On November 19, 2013, Russian internet company Mail.Ru Group launched My.com, a Mountain View-based subsidiary aimed at U.S. users. Its first offerings were a mobile email app, a messaging app and a portfolio of games—not a literal invasion, and not a bid to transplant Russia’s Mail.Ru portal wholesale. The real story was an ambitious attempt to turn domestic internet success into an international mobile business.
What Mail.Ru launched in the United States
My.com presented three products under a fresh international brand: myMail, myChat and myGames. Mail.Ru was the parent company; My.com was its U.S.-focused subsidiary and consumer-facing initiative. The company chose Mountain View, California, for its base and described the United States as a particularly competitive market. The launch announcement and contemporary reporting frame the move as commercial expansion through mobile apps.
The provocative “invade America” wording was a metaphor for entering a market dominated by established U.S. and global services. It was not a political or military operation. The company’s bet was that a mobile-first brand could be more approachable to Americans than a Russian-language portal name they might not recognize.
Why a Russian internet giant wanted to expand
Mail.Ru was more than an email provider. In 2013, it had interests in email, search, news and portal services, social networking, messaging, online games and advertising. Contemporary coverage described it as a leading Russian-speaking internet company and reported more than 100 million monthly users across the Russian-speaking world. That was a period-specific estimate of the parent company’s broader audience, not a count of My.com customers or U.S. users.

International growth offered a way to extend the reach of a company whose strongest positions were concentrated in Russian-speaking markets. Smartphones and app stores also gave a company a route into foreign markets without first recreating a full web portal. Mail.Ru chief executive Dmitry Grishin described the United States as the most competitive market and an important test of whether the company could compete globally, according to VentureBeat’s launch coverage.
A separate brand also had practical value: U.S. users did not need to know or trust Mail.Ru before trying an app. Games gave the company a more portable product category than a Russia-specific news or portal service, and Mail.Ru already had games with users beyond Russia. The strategy combined those advantages with a difficult task: persuading people to add unfamiliar communication apps to phones already full of established services.

What the three My.com products did
myMail: one app for existing email accounts
myMail was a mobile email client, not a new email network. It was designed to manage multiple accounts, including Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook.com and AOL, in one app. The launch materials highlighted push notifications, customization, traffic compression and an interface designed for phones. Its pitch was convenience and control over alerts rather than a replacement for users’ existing email providers. Mail.Ru’s announcement describes the product as it was introduced.
myChat: text, voice and video
myChat offered text and media messaging, group chats, voice calls and video calls. Launch coverage also described connections with contacts and Facebook accounts. That feature set put it in direct competition with services such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Skype and Apple’s iMessage. The challenge was not simply to offer messaging features; it was to persuade users’ friends and family to use the same service.

myGames: free-to-play titles
myGames grouped mobile games, including Jungle Heat, Poker Arena and Lucky Fields. The games could earn revenue in their own right and serve as a route for introducing players to the company’s other apps. Jungle Heat was the strongest early international example cited in launch coverage: Mail.Ru and contemporary reports described millions of downloads and substantial revenue from outside Russia. Those were company-reported or contemporary figures, not a measure of U.S.-only adoption. A March 2014 company announcement later outlined plans to expand the games division.
“Communitainment”: the ecosystem idea behind the apps
Mail.Ru called its combination of communication and entertainment “communitainment.” The logic was that games could attract people, messaging could keep them engaged with friends and fellow players, and the apps could promote one another. A connected portfolio might make the company less dependent on any single product.

That was a strategic pitch, not proof of a working flywheel. Cross-promotion only helps if people adopt more than one app, and a popular game does not automatically create demand for an email client or chat service. Each product still had to give users a reason to choose it over familiar alternatives.

- Entrenched services: Email users already had accounts with large, trusted providers, while messaging alternatives were already widely used.
- Network effects: A chat app becomes more useful when a person’s contacts are there. New services must overcome the reluctance to switch or maintain yet another social network.
- Brand and acquisition costs: My.com began without broad U.S. name recognition and had to win attention in a crowded app market.
- Uneven portability: A game can find players across borders more readily than a communication service can build a connected community. Game downloads do not demonstrate loyalty to an email or chat product.
- Privacy and trust: Contemporary coverage noted that My.com’s global headquarters were in the Netherlands and raised the possibility that the location might appeal to people concerned about NSA surveillance. That was a possible marketing angle, not evidence that Dutch headquarters or servers made the service private, secure or immune from government access.
VentureBeat’s assessment at launch was skeptical: the apps appeared usable, but their features did not look revolutionary enough on their own to break through in the United States. A polished interface could improve an app experience; it could not by itself solve the problems of differentiation, trust and network effects.

What the early numbers do—and do not—show
At launch, Interfax reported that My.com had more than 50,000 preregistrations. That is a prelaunch interest figure, not a count of active users. Mail.Ru’s broader audience of more than 100 million monthly users referred to Russian-speaking markets, not My.com’s U.S. reach. Likewise, Jungle Heat’s reported millions of downloads and revenue outside Russia indicate international games activity, but do not isolate American users or demonstrate adoption of myMail and myChat. Interfax’s November 20, 2013 report covered the preregistrations and launch.
These measures answer different questions: preregistrations indicate initial interest; downloads indicate installations; monthly users indicate recurring use; revenue indicates monetization. None of the cited launch-era figures establishes that My.com became a major U.S. consumer platform.
What happened to the international push
The clearest continuation in the available corporate history is in games. Mail.Ru expanded its international games business under My.com, and the effort later became associated with the MY.GAMES brand. VK’s corporate history of MY.GAMES traces that later development. The broader corporate lineage is now presented under VK; VK’s company history places Mail.ru services within that wider ecosystem.
The documented arc does not establish U.S. user totals for myMail or myChat, whether myChat built meaningful network effects, whether the Mountain View office remains active, or whether the consumer-app initiative was profitable. The launch and the later games expansion are documented; a comparable long-term U.S. success for the communication apps is not established by those sources.

What the headline really captures
Mail.Ru’s 2013 move was a commercial attempt by a powerful Russian internet company to compete internationally through mobile apps. Its most portable bet was games; email and messaging faced entrenched competitors and the harder task of building user habits and networks. The “invasion” was a vivid way to describe a global ambition, not evidence that the company conquered the American market.
