Yes—on a Windows PC, you can generally install and run two different years of QuickBooks Desktop. Install each product in its own folder with Custom and Network Options, not Express installation. The important limitation is the company file: opening an older file in a newer year or higher edition can convert it, and the converted file usually cannot be reopened in the older software.
This guidance applies primarily to U.S. Windows editions of QuickBooks Desktop. Product year, edition, release, and country version all affect compatibility.
When two QuickBooks installations can coexist
Intuit generally permits multiple QuickBooks Desktop years on one computer. For example, Pro 2023 and Pro 2025, Premier 2022 and Premier 2025, or Pro 2023 and Enterprise 2024 can usually be installed side by side. Each installation must have its own program directory. Understand the terms before installing
- Product: Pro, Premier, Accountant, or Enterprise.
- Year/version: 2023, 2024, 2025, and so on.
- Edition: such as Premier Contractor, Retail, or Manufacturing & Wholesale.
- Release/update: a maintenance update within a year, not a separate product year.
- Company file: normally a
.QBWfile. - Backup: normally a
.QBBfile. - Region: U.S., Canada, U.K., and other localized products are separate ecosystems.
How to install two Desktop years safely
- Identify the exact product, year, edition, and country version you need.
- Back up every company file before changing installations.
- Download the correct installers through Intuit’s Downloads & Updates process.
- Run the installer for the additional year.
- Choose Custom and Network Options, not Express.
- Select I’ll be using QuickBooks Desktop on this computer for a local installation, or the appropriate server/hosting choice for a network computer.
- When prompted about replacing an existing installation, choose the option that keeps it.
- Select Change the install location and create a new folder, for example
C:Program FilesIntuitQuickBooksPro2023orC:Program FilesIntuitQuickBooksPremier2024. - Do not choose an existing QuickBooks program folder or a folder containing company data.
- Complete the installation, then repeat for any other year.
- Open each year separately and use Help → Update QuickBooks. Updating one installation does not prove that every other year or edition is current.
Intuit’s installation instructions are at Install QuickBooks Desktop. Express installation can replace the existing program, which is why it is unsuitable when preserving an older year is the goal.
The company-file warning that matters most
Programs can coexist even when their files cannot. When a newer year or higher edition opens an older company file, QuickBooks may upgrade the file automatically or ask you to update it. That conversion is generally one way: the converted file normally will not open in the original older year. Enterprise files also cannot be opened in Pro or Premier.
Before converting, preserve both the original .QBW and a clearly named backup such as Company_PreUpgrade_2023.QBB. Never test a new year against the only working copy.
Safe conversion procedure
- Open the company in its original year, press F2, and record its location.
- Create a separate backup and retain the original file.
- If the file is on a server, copy it temporarily to a local drive.
- Ensure every other user is signed out.
- Open the newer QuickBooks year and choose File → Open or Restore Company → Open a company file → Next.
- Select the copy, sign in as the administrator, and allow QuickBooks to create or specify a backup.
- Select Update Now and test the converted copy before replacing anything.
- If the conversion fails, restore the backup and retry. Returning to the old year generally requires restoring the pre-conversion file; transactions entered afterward may need to be recreated.

Pro, Premier, Accountant, and Enterprise file relationships
- Pro and Premier files can generally be opened in either product without changing data when the relevant compatibility rules are met.
- Pro or Premier files can be upgraded to Enterprise.
- Enterprise files cannot be opened in Pro or Premier.
- Different years should not be treated as interchangeable file readers. Keep each company’s live file assigned to one supported year.
Do not let two years edit the same live .QBW file. Use a controlled copy for testing or migration.
Can both versions run at the same time?
Supported circumstances allow multiple Desktop applications to run simultaneously. However, simultaneous use consumes more memory and can expose conflicts involving printers, email settings, add-ins, licensing, or database services. Launch the intended year from a shortcut labeled with its product and year, and verify the title bar or Product Information screen before opening a live file.
Opening two company files at once is a separate feature. QuickBooks Accountant and Enterprise document a Primary/Secondary company-file workflow at Open and use a secondary company file. That feature does not make one company file safe to edit in two years.
Network and multi-user considerations
For QuickBooks Desktop 2018 and later, hosting settings are independent for each installed year. Database services are also year-specific; Intuit lists examples such as QuickBooksDB32 for 2022, QuickBooksDB33 for 2023, and QuickBooksDB34 for 2024.

- Choose one host computer for each company file.
- Confirm that the matching Database Server Manager is installed.
- Ensure every workstation accessing a particular file uses the same supported year and release.
- Check Windows permissions and firewall rules for each database service.
- Do not expose one live network file to mixed years without confirming compatibility.

When side-by-side installation is not the best solution
Virtual machine
Use separate virtual machines when you need U.S. and Canadian editions, same-year products that conflict, or an isolated legacy Windows environment. A VM requires its own valid Windows license and adequate CPU, memory, and storage. Plan separate backups; a VM snapshot is not a substitute for a QuickBooks company-file backup. Intuit identifies virtualization as an option for multiple regional environments.
Hosted QuickBooks Desktop
Hosted Enterprise can centralize access, updates, and backups for remote teams, but it adds recurring cost, internet dependence, and possible peripheral or integration limitations. QuickBooks Online
QuickBooks Online is not a collection of year-based Desktop programs. Its browser interface or Windows/Mac desktop app can open multiple Online companies in separate tabs, but a Desktop company must be migrated first. Troubleshooting common failures
The new installer replaced the old year
Express installation or accepting a replace prompt is the usual cause. Preserve your files and backups, then reinstall the older product into its own folder using Custom and Network Options.
The old file no longer opens
It was likely converted by the newer year. Restore the pre-conversion backup or original file. Post-backup transactions may have to be re-entered.
Windows opens the wrong year
Use labeled year-specific shortcuts, verify the title bar before opening a file, and organize files in folders such as Company ACurrent 2025, Company ALegacy 2023, and Backups. Do not rely on the file icon alone.
Multi-user mode stopped working
Check the matching database service, hosting mode, firewall, and Windows permissions. Test one year and one file at a time; consider hosted Desktop if maintaining the network stack is impractical.

The file is from another country
Use the correct regional product in a separate VM, hosted environment, or computer. Repeatedly opening the file in another region will not make it compatible.
You cannot obtain an old installer
Intuit says discontinued products cannot be registered for the first time. Previously registered products may be re-registered under applicable conditions, but assisted support is unavailable for discontinued versions. See Download QuickBooks Desktop.
Choosing the practical path
- Choose side-by-side Desktop years for controlled legacy access, gradual migration, or accountant work across client years.
- Choose a VM for regional separation, conflicting same-year products, or legacy hardware dependencies.
- Choose hosted Desktop when several users need remote access without maintaining local servers.
- Choose QuickBooks Online when you deliberately want a cloud workflow and are prepared to migrate and review feature differences.
The Bottom Line
You can usually run two different QuickBooks Desktop years on one Windows computer. Install them in separate folders, update each installation independently, and keep separate backups. Treat company-file conversion as a one-way decision: the safest workflow is to open a copy in the newer product and retain the original until the new file has been fully tested.
