Spotify did offer refunds for its discontinued Car Thing, but the reported deadline to contact the company was January 14, 2025. As of August 18, 2026, the available public information does not establish an open, blanket refund program. Owners who missed the deadline can ask Spotify Support whether an exception is possible, but should not count on receiving one.
Why Spotify Car Thing stopped working
Car Thing was a dashboard device for controlling Spotify from a phone. Spotify made it generally available in the United States on February 22, 2022, for $89.99. It required a Spotify Premium subscription, a smartphone, an internet connection through mobile data or Wi-Fi, and a connection to the car’s audio system. Spotify’s launch announcement described the U.S. release and requirements.
Spotify stopped producing Car Thing in July 2022, citing low demand and supply-chain issues. In May 2024, it announced that the devices would stop operating on December 9, 2024. Units were disabled on that date and displayed a shutdown message. TechCrunch reported on the shutdown announcement; its December report confirmed the devices had been disabled.
How the historical refund offer worked
In May 2024, reporting confirmed that Spotify had begun handling Car Thing refund requests through customer support. This was not described as an automatic refund or a self-service claim form: owners were directed to contact Spotify and provide proof of purchase. After the shutdown, a message on the device reportedly told owners to contact support about refund options by January 14, 2025. The reported cutoff has passed. Spotify’s general refund-policy page covers other Spotify purchases and does not establish a current Car Thing refund program. The U.S. support site remains the official place to ask about an individual case, but its availability does not mean a late Car Thing claim will be approved.
Who may have qualified—and what proof mattered
The clearest reported requirement was proof of purchase. The available public reporting does not provide a complete, lasting official eligibility table, so specific cases should be treated as uncertain rather than governed by assumed rules.

- Second-hand buyers: A resale receipt may not establish that the device came from an eligible original purchase. Reporting described marketplace purchases as problematic; a second-hand owner can still ask support, but should set modest expectations. Digital Music News reported on the purchase-channel issue.
- Gifted devices: The recipient may need the original purchaser’s order record or receipt.
- Discounted purchases: Do not assume a refund would equal the $89.99 general-release price. The relevant amount could depend on the actual eligible transaction.
- Owners outside the United States: The public retail launch and most refund reporting concerned U.S. purchases. The evidence does not establish a universal refund offer for devices bought elsewhere.
Spotify support handled requests individually, and owners reported different refund or credit outcomes. The available public reporting does not establish one payment method for every claimant or a guaranteed cash amount, account credit, or Premium compensation.
What to do if you missed the deadline
- Open Spotify’s official U.S. support channel directly and ask whether an exception process remains available for a disabled Car Thing.
- Provide the original order confirmation or invoice if you have it. A payment record or device serial information may help support investigate, but the reporting does not establish that every type of record was accepted as proof.
- Ask what refund method, if any, is available before accepting credit or another offer. Do not assume a specific amount or form of compensation.
- Keep the case number and copies of the support conversation and written response.
Because the reported request deadline was January 14, 2025, a late request is a request for possible discretion—not a guaranteed entitlement. Use Spotify’s official domain and do not share banking credentials in response to unsolicited messages.

Do owners have to return the device?
The shutdown guidance reported by TechCrunch told owners to factory-reset Car Thing and dispose of it according to local electronic-waste rules. The cited reporting on refunds focused on proof of purchase and does not establish a universal requirement to return the hardware. See the shutdown guidance and the report on the deactivation.
Can a disabled Car Thing still be used?
It no longer works as Spotify’s official player because Spotify shut down the service. Community projects may attempt to repurpose the hardware, but they are unofficial and can involve firmware changes, unsupported software, security risks, or compatibility problems. They are not a dependable substitute for the discontinued service. If you still have the device, follow the reset and electronic-waste guidance rather than buying or selling it on the assumption that Spotify functionality remains.

What the Car Thing lawsuit does—and does not—mean
A proposed class-action complaint filed in May 2024 alleged that disabling purchased Car Thing units harmed consumers. Those are allegations in a lawsuit, not a court finding of liability, and the filing did not itself create an automatic refund entitlement. The filed complaint is the source for the allegations.
A separate Spotify USA matter that resulted in an arbitration order in April 2026 does not establish a Car Thing refund program. The docket result concerns that separate case; it should not be treated as a Car Thing settlement or payout.

Is a used Car Thing worth buying?
No, not if you expect it to work as Spotify’s official in-car player. The service has been disabled, and the historical refund window is over. A phone using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in a compatible vehicle, or a compatible aftermarket receiver for a car without modern infotainment, is a more practical direction. Check compatibility with your phone and vehicle before buying hardware; a Spotify Premium subscription alone does not restore Car Thing.
