Grammarly announced in early February 2024 that it would eliminate about 230 jobs worldwide as part of a restructuring focused on an “AI-enabled workplace.” The company described the move as a strategic redesign—not a response to financial distress—and said it remained profitable and financially strong. Those financial claims came from Grammarly; as a private company, it does not publish the kind of regular financial disclosures that would let outsiders independently verify them.
What Grammarly announced
Grammarly told employees in early February 2024 that it planned to eliminate approximately 230 jobs globally. TechCrunch reported the announcement on February 9. The company framed the cuts as a business restructuring, and CEO Rahul Roy-Chowdhury’s employee memo said the changes would affect most functions and geographies. That does not establish that every team lost staff or that cuts were distributed evenly.
Grammarly did not announce an official percentage of its workforce being cut. The memo said the company had grown from about 200 to 1,000 employees over the preceding five years, but that rounded historical figure is not necessarily its headcount immediately before the layoffs. Dividing 230 by 1,000 would therefore not produce a reliable official layoff percentage. TechCrunch’s February 2024 report includes the memo’s details.
Why Grammarly said it made the cuts
Grammarly’s stated aim was to refocus on the “AI-enabled workplace.” In its restructuring announcement, the company described a need to change its mix of skills, redesign how teams were organized, improve the quality and speed of collaboration, and invest more deeply in AI technology. These are the company’s stated strategic reasons, not independently established explanations for why particular roles were eliminated.

That distinction matters when assessing the role of generative AI. Grammarly’s announcement pointed to AI as a strategic destination and a reason to build different capabilities; the available public accounts do not show that AI directly automated the work of the 230 people affected. Nor did the company identify ChatGPT or another individual competitor as the cause.

| Location or scope | Reported impact | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Worldwide | About 230 jobs | The approximate company-wide total reported in February 2024. |
| San Francisco | 82 workers | The San Francisco Chronicle reported this figure from employment-filing details; the separations were scheduled for April 8, 2024. |
| Ukraine | 37 workers | The San Francisco Chronicle reported this figure; it is not a company-confirmed full geographic breakdown. |
The San Francisco filing reportedly named the head of brand design, the head of human insights, and 17 software engineers among affected workers. Those examples should not be read as a complete list of roles or a map of cuts across the company. The San Francisco Chronicle report also said Grammarly planned to maintain offices in San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Berlin, Kyiv, Vancouver, and Kraków. The reported location figures cannot be added or subtracted to reconstruct a definitive global breakdown.
What affected employees were reportedly offered
TechCrunch reported that impacted employees would receive at least three months of base pay, along with health-insurance benefits where applicable to their location. The qualification matters: benefits and employment arrangements vary by country, so this should not be treated as one identical package available to every affected employee worldwide.

Did the layoffs signal financial trouble?
Grammarly characterized the restructuring as strategic rather than cost-cutting. Roy-Chowdhury’s memo said the company was financially strong, growing, and profitable, and that it continued hiring in some areas. These were company statements, not audited public-company results. Because Grammarly was privately held, outsiders could not use a regular public earnings report to independently establish its financial condition at the time.
The cuts would reduce payroll, whatever the stated purpose, but that fact alone does not show that Grammarly was facing a financial emergency. Likewise, the company’s assertions of strength do not amount to independently verified financial disclosure. The most defensible conclusion is narrower: Grammarly presented the job reductions as an organizational and strategic decision, not as a response to reported losses or an immediate crisis.

How its earlier funding fits the story
In November 2021, Grammarly raised $200 million at a reported $13 billion valuation, according to TechCrunch. That was a private funding-round valuation, not a public market capitalization, and it does not establish what the company was worth in 2024 or is worth now. It is historical context for the scale of the business, not proof either of financial security at the time of the layoffs or of subsequent decline.

That later expansion toward a broader AI productivity platform is consistent with the AI direction Grammarly described in 2024. It is retrospective context, not evidence that the layoffs caused the rebrand or that the restructuring achieved a particular result. For customers, the corporate name change did not mean Grammarly itself disappeared.
