Buy antivirus software from the vendor’s official website or the official Apple App Store or Google Play listing. Before paying, check whether your devices already have adequate built-in protection, then compare the exact operating systems covered, useful features, device limits, and—especially—the renewal price. Many Windows 11 users can start with Microsoft Defender at no extra cost; a paid suite makes sense when its extra services or household management solve a real need.
Do you need to buy antivirus software?
For many Windows users, Microsoft Defender Antivirus, Windows Firewall, and Windows’ built-in reputation and web protections provide a strong baseline. In AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 test, Microsoft Defender received full protection and usability scores and 5.5 out of 6 for performance. That is a dated result for Windows 11, not a guarantee about every device or a ranking for Mac and mobile products. See AV-TEST’s Windows home-user results.
Paid antivirus is optional, not a universal requirement. Consider it when you need cross-platform coverage, centralized family management, parental controls, a VPN, password management, cloud backup, identity alerts, or dedicated support—and when the plan’s terms and price make sense. A feature list is not proof of better malware protection, and a bundled service may duplicate something you already pay for.
When built-in protection may be enough
- You have a current Windows PC and ordinary browsing, email, and work needs.
- You do not need the premium services or family controls in a paid suite.
- You keep Windows, browsers, and applications updated; use unique passwords and multifactor authentication; avoid pirated software; and keep backups.
When a paid product may add value
- You manage several devices or operating systems and want one account or family dashboard.
- You will actually use included services such as parental controls, a VPN, backup, or identity monitoring.
- You want a different interface, support arrangement, or security controls after checking current independent test results.
Do not install two full-time real-time antivirus products on the assumption that more engines mean more protection. They can interfere with one another, slow the device, or create duplicate alerts. If you add a product, follow its installation guidance on how it handles Microsoft Defender; a second-opinion scanner that runs on demand is different from another always-on engine.

Where to buy antivirus safely
1. The vendor’s official website
This is usually the clearest place to compare current plans, supported platforms, device limits, renewal terms, refunds, and account management. Type the vendor’s known address yourself or follow a link from a trusted source, and check the domain carefully before entering payment details. HTTPS alone does not prove that a site belongs to the vendor: a scam site can also use an encrypted connection.
2. Official app stores for mobile apps
For an iPhone or Android phone, use the Apple App Store or Google Play listing and verify the developer name and the app’s link to the vendor’s privacy policy. Do not expect an iPhone security app to scan the entire device like a desktop antivirus. Apple’s platform restrictions mean these apps generally focus on areas such as phishing links, unsafe websites, privacy, identity, or Wi-Fi features. Android products may offer different scanning and protection functions; check the listing and plan details for the features you need.
3. Reputable retailers
A known retailer may sell legitimate boxed or digital licenses, but inspect the listing before purchase. Check that the code is new, valid for your country and operating system, covers the right number of devices, and is not restricted to renewals. Extremely cheap keys, “lifetime” offers, sellers who ask you to contact them outside the retailer, and listings without clear refund terms are warning signs.
Avoid unofficial downloads and scareware
Do not download an installer from a generic software portal, cracked-software site, unsolicited email, or pop-up ad. A search advertisement is not automatically the vendor’s real page. Close alerts that claim your browser or Windows has found dozens of infections and tell you to call a phone number or install remote-control software. A legitimate warning should not require trusting an unknown caller.

Choose the right product category
Built-in or free protection
For a Windows PC, Microsoft Defender is a reasonable starting point for users who want core protection without buying a separate product. Free third-party products can also be an option, but review what is limited and how the vendor funds the free tier: it may use upgrade prompts, advertising, or data practices you should understand. Free protection may not include cross-device management, premium support, identity alerts, backup, or a VPN.
Standalone antivirus
A standalone product suits someone who mainly wants malware, ransomware, phishing, and web protection without a large bundle. Check the plan’s device count and whether it covers your Mac or phone as well as Windows. The least expensive tier may cover just one device, and its renewal price may be much higher than its introductory offer.
Full security suite
A suite can be convenient for a household that will use several included tools, such as parental controls, a VPN, a password manager, backup, or identity monitoring. Compare each service on its own merits: inclusion does not make it best-in-class. More features can also mean more notifications, upselling, and higher renewal costs.
Microsoft 365 security bundle
Microsoft Defender for Individuals is a separate Microsoft 365-linked offering with protection across Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. Microsoft’s U.S. page listed Microsoft 365 Personal at $99.99 per year and Family at $129.99 per year when accessed in August 2026; the subscriptions also include Office applications and OneDrive storage. This may be useful if those services already matter to you, but it is not the same as the built-in Microsoft Defender Antivirus baseline in Windows. Confirm current plan details and price on Microsoft’s official page.

Which features are worth comparing?
Core protection and usability
Look for real-time malware protection, ransomware safeguards, phishing and malicious-site blocking, protection against dangerous downloads, automatic updates, and on-demand scanning. Check how quarantine and recovery work. Do not judge protection by the length of a feature list: independent results, usability, and compatibility matter too.
Operating systems and device limits
Check the minimum supported version of every operating system in your household, including Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS/iPadOS. Confirm whether Chromebooks are supported or merely work with a browser extension. A product that lists four platforms may offer different features on each. Also find out whether the device allowance means simultaneous devices, registered devices, or total installations. Norton’s AntiVirus Plus page, for example, lists Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, while features and device allocation vary by plan: check the current Norton plan details.
Performance impact
Security software runs in the background, so system impact matters, especially on older or low-powered hardware. AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 performance test measured consumer products on an up-to-date 64-bit Windows 11 system; lower performance impact is preferable in that test. Results may differ with older hardware, storage type, file volume, gaming or video workloads, cloud-sync apps, extensions, scan schedules, and product settings. Read the April 2026 performance report.
VPNs, password managers, and privacy
Before paying extra for a VPN, check for data caps, server restrictions, device limits, and separate privacy terms. A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN server and can change the apparent source IP; it does not make you anonymous or stop every phishing attack. A password manager can help you use unique passwords, but it does not replace multifactor authentication. Review vendor data collection and browser extensions, too.

