The best omnichannel POS depends on how you sell, not on a universal ranking. Shopify POS fits ecommerce-first brands; Square for Retail suits smaller merchants seeking a clear entry point; Lightspeed handles deeper inventory and multi-location work; Clover emphasizes hardware and payments; NCR Voyix and Oracle Retail Xstore target enterprise operations; and NewStore is designed for mobile-first, digitally native brands.
These are seven representative platforms, not like-for-like products. A genuinely omnichannel system connects products, prices, promotions, inventory, customers, orders, returns, payments and fulfillment across store, web, mobile and marketplace channels.
Quick comparison
| Platform | Best for | Ecommerce approach | Inventory and scale | Payment flexibility | Public pricing signal | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify POS | Ecommerce-first brands | Native Shopify ecosystem | Strong for standard DTC and specialty retail; advanced needs may require apps | Shopify Payments is the simplest path; processor choice can be limited | Shopify plans from $39/month; POS Pro $89/month per location when billed yearly | Advanced store functions and total cost rise with plans, apps and hardware |
| Square for Retail | Small and midsize retailers | Connected Square Online setup | Good entry-level inventory and purchasing; less suited to complex enterprise merchandising | Square-centered processing | Free for one location; Plus $89/month per location; Premium custom | Complex catalogs, global entities and processor independence can be limiting |
| Lightspeed Retail | Inventory-intensive specialty retail | Built-in ecommerce and integrations | Deep purchasing, vendors and multi-location workflows | Confirm current payment terms and processor options | Quote and market dependent; verify current offer | More implementation and cost than a basic tablet POS |
| Clover Retail | Hardware- and payments-led merchants | Apps and connected commerce options | Varies by configuration and apps | Terms can depend on acquiring bank or reseller | Bundles and plans displayed online; final terms vary | Commercial offer is not uniform across providers |
| NCR Voyix | Large, high-volume or multinational retailers | Enterprise unified-commerce platform | Enterprise store operations, loyalty, analytics and integrations | Enterprise project terms | Quote-based | Requires formal implementation and integration resources |
| Oracle Retail Xstore | Complex enterprise store operations | Oracle Retail ecosystem | Deep merchandising, promotions, inventory and global integration | Enterprise project terms | Quote-based | High implementation burden and limited price transparency |
| NewStore | Mobile-first, digital-native and international brands | Cloud-native connected operations | Mobile POS, clienteling and endless aisle for modern specialty retail | Enterprise project terms | Quote-based | Needs integration maturity and is not a low-cost starter POS |
Pricing signals above are U.S. figures observed on vendor pages around August 16, 2026. They are not quotes; taxes, processing, hardware, contracts, locations and add-ons can change the total.
What makes a POS genuinely omnichannel?
Multichannel means selling through several channels. Omnichannel means those channels share operational data so the customer and staff experience continues across them. Unified commerce is a stronger architecture in which commerce, customer, inventory, order, payment and promotion data are connected with minimal duplication.

- ✔【 10-point multi-touch capacitive touch screen 】- Recognize up to ten simultaneous touch points with precision and accuracy. Allows for seamless multi-user interaction and supports a wide range of gestures, including pinch-to-zoom, swipe, and rotate. When evaluating a platform, require evidence for each of these capabilities:
- One product catalog and SKU or variant structure
- Real-time or explicitly documented near-real-time inventory synchronization
- Customer profiles and purchase history shared across channels
- Consistent prices, discounts, promotions and gift cards
- Buy online, pick up in store, ship-from-store and assisted “endless aisle” ordering
- Cross-channel returns, exchanges and order lookup
- Multi-location visibility, transfers, reservations and stock counts
- Mobile checkout, clienteling and role-based staff permissions
- Unified reporting for stores, ecommerce, marketplaces and social channels
- APIs, webhooks, audit trails and a defined offline mode
An ecommerce connector alone does not prove omnichannel operation. Ask whether the connection is native, first-party but separately licensed, certified through a partner, custom API work or an app with its own fees and failure points.
1. Shopify POS: best for ecommerce-first omnichannel brands
Shopify POS is the natural starting point when the online store, checkout, catalog and customer-acquisition engine already run on Shopify. Store staff can work from the same commerce environment as the web channel, with shared products, orders and customer records.
Where it fits
- Apparel, beauty, lifestyle, specialty and direct-to-consumer brands opening physical locations
- Retailers wanting Shopify to remain the online system of record
- Brands using online orders for store pickup, returns or assisted selling
Costs and trade-offs
Shopify’s pricing page lists plans starting at $39 per month. POS Pro is listed at $89 per month per location when billed yearly, in addition to the underlying Shopify plan. The page also shows an example in-person rate of 2.6% + $0.10; actual rates depend on plan, country and payment setup. Total cost can include apps, card readers, registers, shipping or fulfillment services. See Shopify POS pricing and Shopify POS.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Best and poor fit
Choose it when ecommerce merchandising and customer data are central. It is a weaker fit when you need specialized purchasing, complex merchandising or broad processor choice out of the box, or when you want POS independent of Shopify’s wider stack.
2. Square for Retail: best accessible option for smaller retailers
Square emphasizes quick onboarding, integrated payments and a broad small-business ecosystem. Its retail page lists a free plan for one location, Plus at $89 per month per location and a custom Premium tier. Plus includes advanced inventory tools, barcode labels, purchase orders, vendor management and cost-of-goods-sold reporting.

