Marko Elez, a 25-year-old DOGE engineer with prior work connected to SpaceX and X, resigned on February 6, 2025, after reporting tied him to a deleted X account containing racist, anti-Indian and pro-eugenics statements. Elon Musk said the next day that Elez would be brought back after Vice President JD Vance urged his rehiring and President Donald Trump supported that position. The available reporting confirms an announced rehiring, but not Elez’s definitive long-term employment status.

Who was Marko Elez?

Elez was a 25-year-old engineer working with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Reporting by TechCrunch and the Associated Press described prior work connected to Elon Musk’s companies, including X and SpaceX. He was also among DOGE personnel involved in access to Treasury payment operations or confidential payment records, making the controversy a security and oversight issue as well as a personnel dispute.

What did the deleted account say?

Reporting linked Elez to a since-deleted X account. The Associated Press quoted several posts attributed to the account:

  • “I was racist before it was cool.”
  • “You could not pay me to marry outside of my ethnicity.”
  • “Normalize Indian hate.”

The account was also reported to advocate a “eugenic immigration policy.” The statements were presented as the reason the White House was asked about Elez’s connection to the account.

Why did he resign?

TechCrunch reported on February 6, 2025, that Elez resigned after the Wall Street Journal questioned the White House about the account and his connection to it. The resignation followed publication of the reported posts and came while DOGE personnel were under scrutiny for their work inside Treasury systems.

Why did Treasury access make the episode more serious?

The reporting said Elez had access to Treasury payment systems or confidential payment records. A February 7 Massachusetts court complaint also referred to his resignation after reports about racist social-media posts while describing broader litigation over DOGE activity.

That access did not establish that Elez misused payment data. It did mean that questions about vetting, authorization, audit trails and protection of sensitive federal information were part of the public controversy. The episode therefore combined alleged discriminatory speech with concerns about who could reach high-value government payment infrastructure.

What happened after the resignation?

Date Development What the reporting establishes
February 6, 2025 Resignation reported TechCrunch reported that Elez stepped down after questions about the deleted X account and its posts.
February 7, 2025 Rehiring announced The Associated Press reported that Musk said Elez would be brought back after JD Vance called for his return and Trump endorsed that position.
February 7, 2025 Separate coverage and court filing The Washington Post reported the resignation and announced rehiring; a Massachusetts complaint referenced the resignation in litigation concerning DOGE activity.

Musk’s response, as quoted by the Associated Press, was: “He will be brought back. To err is human, to forgive divine.” The sources establish that announcement, not a complete later employment record. They do not definitively show whether Elez remained employed by DOGE over the long term.

Did Elon Musk rehire him?

Musk publicly said on February 7 that Elez would be brought back. Vance had urged rehiring, and Trump backed that position. Because the cited reports do not document Elez’s subsequent employment history, the most precise answer is that a rehiring was announced, while the final duration and status of his employment are not established by those sources.

What is confirmed—and what is not?

  • Confirmed by the cited reporting: Elez’s age and engineering role; prior connections to SpaceX and X; the February 6 resignation; the quoted posts attributed to a deleted account; reported access to Treasury payment systems or confidential records; and Musk’s February 7 statement that Elez would return.
  • Not established by that reporting: that Elez used Treasury data improperly, that the account’s posts led to any criminal finding, or that he remained employed for a specific later period.