Family and identity features
Confirm how many adults and children are covered, which platforms support parental controls, and whether those controls include the limits your family needs. Identity monitoring typically alerts you to potential issues and may assist with recovery; it cannot guarantee prevention. Read the eligibility, enrollment, exclusions, and limits for any identity reimbursement or insurance, and check whether coverage applies to every family member or only the main account holder.
How to read antivirus test results
Independent tests help narrow a shortlist, but their results apply to specific products, versions, dates, and operating systems—not to every device a vendor supports.
- Protection: How effectively the product detected or blocked threats within that test’s scenarios.
- Performance: The measured effect on ordinary computer tasks, which is a separate question from detection.
- Usability: False alarms and whether legitimate files or websites were wrongly flagged.
- Real-world protection: Performance against simulated threats encountered through everyday web use.
- Malware protection: Performance against malicious files under the test’s stated conditions.
In AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 results, Microsoft Defender scored strongly, and Bitdefender Total Security, ESET Security Ultimate, and Norton were among the products receiving full or near-full scores. Several products can perform well; one test does not establish a permanent winner or predict macOS and mobile results. Review the dated results and tested products.
AV-Comparatives tested 20 consumer products in its February–May 2026 real-world protection test, including Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, ESET, Malwarebytes, McAfee, and Norton. Its guidance is to weigh factors such as price, ease of use, compatibility, and support alongside test results. See its test overview and detailed results.

For Norton’s listed offers, the first-year price is not the long-term cost. Before purchase, record the introductory and renewal prices, device allowance, subscription term, tax treatment, whether auto-renewal is selected, and the refund window. Save the checkout summary and note the renewal date. If you turn off auto-renewal, check whether access continues until the end of the paid term or ends sooner.
Microsoft 365 makes most sense when you also value Office and OneDrive; otherwise, compare the cost of those services you would actually use with a simpler antivirus option. Similarly, do not pay for a suite’s VPN, backup, or password manager if you already have suitable services and the included versions do not improve on them.
Pick by household situation, not by a universal winner
| Your situation | Sensible starting point | Check before deciding |
|---|---|---|
| One current Windows 11 PC and ordinary use | Microsoft Defender plus good security habits | Whether you need any paid features beyond its baseline protection. |
| Several Windows devices and a family | A multi-device suite with a family dashboard | Renewal cost, actual device limits, and parental-control support. |
| Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone in one household | A documented cross-platform subscription | Feature differences by platform and whether each device is covered by one plan. |
| You want a VPN, password manager, and identity alerts | Compare a suite with a Microsoft 365 bundle, if Office and OneDrive are useful too | Caps, terms, coverage limits, and overlap with services you already use. |
| Older or low-powered computer | Shortlist products with strong performance results for your operating system | Test impact on your own workloads before committing, where a trial is available. |
| You only want malware protection | Built-in protection or a standalone antivirus | Whether phishing and ransomware protection meet your needs. |
| A device may already be persistently infected | Offline scanning, professional help, or system recovery | Secure accounts and finances from a separate clean device; a subscription alone may not remove a persistent compromise. |
Buy and set up the product carefully
- Check the plan: Confirm the vendor, exact product, supported operating systems, number of devices, term, first-year price, renewal price, and refund terms.
- Review checkout: Inspect whether add-ons are preselected and whether automatic renewal is on. Save the order summary and record the cancellation route and renewal date.
- Use the vendor account or official app store: Sign in or create an account, then download the installer from the account page or vendor’s official site. For mobile, verify the app developer.
- Avoid conflicts: Follow the product’s instructions about removing other third-party real-time security software and Microsoft Defender. Do not run two full-time antivirus engines together.
- Update and scan: Install the current application and allow it to update its components and threat definitions. Run an initial scan.
- Review what is enabled: Check web, phishing, ransomware, and privacy settings. Install only the extensions or companion apps you want.
- Protect the account: Enable multifactor authentication for the vendor account if offered, and keep the operating system, browser, applications, and router firmware updated.
Menu names and installation flows vary by vendor and platform, so follow the current instructions linked from the official product account rather than assuming one universal path.
What antivirus cannot do
Antivirus can help detect or block malicious software and unsafe activity, but it cannot make every decision safe. It does not guarantee that a user will avoid approving a fraudulent payment, entering credentials on a convincing phishing page, or sharing access with a scammer. It cannot compensate for reused passwords, unpatched software, or the absence of an independent backup. Use multifactor authentication, verify payment requests through a separate channel, update software, and keep backups that malware cannot easily alter.
If you suspect an active intrusion or data theft, disconnect the affected device from the network. From a clean device, change important passwords and contact your bank or card issuer if financial details may be exposed. If normal scanning fails, use a vendor rescue environment or offline scan; back up only checked personal files, not unknown executables. A severe or persistent infection may require an operating-system reset or reinstall. On a business device, contact IT or an incident-response professional rather than installing random cleanup tools. Malware removal, account takeover, and identity theft are related but separate problems.
