Perplexity announced Comet Plus on August 25, 2025 as a standalone $5-per-month subscription for selected premium content from participating publishers and journalists. It is a content plan connected to Perplexity’s Comet browser, not a fee to use the browser itself. Perplexity also announced that Pro and Max subscribers would receive Comet Plus automatically. As of August 16, 2026, the announcement and partner disclosures do not conclusively establish the current checkout price, complete catalog, geographic rollout, or access limits.
What Comet Plus is—and is not
Comet is Perplexity’s browser and AI assistant. Comet Plus is the separate paid content layer intended to help users discover and access premium journalism while sharing subscription revenue with participating publishers.
That distinction matters financially: paying for Comet Plus was announced as a way to buy participating publishers’ content access, not as a requirement to download or use Comet. Browser availability and premium-content eligibility are separate questions.
Price, eligibility and the limits of the announcement
| Question | What was announced or documented |
|---|---|
| Standalone price | $5 per month, announced by Perplexity on August 25, 2025. See Perplexity’s announcement. |
| Pro and Max | Perplexity said Pro and Max subscribers would receive Comet Plus automatically, with no separate Comet Plus charge described in the announcement. |
| Annual plan, trial and taxes | Not stated in the inspected announcement. |
| Current August 2026 checkout price | Not conclusively established by the available sources; check the live Perplexity site before subscribing. |
| Cancellation, refunds and family plans | Not stated in the inspected material. |
“Included” should be read as a benefit attached to an active Pro or Max membership unless Perplexity’s current terms say otherwise. The current Max documentation describes advanced Comet-related capabilities but does not, by itself, prove the present billing treatment for Comet Plus: Perplexity Max help page.

What subscribers may actually receive
The verified description is access to premium content from participating publishers and journalists. The clearest partner example is Condé Nast, whose announcement described select paywalled articles across its U.S. titles, with participating journalism informing AI answers: Condé Nast’s announcement.
That wording does not promise unlimited access to every article, every title, or a publisher’s complete archive. It also does not establish whether a particular story appears as a full article, excerpt, or AI-generated answer; whether access works on publisher websites as well as in Comet; or whether saving, sharing and offline reading are supported.

Why Perplexity launched it
Perplexity presents Comet Plus as both a convenience product and a publisher-funding model: users get AI-assisted discovery of trusted reporting, while publishers receive subscription revenue rather than relying only on referral clicks.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Axios reported that Perplexity planned to allocate 80% of Comet Plus subscription revenue to participating publishers and established an initial $42.5 million compensation pool for early partners. Those are reported plans, not independently audited payouts or a guarantee that a publisher receives a fixed amount per reader or article: Axios.
Direct partnerships may address some concerns about AI systems using publisher work, but they do not settle broader questions about licensing, copyright, attribution, privacy or how an AI answer represents the original reporting.

Is it an Apple News+ replacement?
Comet Plus is better understood as a potential AI-oriented alternative to a news bundle than as a confirmed replacement for Apple News+. TechCrunch described it as an AI-enhanced alternative, while noting the distinction between Comet access, Comet Plus and Perplexity’s paid tiers: TechCrunch.
| Factor | Comet Plus | Apple News+ | Individual publisher plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main experience | Perplexity’s AI search and Comet browser | Apple’s reading ecosystem | One publisher’s site, apps and subscriber benefits |
| Access depth | Selected access is the strongest confirmed description | Depends on each participating title and Apple’s terms | Usually the deepest access to that publisher’s work |
| Catalog certainty | Partner list and limits require current checking | Established bundle, but title availability varies | Clear for the subscribed publication |
| AI discovery | Core differentiator | Not the defining feature | Usually secondary to direct reading |
| Best financial use | Low-cost supplement if your publications participate | Bundle for readers already in Apple’s ecosystem | Best for loyal readers needing a full archive |
A $5 announced price is attractive only if the included publications are ones you actually read. A smaller catalog or selective article access can make the apparent saving less meaningful than the headline suggests.

Who should consider the subscription?
Potentially good value
- Comet users who regularly read participating publications.
- Readers who want AI-assisted discovery alongside direct access to selected premium stories.
- Pro or Max customers who already receive the feature and want to use its publisher catalog.
- People who prefer one discovery interface instead of several separate subscriptions.
Likely poor value
- Anyone seeking unlimited access to one newspaper or magazine’s archive.
- Readers whose preferred publication is not in the active catalog.
- People who do not use Perplexity or Comet.
- Users who already subscribe directly to the relevant publishers and gain little additional access.
- Readers unwilling to rely on AI summaries or concerned about how stories are surfaced.
What remains uncertain before you subscribe
- Open the current Perplexity signup or plans page and confirm the displayed price, taxes and billing interval.
- Find the live partner list and check the exact titles you read.
- Confirm whether “access” means a full article, selected articles, excerpts or AI-informed answers.
- Check country, platform and account eligibility, especially if you are outside the United States.
- Review cancellation, refund and renewal terms before entering payment details.
Do not assume that an existing newspaper subscription transfers into Comet Plus, that a participating publisher’s entire catalog is unlocked, or that an AI answer is equivalent to permission to read the underlying article.
Bottom line for your budget
Comet Plus is a low-cost, AI-mediated premium-content bundle announced at $5 per month—not a paid version of the Comet browser. Its value depends less on the nominal price than on three practical facts: whether your preferred publishers participate, how much of their work is accessible, and whether you already pay for Perplexity Pro, Max or direct publisher subscriptions. Treat the $5 figure as the announced price from August 25, 2025 and verify the live offer and catalog before committing.
