The customer is Mitsubishi Motors. A March 21, 2025 report said the Japanese automaker had agreed to have Foxconn build electric vehicles in Taiwan, initially for intended export to Australia and New Zealand. The reported arrangement could give Foxconn a valuable reference customer, but its model, production schedule, volume and commercial terms have not been disclosed publicly.
What the reported Mitsubishi deal does—and does not—establish
According to Transport Topics’ March 21, 2025 report, Mitsubishi Motors was Foxconn’s first major customer for outsourced EV manufacturing. Foxconn, the familiar name for Hon Hai Precision Industry, would build the vehicles in Taiwan. Australia and New Zealand were reported as the initial intended export markets.
The report described an agreement or arrangement, not a fully disclosed production contract with public commercial terms. Mitsubishi Motors’ spokesperson reportedly said the company was open to collaboration; Foxconn representatives declined to comment at the time. That distinction matters: the report is evidence of a significant customer relationship, not proof that vehicles entered production or that a scaled business is already operating.
| Reported | Not publicly established in the cited report |
|---|---|
| Mitsubishi Motors as customer; Taiwan as the production location; Australia and New Zealand as intended initial destinations. | Vehicle model, plant or production line, start date, annual volume, contract duration, price, investment, or contract value. |
| An outsourced EV-manufacturing relationship. | Whether Foxconn would handle complete vehicle assembly or a narrower scope; whether the vehicle would use a Foxtron platform, Mitsubishi engineering, or a combination; and how design, software, warranty and recall responsibilities would be divided. |
Those open points are not minor details. They determine whether this is a small production program, a repeatable manufacturing business, or something between the two.

Why Mitsubishi Motors matters to Foxconn
Foxconn built its reputation making complex electronics at scale for other companies. Its automotive ambition is to apply some of that industrial expertise to vehicles without relying solely on selling cars under a Foxconn consumer brand. Contract design and manufacturing—often abbreviated CDMS—can encompass engineering, component sourcing, software and electronics integration, and assembly, depending on the specific customer program.
An established automaker can offer a stronger commercial reference than a startup with an uncertain path to production. A Mitsubishi Motors program, if it proceeds at meaningful scale, could help Foxconn show other automakers that it can meet automotive quality, safety, regulatory and delivery requirements. It could also create recurring manufacturing work and diversify revenue beyond consumer electronics.

But a customer win is not the same as proof of a profitable auto business. Vehicle programs take years to develop and validate, involve substantial warranty and recall exposure, and can be difficult to make economical at low volumes. Automakers may keep design and purchasing control, have excess factory capacity, or bring production in-house. Tariffs and local-content rules can also weaken the economics of exporting vehicles assembled in another market. Foxconn’s SEC-filed discussion of outsourced vehicle manufacturing risks describes these kinds of commercial uncertainties.
Foxconn is an industrial partner, not simply a new car brand
Several entities and initiatives sit behind the strategy. Foxconn is the operating name commonly used for Hon Hai Technology Group; Foxtron Vehicle Technologies is a vehicle-focused joint venture with Taiwan’s Yulon. Foxtron’s business spans vehicle platforms and models, supply-chain and manufacturing management, and both business-to-business and consumer-facing activity, according to Foxconn’s Taiwan EV materials.

Foxconn also promotes the MIH open EV platform and ecosystem, and works on vehicle electronics, software-defined vehicle systems, smart-cockpit technology and batteries. Separately, its 50/50 SiliconAuto venture with Stellantis is intended to design and sell automotive semiconductors, with activity beginning in 2026, according to Foxconn’s announcement. Component and semiconductor projects broaden the automotive strategy, but they are not the same as manufacturing a complete Mitsubishi Motors vehicle.
The Ohio experience is a caution, not a verdict on the whole strategy
Foxconn’s earlier U.S. push centered on the former General Motors plant in Lordstown, Ohio. Foxconn and Lordstown Motors announced an agreement in principle in 2021 that contemplated Foxconn acquiring the facility and manufacturing Lordstown’s Endurance pickup. The companies later announced a plant transaction and joint venture; their announcements are available from Foxconn and Lordstown Motors.

The hoped-for customer pipeline did not become a durable base of production programs. Lordstown failed, and proposed work involving other startups did not provide a lasting anchor; the Ohio facility was later sold. Reporting on the sale and the end of a planned Monarch tractor program describes the broader shortfall in TechCrunch’s account.
The lesson is not that every Foxconn automotive effort has failed. It is that factory capacity alone cannot make a vehicle program viable: the customer must have the financing, product demand and ability to reach production. An established automaker such as Mitsubishi Motors may be a more credible partner than a cash-strapped startup, but Foxconn still has to demonstrate execution and economics.

Which Mitsubishi? Three separate relationships
“Mitsubishi” can refer to different companies, and their announcements should not be combined into one deal:
- Mitsubishi Motors: The Japanese automaker identified in the March 2025 report about Foxconn manufacturing EVs in Taiwan.
- Mitsubishi Fuso: A separate planned collaboration announced in January 2026 around a zero-emission bus OEM structure. Foxconn said the company was expected to be established in the second half of 2026; that plan should not be treated as evidence of completion. See Foxconn’s announcement.
- Mitsubishi Electric: A separate automotive-equipment memorandum with Hon Hai announced in April 2026, not the Mitsubishi Motors vehicle-manufacturing arrangement. See Mitsubishi Electric’s announcement.
Foxconn has also announced a strategic partnership with ElectroMobility Poland to develop an EV ecosystem in Europe. That and the other later relationships show that its automotive activity extends beyond one customer, but they do not supply undisclosed terms for the Mitsubishi Motors arrangement. Foxconn’s official EV announcements provide the company’s descriptions of those initiatives.
What would show that the arrangement is becoming a real production business?
For readers assessing whether the reported customer relationship has moved beyond an announcement, the most informative evidence would be concrete execution milestones:
- A definitive manufacturing agreement or direct confirmation by Mitsubishi Motors.
- A named vehicle, assigned plant and production start date.
- Tooling, pilot production and export homologation for the intended markets.
- Published production or delivery figures, followed by evidence of actual sales or registrations.
- Clarity on program duration, volume, capital spending, and allocation of quality, warranty and recall responsibilities.
- Additional automaker programs and disclosed automotive revenue or margins that indicate the work is repeatable and economically meaningful.
Until such details emerge, it is not possible to infer the program’s scale or contribution to Foxconn’s overall business. Its significance is best understood as a strategic customer signal—not evidence that Foxconn has already become a high-volume, profitable carmaker.
