Do not install a PhonePe APK sent by SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, a browser pop-up or an unknown website. A sideloaded APK can be legitimate in some circumstances, but an unofficial “PhonePe” package can request SMS, Contacts, Accessibility or Notification access, intercept OTPs, place screen overlays and expose banking data. Use the official PhonePe listing reached through PhonePe’s website or an authorised store instead.

What a fake PhonePe APK does

An APK is an Android Package File. Installing one outside Google Play, Indus Appstore or another authorised channel bypasses store checks. PhonePe describes a common scam chain: an unsolicited message or link leads to an APK download; the app asks for excessive permissions; it may crash or show little while malicious code runs in the background; then it attempts OTP interception, screen overlays, banking access or deletion of security alerts.

Google treats internet-sideloaded apps from browsers, messaging apps and file managers as higher risk when they request permissions such as RECEIVE_SMS, READ_SMS, NOTIFICATION_LISTENER or Accessibility access, because those capabilities are frequently abused for financial fraud. See Google’s Play Protect warning guidance.

How to tell whether the app is fake

Check where the link came from

  • Reject APK links delivered through SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, social media or a third-party “support” chat.
  • Open the brand’s website yourself and use its “Get our app” link, as Delhi Police advises: mobile-app safety guidance.
  • Keep Android’s Install Unknown Apps permission disabled unless you have a specific, trusted reason to sideload.

Inspect the listing and permissions

  • Compare the developer name, spelling, logo, screenshots, description, download count, publication date, update date and review quality.
  • Misspelled developer names, generic branding, poor grammar, very few reviews or large numbers of identical five-star reviews are warning signs.
  • Stop if an alleged payment app requests SMS, Contacts, Accessibility or Notification access without a clear, necessary explanation.

There is no verified current PhonePe APK filename, package name, checksum or “latest version” number in the official material available for this guide. Do not trust a version number or hash posted by an unknown download site.

What Play Protect warnings mean in 2026

Read the exact warning rather than assuming every alert has the same meaning. Google’s warning-string documentation (updated May 19, 2026) includes:

Warning category Displayed message
Phishing “This app is fake. It can steal your personal data, such as banking info and passwords.”
Trojan “This app is fake. It tries to take over your device or steal your data.”
Social engineering “This app looks like another app and can trick you into exposing personal data, misusing your device, or installing other apps.”
Sensitive-data block “This app can request access to sensitive data. This can increase the risk of identity theft or financial fraud.”
Unknown app “This app is unknown to Play Protect. To protect yourself and others, send it to Google for a security check.”
Older Android target “This app was built for an older version of Android and does not include the latest privacy protections.”

The older-target message concerns an app whose targetSdkVersion is more than two API levels below the current Android API level; it is not, by itself, proof that the app impersonates PhonePe. Google’s warning-guidance page was updated July 29, 2026.

Scan and remove it safely

  1. Do not open the APK again or enter a UPI PIN, OTP, password or card details.
  2. Disconnect mobile data and Wi‑Fi. Delhi Police recommends taking the phone offline immediately after suspected installation.
  3. Run Play Protect: Google Play Store → Profile picture or initial → Play Protect → Settings → turn on “Scan apps with Play Protect” → Back → Scan.
  4. If Play Protect identifies the app, tap Uninstall. If normal removal fails, revoke its Accessibility, Notification access, Device administrator and “Install Unknown Apps” permissions first, then uninstall it from Android Settings.
  5. From a different, trusted device if possible, change banking, email and payment-app passwords. Ask your bank or payment provider to monitor or freeze activity.
  6. Run a reputable device-security scan and watch bank, email and social accounts for unfamiliar logins, password resets or transactions.

Uninstalling alone is not a complete response: the app may already have viewed messages, notifications or credentials.

If money or credentials were exposed

  • Contact your bank and payment provider immediately; request transaction monitoring, holds or account protection.
  • In India, report the incident at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930. Preserve the APK link, sender details, screenshots, app name, permissions and transaction records. The portal’s “Report Suspect” function accepts website URLs, WhatsApp or Telegram identifiers, phone numbers, email IDs, SMS headers/numbers and social-media URLs.
  • For PhonePe, registered users can use PhonePe app → Help → Account security issue-Report Fraudulent activity. For a disputed transaction, PhonePe also documents Help → have an issue with the transaction.
  • Use support.phonepe.com rather than phone numbers found in search results. PhonePe warns against unverified numbers claiming to be support. Its safety material lists 80-68727374 and 022-68727374 as company numbers as of September 2025; verify current details on the live support site before calling.

Payment rules that stop common follow-up scams

  • You never enter a UPI PIN to receive money.
  • PhonePe says it will not ask for your UPI PIN, OTP, CVV, debit- or credit-card details or other confidential information.
  • A payment SMS, screenshot, pop-up or sound is not proof of credit. Confirm in the official payment app or bank account.
  • PhonePe Protect uses the Department of Telecommunications’ Financial Fraud Risk Indicator: transactions linked to “Very High FRI” mobile numbers are declined, while “Medium FRI” numbers trigger a warning before proceeding. Details are in PhonePe’s announcement.

Claims to ignore

  • “Every APK is fake.” False. APKs have legitimate uses; the danger is an untrusted source and bypassed store safeguards.
  • “Any Play Protect warning proves a fake.” Too broad. Play Protect distinguishes phishing, trojan, spyware, riskware, uncommon, unknown and older-target categories.
  • “Removing the app finishes cleanup.” No. Disconnect, change credentials, scan, contact financial providers and monitor accounts.
  • “A UPI PIN is needed to receive funds.” False.
