, while Taiwan’s NT$20 million includes a separate lifetime stipend and Singapore’s revised S$3 million figure applies to a team-sport category. A definitive cross-country ranking in U.S. dollars would require a common conversion date and consistent treatment of taxes, team sharing and lifetime payments.