- [Cost Savings]: As a cash register display without a system, the MUNBYN 19-inch POS touch screen can greatly save your costs. Compared with POS machines with systems, you only need to purchase this touch screen and match it with a suitable computer/mini PC to complete the construction of the cashier system. This is ideal for small and medium-sized businesses or personal purchases, enabling an efficient checkout process with a low investment
- [Widely Compatible]: MUNBYN 19-inch POS touch screen monitor is widely compatible and can be used with various operating systems. It supports multi-touch for Windows 11/10 to ensure you can enjoy the most advanced touch experience; at the same time, it also supports single-touch for Windows 7/XP to meet your needs for older systems. If you are using Windows 7 or XP, please DM us to obtain the upgrade tool APP for firmware upgrade before using it.
- [HDMI/VGA Connectivity] Compared to POS screens that only support VGA connection, using an HDMI connection can achieve better image quality and higher resolution. For cashier scenarios, MUNBYN touchscreen monitor can provide a clearer and more detailed image display, helping to improve work efficiency and accuracy. 2 linking methods can connect more devices to meet different needs
- [True Full-Flat Design] MUNBYN POS monitor uses a true full-flat design to bring you a more excellent user experience. Unlike traditional touch screens, since there are no raised borders, the surface of the touch screen is completely flat, leaving no dead corners and holes, making it easy to clean daily
- [High Quality & Supports VESA Mount]The metal body makes the POS touch screen monitor more sturdy and lasts longer compared to the plastic body. This means you can use the device for a long time without frequent replacement or repairs, saving time and costs. In addition, this POS screen supports VESA standard brackets, which can be flexibly adjusted according to the height needs of different cashiers
Where it fits
- Single-location and small multi-location retailers
- Businesses that value a low-cost entry point and self-service setup
- Merchants also considering Square Online, Payroll, Loyalty or Marketing
Limits to test
Square’s software fee is not the complete cost: processing, hardware and optional services are separate. The free plan is not equivalent to Plus. Complex allocation, very large catalogs, multiple legal entities, international operations or a non-Square processor may require another architecture. Review Square Retail POS and Square POS pricing.
3. Lightspeed Retail: best for inventory-intensive retail
Lightspeed is aimed at specialty retailers that need more than a basic tablet register: purchasing, vendor management, multi-location inventory, reporting, mobile scanning, connected hardware and ecommerce are core parts of its retail proposition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhere it fits
- Large catalogs, variants, purchase orders and frequent receiving
- Retailers transferring stock among locations
- Businesses needing deeper retail controls than entry-level systems provide
Cost and trade-offs
Lightspeed’s public pricing and payment terms can change by market and sales channel, so obtain a current quote covering locations, registers, payments, ecommerce, support and implementation. It can cost more than a starter POS, but the comparison should include the value of purchasing controls, inventory accuracy and multi-location workflows. See Lightspeed Retail pricing.
Best and poor fit
It is a poor fit for a very small merchant seeking a free plan, a mostly self-service rollout or only simple inventory. Confirm which features are native, paid add-ons or partner integrations.
4. Clover Retail: best hardware and payments ecosystem
Clover offers countertop and mobile hardware plus an app marketplace. It can suit merchants buying through a bank, merchant-services provider or authorized reseller, especially when payment hardware and in-store workflow matter as much as software.
The commercial warning
Clover is not one uniform offer. Its retail page displays hardware bundles and software configurations, but processing rates, contracts, cancellation terms, support and equipment ownership can differ by acquiring bank or reseller. Obtain the complete written agreement rather than relying on a device price or headline monthly fee. Start with Clover retail pricing and Clover retail POS.

