You can update a PayPal phone number from Settings → Phone Numbers on the website, or from Profile → Account Info → Phone Numbers in the app. Add and confirm the replacement number before deleting the old one whenever possible. Menu names can vary by country, account type, and app version.
Change your PayPal phone number on the website
- Sign in at PayPal.
- Open Settings.
- Find Phone Numbers.
- Select Change beside the number you want to replace.
- Enter the new number and select Update Number.
- Complete any text-message or identity verification PayPal requests.
- Check that the replacement appears in your list. If shown, choose Set as Primary, then Confirm.
These labels come from PayPal’s U.S. instructions; regional interfaces may use slightly different wording. See PayPal’s phone-number help page.
Change it in the PayPal mobile app
- Open the PayPal app and sign in.
- Tap the Profile icon.
- Tap Account Info, then Phone Numbers.
- Tap the number you want to edit.
- Enter the replacement number and tap Done.
- Enter the confirmation code if PayPal sends one.
PayPal periodically rearranges its app. If your screen differs, open the profile or account-information area and look for Phone Numbers. The current regional instructions are at PayPal’s app help page.
Add and confirm the new number before removing the old one
The safer sequence is to keep both numbers temporarily:

- Choose + Add New or Add a phone number.
- Enter the new number and complete the SMS confirmation.
- Set it as primary if PayPal offers that option.
- Test a fresh sign-in or verification challenge.
- Only then remove the old number.
PayPal says a number can be removed only when at least two phone numbers are associated with the account. Removing the only working number first can leave you unable to complete a security challenge.
Confirm the number and make it primary
PayPal may text a confirmation code after you add or change a number. Enter it in PayPal rather than replying to the message. PayPal states that the code expires 15 minutes after it is issued. If the website lists the new number but it is not primary, use Set as Primary and then Confirm.

If you no longer have the old number
You can still sign in
Update or add the replacement immediately through Settings → Phone Numbers (or the corresponding app path). Complete any identity check PayPal presents before signing out, and review your two-step-verification settings.
You cannot sign in
The phone-number settings are unavailable until access is restored. PayPal warns that two-step-verification codes may continue going to the old number. Use its account-recovery guidance. If recovery fails, use the official Contact Us page and be prepared to verify ownership. There is no guaranteed bypass that works without account verification.

Do not pay an unofficial “recovery” service or give a password, one-time code, full card number, or identity document to an unsolicited caller or social-media account.
PayPal still sends codes to the old number
Common reasons include an unconfirmed replacement, the old number remaining primary, two-step verification still targeting it, or a stale session. Work through this order:

- Sign out of PayPal on other devices.
- Sign in again through the official PayPal website or app.
- Open Settings → Phone Numbers and verify that the new number is saved and confirmed.
- Set the new number as primary when that control is available.
- Review Security and two-step-verification settings and update their verification method.
- If you are locked out, stop repeatedly requesting codes and use account recovery.
Changing the profile number does not necessarily migrate every security setting automatically.

- Check the number, country code, and formatting.
- Wait briefly before requesting another code; an earlier code may expire or become unusable.
- Check whether your phone or carrier blocks short-code or automated texts.
- Restart the phone and temporarily review spam or message-filtering settings.
- Try the website if you started in the app, or the app if you started on the website.
- Contact PayPal if messages still do not arrive.
PayPal’s help guidance says a carrier may need to enable short-code text messaging for certain verification texts; see its SMS troubleshooting page.

Other account questions
Can I use the same number on another PayPal account?
PayPal may reject a number that is already associated with another account. Do not create duplicate accounts or alter an account you do not control; contact PayPal support for an account-specific resolution.
Does changing the number change my email or account?
No. Updating the phone number does not inherently change your login email, balance, payment methods, transaction history, or account type. Review security settings separately.
Is there a fee?
PayPal’s phone-number instructions describe an account-setting change and do not state a fee for it.
