99math raised $2.1 million in 2022 to turn math practice into a multiplayer game

99math’s July 2022 $2.1 million raise backed a social, game-based approach to math fluency. Here is what the product does, how it planned to monetize, and what its traction claims really show.

Estonian edtech startup 99math announced a $2.1 million funding round on July 1, 2022. Play Ventures led the round, with Flyer One Ventures and Change Ventures participating. The company said it would use the money to expand in the United States and other markets, improve its classroom game, add social and game features, and build home practice. This is a historical funding announcement—not a new 2026 raise.

99math’s proposition was straightforward: make repetitive math-fluency practice feel like a short, social game. Teachers could launch a session quickly, students joined with a code, and the platform recorded performance. The investment case depended on turning teacher adoption into household subscriptions while making practice more engaging.

What the $2.1 million round covered

GamesBeat reported the round on July 1, 2022, describing 99math as a Tallinn, Estonia-based company that was approximately three years old at the time. Play Ventures led the investment; Flyer One Ventures and Change Ventures also participated. A separate funding report lists the same investors and planned expansion. The Estonian Venture Capital Association also lists the round.

Available databases label the financing “Series Unknown,” so it should not be called a Series A. Wellfound’s funding listing does not establish a formal series classification.

Those were announced intentions, not an audited breakdown of how every dollar was spent. The reporting does not establish a valuation, revenue figure, profitability, or later funding rounds.

What 99math does

99math is a game-based math-fluency platform rather than a complete mathematics curriculum. Its current support description includes live multiplayer games, individual assignments, home practice, teacher reporting, and rewards. The company describes the product here.

The 2022 classroom flow was designed for roughly grades 2 through 8; current support material describes the product as intended for grades 1 through 8. A teacher chooses a skill, starts a session, and shares a game code. Students answer problems simultaneously, while the teacher receives results and progress information. GamesBeat reported that setup could take less than a minute. That timing is a company/product claim, not an independent usability test.

Why investors saw a large opportunity

99math’s pitch combined classroom software, consumer subscriptions, and game design. An investor comment cited about 40 million students learning math in the United States and roughly 1 billion worldwide; those are investor/company market estimates, not independently validated market-size figures. The funding report contains that estimate.

Play Ventures’ participation mattered strategically. It is a gaming-focused investor, and 99math positioned math practice around short rounds, social play, rewards, and competition rather than solely around worksheet-style exercises. The thesis was that students who disengage from repetitive practice might do more of it when the experience feels social and game-like.

That is an engagement hypothesis, not proof of higher achievement. The available funding coverage does not provide an independent controlled study showing improved test scores, conceptual understanding, or long-term retention.

How 99math intended to make money

In 2022, 99math said teachers and schools could use the core product for free while the company monetized parents through subscriptions. That arrangement lowers the initial adoption barrier: a teacher can introduce the product without a school purchase, and families can decide whether to pay for additional home practice.

Current materials show a broader structure:

Offering Customer What the available source says
Free classroom access Teachers and students Core classroom use is available through the public product; exact current free-tier limits should be checked before adoption.
Math Pass Families and students A paid home-practice subscription with extended practice time, avatar customization, and additional in-game rewards. See the Math Pass description.
Premium Teachers, schools, and districts Quote-based licensing; the reviewed support page does not publish a standard price. See the upgrade information.

The model has a built-in tension: teachers and schools distribute the product, but parents may be the paying customers. Adoption can spread quickly through classrooms, yet conversion and retention depend on whether families see enough value beyond the free school experience.

Traction in 2022 versus current company claims

At the time of the raise, 99math reported approximately 1 million children using the platform and more than 600 million math problems solved—about 3 million per day by the company’s calculation. These figures were company-reported, not independently audited.

Current company-controlled pages report larger but inconsistent numbers. The support page says more than 80,000 teachers use 99math. The current product description makes that claim. The company’s AI marketing page says 3.8 million students, 150 million games, and 80,000 active teachers. Those figures appear on the AI site. Its LinkedIn page says nearly 4 million students play monthly, more than 80,000 teachers use the product, and students solve more than 500 million problems monthly. LinkedIn contains that wording.

Different dates, definitions, or product surfaces may explain the discrepancies. They should not be combined into one definitive growth rate without clarification from 99math.

Where the product can help—and where it can fail

Potential advantages for teachers

  • Fast setup for a short practice block.
  • Immediate whole-class participation through live multiplayer play.
  • Useful repetition for arithmetic fluency and retrieval.
  • Teacher-facing results that can flag students needing support.
  • Browser-based joining was described in older company material, reducing the need for a dedicated app. See the company’s U.S. launch explanation.

Important trade-offs

  • Speed-based rounds can reward quick recall more than careful reasoning.
  • Leaderboards may motivate some students while embarrassing or discouraging others.
  • Devices, connectivity, language support, and accessibility accommodations can affect participation.
  • Teachers must check that the available skill matches local standards and the lesson objective.
  • A game should supplement explicit instruction, discussion, worked examples, and non-timed practice.

Questions for schools and districts

  • What does Premium add beyond the free version, and is licensing priced per student, teacher, school, or district?
  • Are rostering, identity-provider integrations, report exports, and accessibility features sufficient for your environment?
  • Can competitive elements be reduced or replaced with private, mastery-oriented practice?
  • How are student names, performance records, and account data handled under your privacy and procurement rules?
  • Does the content map clearly to your standards and existing curriculum?

How 99math compares with common alternatives

Product Primary difference Potential fit
Kahoot! Broad, cross-subject live quizzes and classroom response. Teachers wanting a general-purpose quiz system rather than dedicated math-fluency practice.
Blooket Question sets wrapped in varied competitive game modes. Classrooms prioritizing game variety and already having suitable questions.
Quizizz Live and asynchronous quizzes across subjects. Homework and formative assessment workflows.
Prodigy Math Narrative, role-playing-game approach to math practice. Families seeking a longer-form adventure world instead of short synchronous rounds.
IXL Broad standards-oriented practice and analytics. Schools prioritizing individual skill coverage and structured reporting over social competition.

Current prices for these alternatives are not established here and should be checked directly before purchase.

What the funding story does—and does not—prove

The $2.1 million round demonstrates investor confidence in a model combining teacher distribution, family subscriptions, and game mechanics. It does not prove that 99math raises test scores, replaces a curriculum, or converts every classroom user into a paying household.

For a teacher or parent, the practical question is narrower: does short, social practice help this learner build the targeted fluency without creating counterproductive pressure? For a school buyer, the additional questions are privacy, accessibility, standards alignment, reporting, support, and the cost and limits of Premium.

The Bottom Line

99math’s distinctive proposition is quick, multiplayer math-fluency practice distributed through classrooms and potentially monetized through families. The 2022 funding round financed expansion of that engagement strategy; it was not evidence that game mechanics alone deliver conceptual learning or higher test scores. Treat 99math as a supplemental practice tool, and verify current pricing, integrations, privacy terms, and metric definitions before committing school or household money.