5. NCR Voyix: best for enterprise unified commerce
NCR Voyix targets large, high-volume and multinational retailers. Its Voyix Commerce Platform covers enterprise POS and connected capabilities such as inventory, purchasing, loyalty, analytics, integrations and personalization. Read the company’s unified-commerce announcement and commerce platform overview.
Where it fits
Use it when centralized governance, complex loyalty, store-scale workflows, multiple countries or substantial integration requirements justify a formal program.
Why it is not a small-business alternative
NCR Voyix is quote-based and requires data migration, systems integration, training, rollout planning and change management. A one- or two-store retailer without those resources should not treat it as a larger version of Square.

Commercial reality
Modules, deployment, integrations, users, locations and professional services determine the proposal. Oracle’s product pages establish the enterprise positioning, but they do not create a comparable small-business price. See Oracle Retail Xstore and Oracle Retail.

NewStore takes a cloud-native, mobile-first approach to store operations. Its strengths include mobile POS, clienteling, assisted selling and endless aisle experiences for fashion, luxury, apparel and specialty brands expanding from digital into physical retail.

Evaluate the operating details, not just the demo
Inventory and fulfillment
Test variants, bundles, serial numbers, lot or expiration tracking, reservations, purchase orders, receiving discrepancies, cycle counts, transfers, valuation, preorders and backorders. Ask how quickly each channel updates, what safety-stock rules exist and what happens when two channels sell the final unit.
Orders, returns and promotions
Demonstrate an online order returned in a store, a store purchase returned by mail, a split shipment, partial cancellation, partial refund, exchange at another location and a gift return without a receipt. Then test buy-one-get-one, member pricing, exclusions, stacking, local overrides and returns after a promotion.
Customer identity and loyalty
Check duplicate-profile handling, email and phone matching, consent, loyalty and gift-card balances, household or business accounts, privacy controls and data export. Recording transactions is not the same as maintaining a unified customer view.

Offline operation
Ask which tenders continue during an outage, whether inventory and customer data are delayed, how duplicate transactions are prevented, whether offline mode requires setup and how queued transactions reconcile when the connection returns. “Cloud-based” does not automatically mean fully usable offline.
Hardware and integrations
Compare iPad, Android, Windows or proprietary terminals; handheld checkout; tap-to-pay; scanners; printers; cash drawers; customer displays; self-checkout; RFID and warehouse workflows. List every accounting, ERP, shipping, returns, loyalty, workforce, marketplace and CRM connection, including API limits, webhooks and app fees.
Calculate total cost of ownership
Use this model rather than comparing subscription headlines:
Total cost of ownership = software subscriptions + payment processing + hardware + ecommerce subscription + add-ons and apps + integrations + implementation + data migration + training + support + contract or cancellation costs.

Model at least three scenarios: a one-location store with $25,000 in monthly card-present sales; a two- to five-location retailer with $100,000 in combined monthly online and store sales; and a multi-country enterprise with complex ERP and loyalty integrations. Label every calculation as an illustration. Processing economics vary with card mix, average ticket, keyed and card-not-present volume, negotiated rates, refunds, chargebacks and country.
Payment questions
- Can you use another processor?
- What are the contract length and early-termination terms?
- Who owns the hardware?
- How are refunds, chargebacks and deposits handled?
- What are card-present, card-not-present and offline limits?
- Which countries and payment methods are supported?
Questions to ask in a vendor demonstration
- Can an online order be returned in any store?
- How quickly does inventory synchronize, and is it instant, queued or batched?
- What continues working during an internet or payment outage?
- Can we keep our current processor?
- What exactly is included in the quoted price?
- Are gift cards and loyalty balances shared across channels?
- Can we export products, customers, orders and financial data?
- Which APIs, webhooks and rate limits are included?
- How are partial refunds, split orders and substitutions handled?
- Who owns implementation, migration, training and post-launch support?
- What are the contract, renewal and cancellation terms?
- Can you demonstrate our most complex promotion and fulfillment flow using our data?
Bottom line: choose the operating model first
Choose Shopify when ecommerce is central, Square when simplicity and entry cost dominate, Lightspeed when inventory complexity dominates, Clover when hardware and payment-provider relationships dominate, NCR Voyix or Oracle for enterprise retail operations, and NewStore for mobile-first, digitally native store experiences. The right platform is the one that connects the channels you actually operate without creating avoidable reconciliation, migration or implementation work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these seven POS systems ranked from best to worst?
No. They represent different retail operating models, from self-service small-business systems to enterprise suites, so a universal ranking would be misleading.
Is an ecommerce integration enough to call a POS omnichannel?
No. Verify shared inventory, customer records, orders, returns, promotions and fulfillment, plus the synchronization method and offline behavior.
Which platform has the lowest price?
Square lists a free plan for one location, but processing, hardware and add-ons still cost money. Shopify also has a low published starting plan, while POS Pro is additional. Compare complete ownership costs rather than software fees alone.
